Contrarily, the heavy pollutions in Shanghai usually occurred on the days with deep afternoon PBL and southwesterly warm advections within the PBL. Although the warm advections were more favorable to the PBL development than the movements of cool marine air mass, the input of pollutants from the southwest can overweigh this advantage, resulting in poor air quality in Shanghai. The occurrence of heavy pollution or clean condition in Shanghai was primarily determined by the synoptic forcing rather than the local PBL structure. This comparative study indicates that the relationship between PBL height and pollution level is changeable and complicated, which needs to be elucidated from the synoptic perspective. The mechanism driving the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in drinking water supply systems (DWSSs) with multiple barriers remains poorly understood despite several recent efforts. Phosphorothioate (PT) modifications, governed by dndABCDE genes, occur naturally in various bacteria and involve the incorporation of sulfur into the DNA backbone. PT is regarded as a mild antioxidant in vivo and is known to provide protection against bacterial genomes. We combined quantitative polymerase chain reaction, metagenomic, and network analyses for the water treatment process and laboratory-scale experiments for chlorine treatment using model strains to determine if DNA PT modification occurred in DWSS and facilitated the dissemination of mobilized colistin resistance-1 (mcr-1) and New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (blaNDM-1) in DWSS. Our results indicated that the relative abundance of dndB increased in the effluent, compared with the influent, in the water treatment plants. Presence of dndB copies had aant bacteria.Studies have reported significant reductions in air pollutant levels due to the COVID-19 outbreak worldwide global lockdowns. Nevertheless, all of the reports are limited compared to data from the same period over the past few years, providing mainly an overview of past events, with no future predictions. Lockdown level can be directly related to the number of new COVID-19 cases, air pollution, and economic restriction. As lockdown status varies considerably across the globe, there is a window for mega-cities to determine the optimum lockdown flexibility. To that end, firstly, we employed four different Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to examine the compatibility to the original levels of CO, O3, NO2, NO, PM2.5, and PM10, for São Paulo City, the current Pandemic epicenter in South America. After checking compatibility, we simulated four hypothetical scenarios 10%, 30%, 70%, and 90% lockdown to predict air pollution levels. To our knowledge, ANN have not been applied to air pollution prediction by lockdown level. Using a limited database, the Multilayer Perceptron neural network has proven to be robust (with Mean Absolute Percentage Error ∼ 30%), with acceptable predictive power to estimate air pollution changes. We illustrate that air pollutant levels can effectively be controlled and predicted when flexible lockdown measures are implemented. The models will be a useful tool for governments to manage the delicate balance among lockdown, number of COVID-19 cases, and air pollution.Organotin compounds are highly toxic environmental pollutants with neurotoxic and endocrine-disrupting effects. They are potent inhibitors of glutathione transferases (GSTs), thus impeding their detoxication and antioxidant functions. Several GSTs, including equine GST A3-3 (EcaGST A3-3), exhibit steroid double-bond isomerase activity and are involved in the biosynthesis of testosterone and progesterone. Tat-beclin 1 supplier We have performed enzyme kinetics analyses of the inhibition of EcaGST A3-3 by organotin compounds. We have also solved crystal structures of EcaGST A3-3 in complexes with glutathione, and with glutathione together with covalently bound triethyltin. Our structural data indicate that the tin atom forms strong bonds with a covalent character not only with the glutathione, but also with a tyrosyl residue of the enzyme itself, thereby preventing the release of the glutathione-organotin adduct and completely blocking the enzyme function. This work presents a structural basis for the general mechanism of GST inhibition by organotin compounds and contributes to the understanding of their neurotoxic and endocrine disrupting effects.Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has a significant influence on soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation in forest ecosystems. Microbial residues, as by-products of microbial anabolism, account for a significant fraction of soil C pools. However, how N deposition affects the accumulation of soil microbial residues in different forest biomes remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of six/seven-year N additions on microbial residues (amino sugar biomarkers) in eight forests from tropical to boreal zone in eastern China. Our results showed a minor change in the soil microbial residue concentrations but a significant change in the contribution of microbial residue-C to SOC after N addition. The contribution of fungal residue-C to SOC decreased under low N addition (50 kg N ha-1 yr-1) in the tropical secondary forest (-19%), but increased under high N addition (100 kg N ha-1 yr-1) in the temperate Korean pine mixed forest (+21%). The contribution of bacterial residue-C to SOC increased under the high N addition in the subtropical Castanopsis carlesii forest (+26%) and under the low N addition in the temperate birch forest (+38%), respectively. The responses of microbial residue-C in SOC to N addition depended on the changes in soil total N concentration and fungi to bacteria ratio under N addition and climate. Taken together, these findings provide the experimental evidence that N addition diversely regulates the formation and composition of microbial-derived C in SOC in forest ecosystems.Acid sulfate soils are a major problem in modified coastal floodplains and are thought to have substantial impacts on estuarine species. In New South Wales, Australia, acid sulfate soils occur in every estuary and are thought to impact important fisheries species, such as Eastern School Prawn (Metapenaeus macleayi). These fisheries have experienced declining productivity over the last ten years and increasing occurrence of catchment-derived stressors in estuaries contribute to this problem. We evaluated the effect of pH 4-7.5 on School Prawn survival at two salinities (27 and 14.5), pH 5, 6 and 7.5 on the predation escape response (PER) speed at two salinities (27 and 14.5), and pH 4 and 7.5 on respiration rates. While mortality appeared to be greater in the high salinity treatment, there was no significant relationship between proportional survival and pH for either salinity treatment. Respiration was significantly slower under acidic conditions and the average PER was almost twice as fast at pH 7.5 compared to pH 5 (p less then 0.
