This work supports the hypothesis that grafting anti-fouling polymers to implant surfaces improves the efficacy of systemic antibiotic injections to combat periprosthetic infections.Cancer vaccines are promising adjuvant immunotherapies that can stimulate the immune system to recognize tumor-associated antigens and eliminate the residual or recurring disease. The aberrant and restricted expression of highly immunogenic cancer testis antigen NY-ESO-1 in several malignancies, including triple-negative breast cancer, melanoma, myelomas, and ovarian cancer, makes NY-ESO-1 an attractive antigenic target for cancer vaccines. This study describes a NY-ESO-1 vaccine based on a bio-inspired nanomaterial platform technology, specifically a plant virus nanoparticle. The 30 nm icosahedral plant virus cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) displaying multiple copies of human HLA-A2 restricted peptide antigen NY-ESO-1157-165 exhibited enhanced uptake and activation of antigen-presenting cells and stimulated a potent CD8+ T cell response in transgenic human HLA-A2 expressing mice. CD8+ T cells from immunized mice exhibited antigen-specific proliferation and cancer cell cytotoxicity, highlighting the potential application of a CPMV-NY-ESO-1 vaccine against NY-ESO-1+ malignancies.
Receipt of opioid prescriptions in pediatric and young adult patients may be a risk factor for future opioid misuse. Data from prescription drug monitoring programs provide insight on outpatient opioid use. In our study, we analyzed the opioid dispensing rates for pediatrics and young adults in California.
A secondary analysis was performed from 2015-2019 using Controlled Utilization Review and Evaluation System data. This database provides dispensing data of controlled substances in California. Patients younger than 25 years who were prescribed opiates were analyzed by county. We further divided them into two groups (children ≤14 years; adolescents and young adult 15-24 years). Descriptive statistics and heat maps were used to illustrate the trends in opioid usage among different age groups.
The overall percentages for the number of opioids being dispensed to patients aged <25 years have decreased over the past four years. In 2015, 6 out of 58 counties in California were considered "high-rate" with >2.9% of opioids dispensed to patients younger than 25 years old; in 2019, this number reduced to zero. Patients 25 and older received a higher proportion of opioids compared to younger populations; in 2019, 35.91% of opioids were dispensed to patients 45-64, and 8.92% to patients younger than 25.

More studies are warranted in order to understand this discrepancy in opioid prescribing among pediatric and young adult patients.Background Withdrawal dominates the contraceptive method mix in a geographical cluster of countries in South-Eastern Europe and Western Asia that have, in part, reached low fertility. This study examines the socio-demographic determinants associated with withdrawal use in Armenia, Albania, Jordan and Turkey that could explain withdrawal's persistence and inform contraceptive programs in these unique settings. Methods Cross-sectional data on 31,569 married women 15 to 49 years were drawn from the Demographic and Health Surveys in Albania (2017-2018), Armenia (2015-2016), Jordan (2017-2018), and Turkey (2013). For each country, multinomial regression models estimating withdrawal use among all women and logistic regression models estimating withdrawal use among contraceptive users were used to evaluate the association with age, marital duration, parity, education, residence, and household wealth. Results The socio-demographic determinants associated with withdrawal use varied by country among all women and among all contraceptive users. While these associations were not all significant for all four countries general trends included that women were more likely to use withdrawal than not use contraception, but less likely to use withdrawal than other methods with increasing parity, higher education, and greater household wealth. Measures of association are reported by country for each correlate. Conclusions Despite the similar contraceptive mix in these four countries, no single set of factors was found to explain withdrawal's persistence. Withdrawal's prevalence in this geographical cluster may instead result from different balances of intertwined circumstances that include couples' fertility decisions, access to modern contraception and availability of abortion services.
Behavioral disturbance (BD) is common in dementia patients, with no FDA approved medications for this condition. Little data exists on the real-world medication use in this population.
To describe real-world medications use in this population.
A cross-sectional study was conducted using the MarketScan database for outpatient medications and the Cerner database for inpatient medications. The study period was Oct 2015-Jun 2018. Patients with dementia and BD were identified through ICD-10-CM. We examined outpatient medications prescribed during 6-month before or after BD event date, and inpatient medications during inpatient visits, especially on central nervous systems (CNS) drugs including antidementia drugs, antidepressants, antipsychotics, anxiolytics, and anticonvulsants.
A total of 56,544 outpatients and 34,245 patient hospitalizations were assessed separately. Among outpatients, patients filled more medications after a BD event. The use of the five CNS drug classes generally increased after a BD event, and the largest increase was seen in antipsychotics (23%to 33%). Among inpatients, the median number of medications used in each hospitalization was 14. The use of antipsychotics was particularly high (64%), followed by anxiolytics (51%). A list of 60 unique medications were suggested to be the commonly used drugs in dementia patients with BD.

In more recent years, a growing number of studies have focused on 1) the presence of OSA in patients with MCI or AD, 2) the link between OSA and markers of AD pathology, and 3) the role of OSA in accelerating cognitive deterioration in patients with MCI or AD. Moreover, some studies have also assessed the effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment on the cognitive trajectory in MCI and AD patients with comorbid OSA. This narrative review summarizes the findings of studies that analyzed OSA as a risk factor for developing MCI and/or AD in the middle-aged and older populations with a special focus on cognition. In addition, it describes the results regarding the effects of CPAP treatment in hampering the progressive cognitive decline in AD and delaying the conversion to AD in MCI patients. Mobile Health (mHealth) apps can delay the cognitive decline of people with dementia (PwD), by providing both objective assessment and cognitive enhancement.
This patient involvement survey aims to explore human factors, needs and requirements of PwD, their caregivers, and Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) with respect to supportive and interactive mHealth apps, such as brain games, medication reminders, and geolocation trackers through a constructive questionnaire.
Following the principles of user-centered design to involve end-users in design we constructed a questionnaire, containing both open-ended and closed-ended questions as well as multiple choice and Likert scale, in order to investigate the specific requirements and preferences for mHealth apps. We recruited 48 participants including people with cognitive impairment (
= 15), caregivers (
= 16), and HCPs (
= 17) and administered the questionnaire.
All participants are likely to use mHealth apps, with the primary desired features being the improvement of memory and cognition, assistance on medication treatment, and perceived ease to use. HCPs, caregivers, and PwD consider brain games as an important technology-based, non-pharmaceutical intervention. Both caregivers and patients are willing to use a medication reminder app frequently. Finally, caregivers are worried about the patient wandering. Therefore, global positioning system tracking would be particularly important to them. On the other hand, patients are concerned about their privacy, but are still willing to use a geolocation app for cases of emergency.
This research contributes to mHealth app design and potential adoption. All three groups agree that mHealth services could facilitate care and ameliorate behavioral and cognitive disturbances of patients.
