Preeclampsia (PE) is a multisystem disorder of pregnancy characterized by sudden onset of hypertension and proteinuria. The appearance and diagnosis of the disease remain elusive and the only treatment is the termination of pregnancy. The onset of the disease is preceded by a shift in the balance of the angiogenic and antiangiogenic proteins in the maternal circulation. We surmised that the assessment of the levels of these proteins during pregnancy could lead to a proper diagnosis of the disease. In this study, we determined the levels of angiogenic and antiangiogenic proteins and IL-6 in maternal circulation during normotensive and hypertensive pregnancy, including PE. Serum isolated from pregnant women during antenatal visits was used to determine the concentrations of these proteins. The levels of antiangiogenic proteins, sFlt-1 and sEng, were higher in hypertensive disorders [gestational hypertension (GH), mild PE, and PE] of pregnancy and were significantly higher for PE than for GH. The levels of sFlt-1 and sEng were higher in PE samples compared to those in GH and NT samples. These proteins may have contributed to increased blood pressure. The levels of PlGF were decreased in pregnant women having GH, mild PE, and PE. The levels of the inflammatory intermediate, IL-6, were increased in PE samples compared to those in the GH and normotensive samples. The evaluation of the altered levels of antiangiogenic and angiogenic proteins can be useful for diagnosis of PE.

The major sites of distant metastases of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) are the lung and bone; metastasis to the liver is rare. Although the postoperative serum thyroglobulin (Tg) level after total thyroidectomy is a good prognostic indicator for PTC when anti-thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) is negative, the presence of TgAb interferes with the Tg assay, making serum Tg levels unreliable. Here we report a case of liver metastasis of PTC that presented with elevated serum levels of carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9), which is usually a serum marker of pancreatic and gastrointestinal neoplasias.

A 69-year-old man was diagnosed with PTC and underwent total thyroidectomy 16years ago. The patient's serum Tg levels increased progressively during follow-up and his serum TgAb was negative. Positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) revealed metastases of the lung, cervical spine, mediastinum and liver. The liver lesion was a solitary tumor measuring 4.0cm in the greatest dimension. His serumsis of a PTC presenting with elevated serum levels of CA19-9 after total thyroidectomy. This case suggests that the serum CA19-9 levels may serve as a surrogate marker for PTC in place of the serum Tg level in patients with positive serum TgAb if the PTC and/or the metastatic lesions are positive for CA19-9 staining.

Cell division cyclin 25 homolog C (Cdc25C) is a tumor-associated antigen candidate gene, and this may be used as an effective target in cancer treatment. The present study aims to evaluate the lysis effect of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) induced by dendritic cell line DC2.4 overexpressing Cdc25C, and the feasibility of Cdc25C as a component in hepatoma immunotherapy.

The mouse Cdc25C gene was ligated into a lentiviral vector, and transfected into DC2.4 cells. The DC2.4 cell phenotype and cytokine secretion were determined by flow cytometry and ELISA, respectively. CD8

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is advantageous for evaluating microcirculation, and has been applied to assess arthritis in previous studies. However, CEUS examinations have not been studied for hemophilia arthritis. Hemophilia arthritis is different from other arthritis, because it is induced by spontaneous joint bleeding. Hence, CEUS may have special value in evaluating hemophilia arthritis. The present study assessed the value of CEUS in evaluating synovial hypertrophy and predicting recurrent joint bleeding in severe hemophilia A patients.

From August 2016 to January 2017, 81 severe hemophilia A patients, who were referred to our hospital for ultrasound joint assessment with conventional ultrasound, were enrolled. Among these 81 patients, 46 patients consented for CEUS examinations on the same day.

Compared to color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI), four more joints presented with a blood flow signal under CEUS mode. In addition, the synovial hypertrophy measured by CEUS was thicker than that measurating the possibility of recurrent joint bleeding, and providing more reliable evidence for individualized treatment.

To explore the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms of action of thymol in Aspergillus fumigatus (A. fumigatus) keratitis.

The minimum inhibitory concentration of thymol against A. fumigatus was detected. To characterize the anti-inflammatory effects of thymol, mouse corneas and human corneal epithelial cells were pretreated with thymol or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) before infection with A. fumigatus spores. Slit-lamp microscopy, immunohistochemistry, myeloperoxidase detection, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, and Western blotting were used to assess infection. Neutrophil and macrophage recruitment, in addition to the secretion of LOX-1 and IL-1β, were quantified to evaluate the relative contribution of thymol to the inflammatory response.

We confirmed that the growth of A. fumigatus was directly inhibited by thymol. In contrast with the DMSO group, there was a lower degree of inflammation in the mouse corneas of the thymol-pretreated group. This was characterized by significantly lower clinical scores, less inflammatory cell infiltration, and lower expression of LOX-1 and IL-1β. Similarly, in vitro experiments indicated that the production of LOX-1 and IL-1β was significantly inhibited after thymol treatment, in contrast with the DMSO-pretreated group.

Our findings demonstrate that thymol exerted a direct fungistatic activity on A. fumigatus. Furthermore, thymol played a protective role in fungal keratitis by inhibiting LOX-1/IL-1β signaling pathway and reducing the recruitment of neutrophils and macrophages.

In this current opinion piece, we first describe the challenges caused by hospital closures and discuss what policymakers should know based on the existing research. In this study, we thus assessed whether this species was able to locate hidden food using acoustic cues alone (training phase). During the subsequent test phase, we investigated the capacity of successful individuals to choose the correct baited container in four conditions (i) baited (shaking the baited container), (ii) full information (shaking both containers), (iii) exclusion (shaking the empty container), and (iv) control (shaking neither container). Four out of ten subjects succeeded in locating the baited container in the training phase. During the test phase, most subjects chose the baited container significantly more than the empty container in the baited and full information condition, while their performance was at chance level in the control condition. When no sound emanated from the empty container in the exclusion condition, one out of four skuas chose the baited container with more accuracy than predicted by chance. As this bird chose correctly on the first trial and during the first five trials, its performance is unlikely due to learning processes (learning to exclude the empty container).
