Increase in allergenicity towards cow's milk, lactose intolerance, the prevalence of hypercholesterolemia, and flexitarian choice of food consumption have increased the market for cow's milk alternatives. Non-dairy plant-based beverages are useful alternatives because of the presence of bioactive components with health-promoting properties, which attract health-conscious consumers. However, the reduced nutritional value and sensory acceptability of the plant-based beverages (such as flavor, taste, and solubility) compared to cow's milk pose a big threat to its place in the market. Thermal treatments are commonly used to ensure the quality of plant-based beverages during storage. However, the application of high temperatures can promote the degradation of thermolabile compounds and some detrimental reactions, thus reducing protein digestibility and amino acid availability of non-dairy plant-based beverages substitutes. New and advanced food processing technologies, such as high-pressure processing, high-pressure homogenization, pulsed electric fields, and ultrasound, are being researched for addressing the issues related to shelf life increase, emulsion stability, preservation of nutritional content and sensorial acceptability of the final product. However, the literature available on the application of non-thermal processing technologies on the physicochemical and nutritional properties of plant-based beverages is scarce. Concerted research efforts are required in the coming years in the functional plant-based beverages sector to prepare newer, tailor-made products which are palatable as well as nutritionally adequate.Physical activity has long been associated with chronic diseases. However, the association between physical activity and renal progression in hypertensive patients remains unclear. This study investigated the relationship between the level of physical activity and renal function in hypertensive patients. We analyzed 3543 patients with hypertension. Data on patients' demographic characteristics, comorbidities, physical activity, and lifestyle characteristics were collected via questionnaires. An estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) that was reduced by more than 25% from the baseline eGFR was defined as renal progression. This study divided physical activity into three levels (low, moderate, and high) based on their metabolic equivalent of tasks (METs) levels. The mean age was 63.32 ± 12.29 years. After we adjusted for covariates, renal progression was significantly higher among patients with low levels of physical activity (odds ratio (OR), 1.39; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.01-1.90)) and moderate levels of physical activity (OR, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.04-1.86) than among patients with high levels of physical activity. We found a significant association between physical activity and renal progression in hypertensive patients, especially in elderly patients and men. Therefore, to reduce the risk of renal progression, we recommend that clinicians should encourage patients to improve their physical activity.European Polistine wasps inhabit mainly temperate and warm climate regions. However, the paper wasp Polistes biglumis represents an exception; it resides in mountainous areas, e.g., in the Alps and in the Apennines. In these habitats, the wasps are exposed to a broad temperature range during their lifetime. We investigated whether they developed adaptations in their metabolism to their special climate conditions by measuring their CO2 production. The standard or resting metabolic rate and the metabolism of active wasps was measured in the temperature range which they are exposed to in their habitat in summer. The standard metabolic rate increased in a typical exponential progression with ambient temperature, like in other wasps. The active metabolism also increased with temperature, but not in a simple exponential course. Some exceptionally high values were presumed to originate from endothermy. The simultaneous measurement of body temperature and metabolic rate revealed a strong correlation between these two parameters. The comparison of the standard metabolic rate of Polistes biglumis with that of Polistes dominula revealed a significantly lower metabolism of the alpine wasps. This energy saving metabolic strategy could be an adaptation to the harsh climate conditions, which restricts foraging flights and energy recruitment. The compaction control of random fills has developed very little due to the limitations of particle sizes, with methods usually using a simple procedural control. In order to develop new quality control procedures for random slate filling, the necessary field work and laboratory tests were carried out. New test procedures for wheel-tracking or settlement tests have been successfully investigated. read more A total of 4500 in situ measurements of density and 580 topographic settlements, 960 wheel-tracking trolley tests and more than 130 slab rolling tests have been determined. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) has been carried out, obtaining correlations between tests in order to replace the deductibles. The variables that were used to analyze variance were the average lot density, the average settlement between last and first roller pass, the average wheel impression after test carriage, the first vertical modulus of the plate bearing test (PLT), the second vertical modulus of the PLT and the relation between second and first modulus of the PLT. The research proposes a new procedure for the quality control of the compaction of the randomized slate filling used in the crown area.Premature ovarian failure (POF) is defined as loss of ovarian function in women less than 40 years of age. The causes of POF are diverse and include environmental factors. