Polypharmacy with "potentially inappropriate medications" (PIMs) and "potential prescribing omissions" (PPOs) are frequent among those 65 and older. We assessed PIMs and PPOs in a retrospective study of 82,935 patients ≥ 65 during their first admission in the period March 2013 through February 2018 to the four acute-care Calgary hospitals. We used the American Geriatric Society (AGS) and STOPP/START criteria to assess PIMs and PPOs. We computed odds ratios (ORs) for key outcomes of concern to patients, their families, and physicians, namely readmission and/or mortality within six months of discharge, and controlled for age, sex, numbers of medications, PIMs, and PPOs. For readmission, the adjusted OR for number of medications was 1.09 (1.09-1.09), for AGS PIMs 1.14 (1.13-1.14), for STOPP PIMs 1.15 (1.14-1.15), for START PPOs 1.04 (1.02-1.06), and for START PPOs correctly prescribed 1.16 (1.14-1.17). For mortality within 6 months of discharge, the adjusted OR for the number of medications was 1.02 (1.01-1.02), for STOPP PIMs 1.07 (1.06-1.08), for AGS PIMs 1.11 (1.10-1.12), for START PPOs 1.31 (1.27-1.34), and for START PPOs correctly prescribed 0.97 (0.94-0.99). Algorithm rule mining identified an 8.772 higher likelihood of mortality with the combination of STOPP medications of duplicate drugs from the same class, neuroleptics, and strong opioids compared to a random relationship, and a 2.358 higher likelihood of readmission for this same set of medications. Detailed discussions between patients, physicians, and pharmacists are needed to improve these outcomes.Doubled haploid technology is widely applied in maize. The haploid inducer lines play critical roles in doubled haploid breeding. We report the development of specialized haploid inducer lines that enhance the purple pigmentation of crossing immature embryos. During the development of haploid inducer lines, two breeding populations derived from the CAU3/S23 and CAU5/S23 were used. Molecular marker-assisted selection for both qhir1 and qhir8 was used from BC1F1 to BC1F4. Evaluation of the candidate individuals in each generation was carried out by pollinating to the tester of ZD958. Individuals with fast and clear pigmentation of the crossing immature embryos, high number of haploids per ear, and high haploid induction rate were considered as candidates. Finally, three new haploid inducer lines (CS1, CS2, and CS3) were developed. The first two (CS1 and CS2) were from the CAU3/S23, with a haploid induction rate of 8.29%-13.25% and 11.54%-15.54%, respectively. Meanwhile, the CS3 was from the CAU5/S23. Its haploid induction rate was 8.14%-12.28%. In comparison with the donor haploid inducer lines, the 24-h purple embryo rates of the newly developed haploid inducer lines were improved by 10%-20%, with a ~90% accuracy for the identification of haploid immature embryos. These new haploid inducer lines will further improve the efficiency of doubled haploid breeding of maize.Food risk and the safety of foodstuffs in the aftermath of contamination are highly sensitive issues to communicate. Food risks receive extensive attention from the news media, which requires messages to be carefully drafted to minimize harm and avoid unnecessary boycotts. Once a food risk is deemed eliminated, communication efforts must rebuild trust among consumers. The latter is a particularly difficult task after radiological contamination. This study tests whether numerical messages, narrative messages, or messages combining both elements are more effective in persuading the public to consume foodstuffs from Fukushima, a region that continues to battle stigma since the nuclear accident in 2011. We employ a survey-embedded experiment on a sample of the general Belgian population (N = 1085), during which respondents are presented with a mock news article presenting either a (1) numerical, (2) narrative, or (3) a combined message and test their subsequent evaluation of the article. We find that the numerical message leads to significantly higher perceived credibility and message acceptance than both the combined and the narrative message. Furthermore, we find that attitudes towards nuclear energy have a strong independent effect on message acceptance and evaluation, with those respondents who report a more positive stance towards nuclear energy more readily accepting the message. Food risk and safety communication may thus benefit from adopting a more detached, numerical approach for sensitive issues.Endocrine therapy is the mainstay of adjuvant treatment for patients with luminal breast cancer. Despite ongoing advances in endocrine therapy to date, a proportion of patients ultimately develop endocrine resistance, resulting in failure of therapy and poor prognosis. Therefore, as part of the growing concept of personalised medicine, the need for identification of predictive markers of endocrine therapy response at an early stage, is recognised. The METABRIC series was used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in term of response to adjuvant endocrine therapy. Drebrin 1 (DBN1) was identified as a key DEG associated with response to hormone treatment. Next, large, well-characterised cohorts of primary luminal breast cancer with long-term follow-up were assessed at the mRNA and protein levels for the value of DBN1 as a prognostic marker in luminal breast cancer, as well as its potential for predicting the benefit of endocrine therapy. DBN1 positivity was associated with aggressive clinicopathological variables and poor patient outcomes. Importantly, high DBN1 expression predicted relapse patients who were subject to adjuvant endocrine treatment. Our results further demonstrate that DBN1 is an independent prognostic marker in luminal breast cancer. The highest polyphenols content was found in the Phlegraean mandarin, especially in peel and seeds, whereas Kumquat exhibited the highest polyphenols amount in the pulp. The antioxidant activity was higher in the peel of Phlegraean mandarin and clementine compared to Kumquat, which showed the highest value in the pulp. The antioxidant activity peaked in the seeds of Phlegraean mandarin. The vitamin C in the Phlegraean mandarin was the highest in all parts of the fruit, especially in the seeds. Total chlorophyll content was comparable in the peel of different cultivars, in the pulp the highest amount was found in clementine, whereas kumquat seeds showed the greatest values.
