Haemophagocytosis in the bone marrow of patients who have succumbed to coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) has not been widely studied. The aims of the present study were to perform morphological analyses and morphometry of haemophagocytosis in the bone marrow of patients with severe COVID-19, and to correlate the findings with the clinical course of the disease.

In this single-centre study performed at the University Hospital Jena, bone marrow specimens of 15 deceased patients who had experienced a severe course of COVID-19 were sampled from the vertebral column during autopsy. Slides of the bone marrow were stained with routine stains or immunohistochemically, and further examined for haemophagocytosis by the use of light microscopy. To substantiate the morphological findings, additional slides were stained for CD163 and morphometry was performed. In all bone marrow samples, an increase in cellularity was found. Haemophagocytes with erythrophagocytosis were detected in 67% of the deceased patients. The objective of this study was to map the early transcriptional changes in AD skin in response to nb-UVB treatment. Adult patients (n = 16) with AD were included in the study and scored with validated scoring tools. AD skin was irradiated with local nb-UVB on day 0, 2 and 4. Skin biopsies were taken before and after treatment (day 0 and 7) and analysed for genome-wide modulation of transcription. When examining the early response after three local UVB treatments, gene expression analysis revealed 77 significantly modulated transcripts (30 down- and 47 upregulated). Among them were transcripts related to the inflammatory response, melanin synthesis, keratinization and epidermal structure. Interestingly, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-36γ was reduced after treatment, while the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-37 increased after treatment with nb-UVB. There was also a modulation of several other mediators involved in inflammation, among them defensins and S100 proteins. This is the first study of early transcriptomic changes in AD skin in response to nb-UVB. We reveal robust modulation of a small group of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory targets, including the IL-1 family members IL36γ and IL-37, which is evident before any detectable changes in skin morphology or immune cell infiltrates. These findings provide important clues to the molecular mechanisms behind the treatment response and shed light on new potential treatment targets.

To analyse the evidence pertaining to post-extraction dimensional changes in the alveolar ridge after unassisted socket healing.

The protocol of this PRISMA-compliant systematic review (SRs) was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020178857). A literature search to identify studies that fulfilled the eligibility criteria was conducted. Data of interest were extracted. Qualitative and random-effects meta-analyses were performed if at least two studies with comparable features and variables reported the same outcome of interest.

Twenty-eight articles were selected, of which 20 could be utilized for the conduction of quantitative analyses by method of assessment (i.e. see more clinical vs radiographic measurements) and location (i.e. non-molar vs molar sites). Pooled estimates revealed that mean horizontal, vertical mid-facial and mid-lingual ridge reduction assessed clinically in non-molar sites was 2.73mm (95% CI 2.36-3.11), 1.71mm (95% CI 1.30-2.12) and 1.44mm (95% CI 0.78-2.10), respectively. Mean horizontal, vertical mid-facial and mid-lingual ridge reduction assessed radiographically in non-molar sites was 2.54mm (95% CI 1.97-3.11), 1.65mm (95% CI 0.42-2.88) and 0.87mm (95% CI 0.36-1.38), respectively. Mean horizontal, vertical mid-facial and mid-lingual ridge reduction assessed radiographically in molar sites was 3.61mm (95% CI 3.24-3.98), 1.46mm (95% CI 0.73-2.20) and 1.20mm (95% CI 0.56-1.83), respectively.

The ongoing coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) is posing a threat to the public health globally. Serological test for SARS-CoV-2 antibody can improve early diagnosis of COVID-19 and serves as a valuable supplement to RNA detection.

A SARS-CoV-2 IgG/IgM combined antibody test strip based on colloidal gold immunochromatography assay was developed, with both spike protein and nucleocapsid protein of SARS-CoV-2 antigen used for antibody detection. From 3 medical institutions across China, serum or plasma of 170 patients with confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis and 300 normal controls were collected and tested with the strip. Sensitivity, specificity, kappa coefficient, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and area under the curve (AUC) were analyzed. Positive rates in different medical centers, age group, gender, and different disease course were compared.

158 out 170 samples from confirmed COVID-19 patients had positive results from the test, and 296 out of 300 samples from normal controls had negative results.
