This study aimed to evaluate the positive rate and prognostic significance of superb microvascular imaging (SMI) in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients in remission with normal C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and erythrocyte sedimentation rates (ESR).

The study enrolled 112 RA patients, and ultrasound (US) assessment was performed on 28 joints of each patient.

The SMI signal-positive rates for each joint were metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints 20.5%, wrist joints 43.8%, metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints 17.0%, and other foot joints 25.0%. Investigation of the prognostic significance of the SMI signal in each joint revealed that only in the MTP joints was the total score of the SMI signal in the patients with relapse significantly higher than that in the patients with remission (P = 0.01). Comparison of the receiver operating characteristics curves for predicting relapse showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of the MTP joints was the highest (AUC = 0.66) of the investigated joints. The optimal threshold for the total MTP SMI score was 1 (accuracy = 83.3%). Positive/negative data of the SMI signal in the MTP joints were not significantly associated with the values of conventional disease activity markers.

Thermochemical parameters correlated to the leading antioxidant mechanisms such as hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), single electron transfer-proton transfer (SETPT), and sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET) were studied in gas and water media. In addition, the changes of thermochemical parameters such as free energy change (∆G) and enthalpy change (∆H) were computed for hydrogen abstraction (HA) from TQ to hydroxyl radical in gas and water phases to investigate its free radical scavenging potency. The low and comparable values of bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE), proton dissociation enthalpy (PDE), ionization potential (IP), proton affinity (PA), and electron transfer enthalpy (ETE) revealed the antioxidant activity. Effective end-organ peripheral vascular resistance responses are critical to blood pressure control while upright, and prevention of syncope (fainting). The Valsalva maneuver (VM) induces blood pressure decreases that evoke baroreflex-mediated vasoconstriction. We characterized beat-to-beat forearm vascular resistance (FVR) responses to the VM in healthy adults, evaluated the impact of age and sex on these responses, and investigated their association with orthostatic tolerance (OT; susceptibility to syncope). We hypothesized that individuals with smaller FVR responses would be more susceptible to syncope.

Healthy young (N = 36; 19 women; age 25.4 ± 4.6years) and older (N = 21; 12 women; age 62.4 ± 9.6years) adults performed a supine 40mmHg, 20s VM. Graded 60° head-up-tilt with combined lower body negative pressure continued to presyncope was used to determine OT. Non-invasive beat-to-beat blood pressure and heart rate (finger plethysmography) were recorded continuously.
