This study in the Kochi backwaters (KBW) presents the distribution of 9 trace metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Ni, Co, Cr, Cd, Pb) in different parts (root, stolon and leaf) of the common water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes during three different seasons [Pre-Monsoon (PRM), Southwest Monsoon (SWM), and Northeast Monsoon (NEM)]. The hyacinth was collected from 4 sections upstream of the KBW where a saltwater barrage [Thannermukkom Barrage (TB)] prevents saltwater intrusion. Results showed that regardless of seasons, all the trace metals concentration in different parts of Eichhornia varied in the following order roots > stolon > leaves. All the trace metals except Fe showed their highest concentration during the PRM when TB introduces stagnancy of the water upstream through flow restrictions. Instead, Fe was high during the SWM associated with increased river influx at that time. Overall results showed that the hydrographical alterations of TB upstream of KBW have clear imprints on the trace metals concentrated in the hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes.The Dead Sea has a hypersaline environment where only extremophile species like Archaea, Bacteria, and fungi can survive. The Red Sea-Dead Sea Water Conveyance (RDSC) is constructing a pipeline of 180 km to import water from the Red Sea in the shrinking Dead Sea. Both seas exhibit highly different hydrographic features that determine their biodiversity. Using environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding and amplifying a fragment of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene (COI) from water samples, we compared the communities of the Red Sea and the Dead Sea to understand the potential impact of the water conveyance project on biodiversity, following by an identification of potential biopollutants able to enter the Dead Sea for their small size. The results suggest a high likelihood of acquiring harmful algae into the Dead Sea. This study alerts about the real risk of losing the unique Dead Sea biota when the conveyance is actually undertaken.Populations of the clam Anomalocardia flexuosa, subjected to different pollution conditions, were experimentally exposed to marine heatwaves of actual and future intensities and varying durations. We measured physiological and biochemical biomarkers and survival rates of the species under simulated heatwave events of 7 and 11 days. We observed that both the response of A. flexuosa to heatwaves and its baseline values of biomarkers were distinct between populations, demonstrating that the previous exposure to contaminants negatively interferes with the thermal tolerance of this bivalve. The duration and intensities of heatwaves here tested represent a considerable challenge for the survival of coastal bivalves. Our results suggest that the predicted increase in the ocean's average temperature and the frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves, as well as urbanization and increasing occupation of coastal regions, are factors that synergistically make A. selleck chemicals flexuosa increasingly vulnerable over the decades.Great temporal and spatial variability of inputs make comprehensive monitoring in small and middle sized rivers difficult. In this study, relevant inputs in a small river were recorded with suitable online monitoring equipment coupled in mobile water quality monitoring stations, the study area being a transborder catchment with French and German (Saarland federal state) subcatchments. In addition to a pronounced spatial variability necessitating a denser net of measuring points this catchment has also to be assessed in the light of different national regulations. To identify individual pollution sources and weigh their relative importance, relevant parameters were recorded over a representative monitoring period of several months phosphorus (P) as total phosphorus (TP) and total reactive P phosphorus (TRP), nitrate (NO3-N), ammonium (NH4-N), total organic carbon (TOC), temperature, oxygen (O2), pH, turbidity, and electrical conductivity (EC). The recorded data were subjected to adapted interpretation together with other catchment-related factors. In order to retrieve maximum information from the online data sets the relationships among certain parameter pairs were also analysed for both storm events and low flow periods. Comparison of loads at the different monitoring sites could reliably verify the majority of nutrient inputs originating in the French subcatchment. Additional sampling of output channels from sewage treatment works (STWs) in the Saarland subcatchment revealed that inputs from several decentralised STWs do not result in significant loads, as opposed to inputs from one STW in France. Our holistic approach provides a basis for adopting cost-effective measures to reduce loads in small river catchments as well as cross-border harmonisation of environmental policies.
Caring for individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) puts a substantial and often life-long burden on affected families. Caregivers' specific needs and demands are, however, not well understood so far. We thus aimed at systematically collecting data on the needs of individuals caring for children and adolescents with FASD.
Between May 2019 and November 2020, a quantitative survey among caregivers and professionals from across Germany was performed. Participants completed a questionnaire collecting information on the perceived support caregivers receive from various sources as well as the current fulfilment of caregivers' needs. Specifically, the fulfilment of a variety of specific needs summarised in five categories was rated by the participants on a scale ranging from 1 (very good) to 6 (insufficient).
Both caregivers and professionals rated the overall fulfilment of needs rather poorly (mean 3.94 and 4.27, respectively). Caregivers indicated needs concerning coordination of support (4.74) and relief services (4.44) to be fulfilled the least while needs in the relief services category also received the lowest average grade among professionals (4.57). The needs that the caregivers regarded as most sufficiently fulfilled were their own knowledge about FASD (mean 1.95) and their knowledge about the causes of their child's problems (mean 1.87).
The results of the present study indicate that FASD caregivers are supported insufficiently, while most of their needs remain unmet. Health care planners and providers thus urgently need to identify and implement measures to better address FASD caregivers' needs and demands.
