Diffusion properties exhibited variability along the length of the tracts, with hemispheric effect and age differences in specific segments of the tracts. Significant positive correlation was found between fractional anisotropy and expressive language and cognitive abilities. Our results provide a detailed examination of the effect of age and hemisphere on diffusion properties. Furthermore, the results delineate the neural correlates of white-matter microstructure to behavioral language and cognitive performance in white-matter tracts related to language and cognitive abilities at the tract level along with development.PURPOSE To propose a size-related definition of stone dust produced by lithotripsy of urinary stones. METHODS Stone dust was defined as particles small enough to adhere to the following criteria (1) spontaneous floating under 40 cm H2O irrigation pressure; (2) mean sedimentation time of > 2 s through 10 cm saline solution; (3) fully suitable for aspiration through a 3.6 F working channel. Irrigation, sedimentation, and aspiration tests were set up to evaluate each criterion. Primary outcome was particle size limit agreeing with all three criteria. Stone particles with a given size limit (≤ 2 mm, ≤ 1 mm, ≤ 500 µm, ≤ 250 µm, ≤ 125 µm and ≤ 63 µm) were obtained from laser lithotripsy, including samples from prevailing stone types calcium oxalate monohydrate, calcium oxalate dihydrate, uric acid, carbapatite, struvite, brushite, and cystine. RESULTS All particles ≤ 250 µm from all stone types were in agreement with all three criteria defining stone dust, except for struvite where size limit for a positive irrigation and sedimentation test was ≤ 125 µm. CONCLUSION A size limit of ≤ 250 µm seems to generally adhere to our definition of stone dust, which is based on floating and sedimentation proprieties of stone particles, as well as on the ability to be fully aspirated through the working channel of a flexible ureteroscope.PURPOSE The internet has resulted in huge efficiency gains in health care, the ability to deal with massive data accumulation and better manage patient data. However, potential and real pitfalls exist, including breeches in security of data and patient confidentiality, data storage issues, errors, and user interface issues. METHODS A MEDLINE review was performed using MeSH terms "health care" and "information technology." Cross-referencing was used to explore the different opportunities and challenges the internet has to offer. RESULTS As health professionals, we are fast adopting technologies at our fingertips, such as WhatsApp and video capabilities, into our clinical practice to increase productivity and improve patient care. However, the potential security breaches are significant for the health professional and health service. Further, electronic medical records have theoretical advantages to improve patient care, reduce medication errors, and expedite referrals. The downside is a less personalized approach to patient care, as well as the potential for these systems to be even more cumbersome. In regard to the acquisition of knowledge, there is no doubt the internet is our friend. Health care professionals as well as patients have unlimited resources for learning, including podcasts videos, apps, simulators, and wearable devices. Unfortunately, this comes with a risk of misinformation and poorly referenced data with little to no regulation of content. CONCLUSION In this increasing digital world, it is our task as health care providers to embrace these new technologies but develop guidelines and control systems to minimize the pitfalls. This study aims to examine the association of whole blood n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) with insulin resistance (IR) in children. Whole blood fatty acids were measured in 705 children aged 2-9 years of the European IDEFICS/I.Family cohort using gas chromatography in units of weight percentage of all detected fatty acids (%wt/wt). IR was determined by the Homeostasis Model Assessment for IR (HOMA). Mixed effect models were used to assess the associations between selected baseline PUFA and HOMA z-scores at baseline and after 2- and 6-year follow-ups using models with basic and additional confounder adjustment as well as stratified by sex and weight status. In the basic model, α-linolenic (β = 1.46 SD/%wt/wt, p = 0.006) and eicosapentaenoic acid (β = 1.17 SD/%wt/wt, p = 0.001) were positively associated with baseline HOMA z-score. In the stratified analyses, α-linolenic acid was positively associated with HOMA z-score in girls only (β = 1.98 SD/%wt/wt, p = 0.006) and arachidonic acid was inversely associated with baseline HOMA in thin/normal-weight children (β = - 0.13 SD/%wt/wt, p = 0.0063). In the fully adjusted model, no statistically significant associations were seen. Conclusions Our overall results do not indicate a protective role of higher blood n-3 PUFA or an adverse role of higher blood arachidonic acid proportion on the risk of IR.What is Known•Intervention studies reported a beneficial effect of n-3 PUFA supplementation on insulin resistance compared with placebo while observational studies in cildren are inconclusive.•Studies have shown a positive association of n-6 arachidonic acid and insulin resistance indicating an adverse role of arachidonic acid. What is New•Cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses based on circulating blood fatty acid concentrations in a large cohort of European children and adolescents.•Overall results do not support a protective role of n-3 PUFA or an adverse role of arachidonic acid in insulin resistance. The cytokinin pathway promotes the initiation of bulbil formation, and iPA may an important type of cytokinin during bulbil formation in Lilium lancifolium. PF-02341066 Bulbils are important vegetative reproductive organs in triploid Lilium lancifolium. We previously showed that cytokinins are involved in bulbil formation, but how cytokinins participate in bulbil formation is not clear. In this study, bulbil formation was divided into three stages on the basis of anatomical and histological observations the bulbil initiation stage, bulbil primordium-formation stage and bulbil structure-formation stage. The results indicated that iPA was the most critical cytokinin during the bulbil initiation. qRT-PCR revealed that increased iPA content during bulbil initiation was mainly due to increased expression of cytokinin synthesis genes (IPT1/5) and cytokinin activation genes (LOG1/3/5/7) and significantly decreased expression of the cytokinin degradation gene CKX4. Exogenous 6-BA and lovastatin affected the cytokinin pathway and promoted or inhibited bulbil initiation by increasing or decreasing the content of endogenous iPA, respectively.
