Our results imply that cautious use of Cu NPs in agriculture is warranted due to relatively high uptake of Cu and altered nutrient quality in soybeans. The present research reports the level of nitrate (NO3-), associated health risks and possible sources of contamination in groundwater from south India. Many samples (32%) are above or approaching the recommended level of NO3- for safe drinking water. The correlation analysis indicates different sources of NO3- contamination in different regions rather than a common origin. The isotopic measurements provide information about potential nitrogen sources contributing NO3- to the groundwater. Based on isotope analysis, the sources of NO3- in the groundwater of this region are likely to be from (a) septic sewage (b) organic nitrogen (animal and livestock excreta) (c) sewage (domestic & chemical fertilizers). Among the sample analyzed sewage, manure and septic sewage contribute 46%, 23% and 31% NO3- to groundwater. The HQ > 1 indicates non-carcinogenic health risk due to consumption of high NO3- in drinking water. Among the studied age groups, infants are exposed to higher risk than children and adults. Results indicate that groundwater of this region is polluted with NO3- due to anthropogenic activities. Continuous consumption of such water may pose serious health risk to the residents.During sub-sea oil spills to the marine environment, oil droplets will rise towards the sea surface at a rate determined by their density and diameter as well as the vertical turbulence in the water. Micro-droplets ( less then 50 µm) are expected to have prolonged residence times in the water column. If present, pelagic fish eggs may thus be exposed to dispersed oil from subsurface oil spills for days, and the contribution of these micro-droplets to toxicity is not well known. The purpose of this work was to investigate to what extent timing of exposure and the presence of oil micro droplets affects PAH uptake and survival of pelagic Atlantic cod eggs. A single batch of eggs was separated in two groups and exposed to dispersions and corresponding water-soluble fraction at 3-7 days (Early exposure) and 9-13 days (Late exposure) post fertilization. Partitioning of PAHs between crude oil microdroplets, water and eggs was estimated as well as the contribution of oil droplets to PAH body residue and acute and delayed mortality. Timing of oil exposure clearly affects both the mortality rate and the timing of mortality. Even though the body residue of PAHs were lower when embryos were exposed in the later embryonic stage, mortality rate increased relative to the early exposure indicating that critical body residue threshold is stage specific. Although our results suggest that the dissolved fraction is the dominating driver for toxicity in cod embryos exposed to oil dispersions, crude oil micro droplets contribute to increased mortality as well.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative, progressive, and irreversible disease that accounts for up to 80% of all dementia cases. AD predominantly affects older adults, and its clinical diagnosis is a challenging evaluation process, with imprecision rates between 12 and 23%. Structural magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has been widely used in studies related to AD because this technique provides images with excellent anatomical details and information about structural changes induced by the disease in the brain. Current studies are focused on detecting AD in its initial stage, i.e., mild cognitive impairment (MCI), since treatments for preventing or delaying the onset of symptoms is more effective when administered at the early stages of the disease. This study proposes a new technique to perform MR image classification in AD diagnosis using discriminative hippocampal point landmarks among the cognitively normal (CN), MCI, and AD populations.

Our approach, based on a two-level classification, first ) other studies that classify AD compared to CN individuals and comparable to those classified patients with MCI.

The obtained classification results are similar to (or even higher than) other studies that classify AD compared to CN individuals and comparable to those classified patients with MCI.The present investigation examined the predictive utility of nonjudgmental acceptance, a facet of mindfulness defined as the ability to remain aware and nonevaluative about internal experience, in terms of substance-related cue reactivity among adults with substance use disorders (SUD) and posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptomatology. We hypothesized that higher nonjudgmental acceptance, indexed via self-report, would predict higher levels of self-reported control over oneself and safety 'in the moment', broadly, and lower levels of substance-related craving in response to substance script cues. Effects were expected after subtracting reactivity to neutral script cues from each outcome rating. PTS severity was included as a covariate. The sample was comprised of 53 adults (48.1% women; 75.9% African American; 74.1% with past-month PTSD) with substance dependence per DSM-IV and at least four symptoms of PTSD per DSM-5. Higher baseline nonjudgmental acceptance predicted greater safety and control in response to substance cues; no effects were found for craving. These experimental laboratory results elucidate the potential clinical utility of mindfulness-based interventions in bolstering recovery from addiction among adults with SUD/PTS by fostering safety and control in response to substance cues.It is well-known that the Coronavirus Disease 2019, which is caused by the beta-coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-2), emerged in December 2019 followed by an outbreak first reported in Wuhan, China. Thus far, vaccination appears to be the only way to bring the pandemic to an end. In the present study, immunogenicity data was evaluated using LIAISON® SARS-CoV-2 TrimericS IgG assay (DiaSorin S.p.A) among a sample of 52 vaccinated healthcare workers, five of whom were previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 and 47 who were seronegative, over a time span of ≤90 days following the second dose of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine. The test detects antibodies against the Trimeric complex (S1, S2 and receptor binding domain). The overall mean value of the serum levels of IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 30 days following the second dose of the vaccine was 1,901.8 binding arbitrary unit (BAU)/ml, after 60 days the mean value declined to 1,244.9 BAU/ml. The antibody levels then reached a plateau, as confirmed by the antibody test carried out 90 days following the second dose, which revealed a mean value of 1,032.4 BAU/ml (P less then 0.0001). A higher level was observed at all three times in male subjects compared with female subjects, and in younger male participants compared with female participants, although these differences did not reach a statistically significant level. Similarly, no significant difference was found in antibody values at different times according to age. After the second dose of the vaccine, two subjects were infected with SARS-CoV-2, and an increase in antibody values in the third assay was observed in both individuals.