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is one factor that may cause POF. The ubiquitin-proteasome system maintains intracellular balance by promoting or inhibiting protein degradation. To investigate the differential expressions of deubiquitinating enzyme (DUB) genes in patients with POF, we developed two in vitro POF models by treating A2780 or OVCAR5 with DEHP. Using these models, a multiplex RT-PCR system for DUB genes was applied to identify biomarkers by comparing expression patterns and DUB mRNA levels; multiplex RT-PCR results were validated by qRT-PCR and Western blotting analyses. Observed differential expression levels of several DUB genes including USP12, COPS5, ATXN3L, USP49, and USP34 in A2780 and OVCAR5 cells at the mRNA and protein levels suggest that they should be investigated as potential biomarkers of POF.The subject of the presented research was a thin-walled composite column made of CFRP (carbon-epoxy laminate). The test sample had a top-hat cross-section with a symmetrical arrangement of laminate layers [90/-45/45/0]s. The composite structure was subjected to the process of axial compression. Experimental and numerical tests for the loss of stability and load-carrying capacity of the composite construction were carried out. The numerical buckling analysis was carried out based on the minimum potential energy criterion (based on the solution of an eigenvalue problem). The study of loss of load-carrying capacity was performed on the basis of a progressive failure analysis, solving the problem of non-linear stability based on Newton-Raphson's incremental iterative method. Numerical results of critical and post-critical state were confronted with experimental research in order to estimate the vulnerable areas of the structure, showing areas prone to damage of the material.Tree barks are mainly considered as wood wastes from forestry activities, but represent valuable resources as they may contain antimicrobial compounds. Here, we aimed to evaluate the possible antimicrobial activities of bark extracts and to characterize the chemical composition of the most active extract. Ten methanol bark extracts were tested in vitro against 17 bacterial strains and 5 yeast strains, through minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal (or fungicidal) concentration (MBC/MFC) assays. The extract from Prunus avium (E2-4) displayed the largest bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria, with a lethal effect on 6 out of 8 strains. Antibiofilm assays of E2-4 were performed by crystal violet staining and enumeration of adhered bacteria. Assays demonstrated a biofilm inhibitory effect of E2-4 against Staphylococcus aureus CIP 53.154 at concentrations equal to or higher than 250 µg/mL. Chemical profiling of E2-4 by 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) revealed the presence of dihydrowogonin as a major constituent of the extract. E2-4 was fractionated by centrifugal partition chromatography and the three fractions containing dihydrowogonin were tested for their antibacterial and antibiofilm activities, revealing similar activities to those of E2-4. Dihydrowogonin was positively assessed as an interesting antimicrobial compound, which could be valued from wastes of Prunus avium barks. This study aimed to compare the collective dynamics of three different age-level groups (i.e., U13, U15 and U18) during a 4 vs. 4 plus goalkeepers small-sided game (SSG). Fifty-four male outfield soccer players aged between 13 and 18 years took part in the study. Team tactical behaviors were assessed by measuring (a) the area occupied by players of each team, (b) the distance between both teams' centroids, (c) the players' distance to their own team and d) the stretch index during a 4 vs. 4 plus goalkeepers SSG format. The main results revealed that larger areas were occupied by the older players (P less then 0.001; Effect size (ES) = 0.44-0.25, small). Additionally, the mean distance between teams' centroids was greater in older groups (P less then 0.001; ES = 0.44-0.81, large-small). Finally, the distance between players (P less then 0.001; ES = 0.75-0.81, moderate-large) and the stretch index (P less then 0.001; ES = 0.44-0.47, small) were also greater in older age categories. The evidence provided in the present study might help coaches identify the influence of age on collective dynamics during SSGs and help them find task conditions that could help to improve the behaviors and positioning of younger players.Classroom-based physical activity (PA) interventions have received considerable attention due to improvements seen in academic achievement, classroom behaviors, and attitude toward PA. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Brain Breaks® Physical Activity Solutions in changing children's attitudes toward PA. Students (N = 3036) aged 8-11 years from schools in Croatia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, South Africa, and Turkey were randomly assigned to either a control or an experimental group. The experimental group received Brain Breaks® videos during classroom sessions throughout the four months of intervention. Student attitudes toward PA were measured using the Attitudes toward Physical Activity Scale (APAS) before and after the intervention. Repeated measures ANOVA indicated a time interaction effect for all APAS variables except fitness. Time-by-group interaction effects with different effect sizes were found for most APAS variables, with the greatest gain effect noted in the experimental group for self-efficacy, followed by learning from the videos concerning PA benefits, exercise importance, and enjoyment from engaging in PA.
