Parasites can be used as biological tags to assess stock structures in various marine fish species. In the present study, the species composition and infection levels of parasitic nematodes of the genus Anisakis in the skipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis were examined in the Northwest Pacific and adjacent seas. A total of 867 third-stage larvae of Anisakis were collected from 112 skipjack tunas captured around Japan and in other subtropical localities. All larvae were identified as A. berlandi, A. pegreffii, A. simplex (s.s.), A. typica, and A. physeteris (s.l.) by the direct sequencing of the mitochondrial cox2 gene and real-time PCR assays targeting the nuclear ITS region. Anisakis species composition differed among northeastern Japan, the Sea of Japan, and other areas (central Japan, the Nansei Islands, and subtropical region), which is largely concordant with previous stock discrimination of skipjack tuna. Molecular phylogenetic analysis resulted in two intraspecific genetic groups in A. MSU-42011 price simplex (s.s.), one of which occurred almost exclusively in northeastern Japan. This could be a useful indicator for stock discrimination. Skipjack tunas from northeastern Japan were also characterized by a remarkable variety in the intensity of A. simplex (s.s.), suggesting the commingling of individuals with different migration patterns. This idea might be further justified by the geographic distribution of two genetically distinct groups of A. physeteris (s.l.).Psoriatic onycho-pachydermo periostitis (POPP) is characterized by psoriatic onychodystrophy, connective tissue thickening, and periostitis of the distal phalanges (DPs), producing a drumstick-like deformity. Our aim was to present the first case of POPP treated successfully with an IL-17 inhibitor, perform a literature review of its characteristics and treatment, and explore the possible pathogenesis. We conducted a systematic review of previously presented POPP cases. We present a patient with methotrexate (MTX)-resistant treatment POPP, who had significant resolution of symptoms and inflammatory lesions on post-treatment MRI with secukinumab 150 mg. We also identified 31 cases of POPP (27 males; mean age 44.9 years) in the literature review. There was great toe involvement in 24 cases, and distal interphalangeal (DIP) involvement in 14 cases, with frequent radiographically evident damage. Seventeen of 31 patients received systematic treatment other than biologics, mostly MTX, with no satisfactory results. Anti-TNF agents were used successfully in 5 cases, mostly after disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) failure. Imaging studies in nail psoriasis and DIP psoriatic arthritis have shown an anatomical link among the nail, the DP bone, and the DIP joint entheses, suggesting that POPP may be a subtype of nail disease with excessive involvement of DP tissues (nail, soft tissue, enthesis, and bone). IL-17 inhibition could be an alternative therapeutic option in DMARD-resistant cases of POPP. Conventional treatment achieves modest success, but anti-TNF agents appear to be much more effective. Based on imaging studies, POPP may be a particular subtype of nail disease.

Many hospitals postponed elective surgical care during the first wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Some centers continued elective surgery, including esophageal cancer surgery, with the use of preoperative screening methods; however, there is no evidence supporting the safety of this strategy as postoperative outcomes after esophageal cancer surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic have not yet been investigated.

This multicenter study in four European tertiary esophageal cancer referral centers included consecutive adult patients undergoing elective esophageal cancer surgery from a prospectively maintained database in a COVID-19 pandemic cohort (1 March 2020-31 May 2020) and a control cohort (1 October 2019-29 February 2020). The primary outcome was the rate of respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation.

The COVID-19 cohort consisted of 139 patients, versus 168 patients in the control cohort. There was no difference in the rate of respiratory failure requiring mechanical v Esophageal cancer surgery can be performed safely with the use of adequate preoperative SARS-CoV-2 screening methods.

The staging of breast cancer has been based on tumor size, lymph node involvement, and presence or absence of distant metastases. The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system in its eighth edition incorporates hormone receptors, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and histologic grade due to their prognostic importance. In Latin America, however, the impact of the new edition is unknown. This article evaluates the performance of the AJCC eighth-edition staging system in a cohort of patients with breast cancer at a reference center in Colombia.

The study investigated a descriptive cohort of 912 patients who received complete treatment for non-metastatic invasive breast cancer and had information on the anatomic stage and biologic factors,. All the patients were restaged using the AJCC eighth-edition classification. Changes in clinical stages and differences between the two classifications were compared.

The study enrolled 912 patients. Changes in staging occurred for 54.82% (downstaging for 40.3% and upstaging for 14.47%) of these patients. For recurrence-free survival, the C-Index of the eighth-edition AJCC was 0.726, and the AIC was 1323.7, whereas the C-Index of the seventh-edition AJCC was 0.731, and the AIC was 1314.3 (p = 0.99).

The seventh and eighth editions of the AJCC staging system have similar predictive values in our population for recurrence-free survival. Future studies are necessary to evaluate the performance of the AJCC eighth-edition staging system in predicting overall survival.