Neurological viral infection is frequently associated to enterovirus, herpesvirus and arboviruses. These infections may cause severe clinical outcomes, long lasting sequelae or death. Few studies have addressed viral neurological infections etiology in Brazil.

Identification of viruses in the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) of human neurological infections suspected of viral etiology during January and May 2019 in Midwestern Brazil.

Clinical, laboratory and epidemiological information was gathered from medical records. In addition, an aliquot of the sampled CSF was subjected to viral RNA/DNA extraction, randomic dscDNA amplification by PCR, DNA purification and Ilumina HiSeq 2500 sequencing.

Six viral genomes belonging to Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) East-Central-South African (ECSA) genotype (10.834-11.804nt in length) confirmed lately by RT-PCR for CHIKV envelope were present in all six liquor samples. These genomes present two mutations, nsP2T31I and nsP3A388V, shared with other Mato Grosso State strains in the state of Mato Grosso, Midwestern Brazil. The activity concentrations of 40K, 210Pb, 210Po, 226Ra, 228Ra, 228Th, 230Th, 232Th, 234U, and 238U were determined in 82 food samples, grouped into 20 food groups according to the Brazilian Total Diet, which reflects the dietary habits of a population, for the rural and urban areas of Poços de Caldas city, a High Background Radiation Area. The highest activity concentration found in the food samples was due to 40K being present in all types of food. Among the other radionuclides, high activity concentrations were found for 210Pb in beans and salt, 210Po in fish, 226Ra and 228Ra in nuts and seeds. The main food groups that contributed most to the effective dose, in urban and rural regions, were beans and beverages. The effective doses, due to the ingestion of the analysed food groups, were of 0.44 and 0.60 mSv y-1 and the lifetime cancer risks were 1.6 × 10-3 and 2.3 × 10-3 for the urban and rural Poços de Caldas population, respectively. We present plutonium (Pu) and uranium (U) isotopic fingerprints (or signatures) in environmental samples collected at Bikar Atoll. Bikar is the second -most northern atoll of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and therefore an important reference point to evaluate the extension of the regional fallout from the Pacific Proving Grounds (PPG) in Bikini and Enewetak Atolls. Previous studies have shown that regional fallout from atmospheric nuclear weapon testing (NWT) in Bikini and Enewetak has resulted in elevated levels of fallout radionuclides in this atoll. In order to optimally interpret the isotopic fingerprints, we compare our results with data obtained in eleven certified reference materials, representing different contamination sources. As well as 238Pu, 239Pu, 240Pu, 241Pu, 238U and 235U, this study also encompasses less commonly reported radionuclides such as 242Pu, 244Pu and 236U. We show the importance of combining numerous fingerprints for improved assessment of the source of a nuclear contamination. In samples from Bikar, Pu and U isotope ratios were found to vary within narrow ranges. Pu and U fingerprints suggest that regional fallout from the Castle Bravo test in March 1954 was the main source of the contamination. This was further confirmed by two different age dating approaches that estimated 1954 as the year of the contamination. We demonstrate that use of an exponential function to approximate the yield of heavy radionuclides in thermonuclear explosions with increasing mass is a valid approach for estimating the age of a contamination. We show that, if sufficient radionuclide activity concentration measurement results with low uncertainties are available, this method is robust.

The number of patients using palliative care services, particularly residential hospices, is increasing. Selleckchem MM3122 Policymakers are urging these services to reflect on the most effective organizational strategies for meeting patients' complex care needs.

To analyze the predictive power of staffing, structure and process indicators towards optimal control of patients' clinically significant symptoms over time.

Secondary analysis of data from a multicentre prospective longitudinal observational study (PRELUdiHO) collected between November 2017 and September 2018.

Adult patients (n=992) enrolled in 13 Italian residential hospices.

Two generalized estimating equations logistic models were built, both with number of hospice beds and length of stay as independent variables as well as, in one case, patient-to-healthcare worker ratios, and, in the other, health professionals' qualification levels. Dependent variables were six not clinically significant (score<4) symptoms pain, nausea, shortness of breath, feeling sad, feeling nervous, and 'how you feel overall', according to the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System revised (ESAS-r) scale.
