Potassium (K) is essential for plant growth and stress responses. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in adaptation to nutrient deprivation through modulating gene expression. Here, we identified the miRNAs responsive to K deficiency in Triticum aestivum based on high-throughput small RNA sequencing analyses. Eighty-nine miRNAs, including 68 previously reported ones and 21 novel ones, displayed differential expression under K deficiency. In Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia and Genome analyses, the putative target genes of the differentially expressed miRNAs were categorized into functional groups associated with ADP-binding activity, secondary metabolic pathways, and biosynthesis and metabolism. Functional characterization of tae-miR408, an miRNA significantly down-regulated under K deficiency, revealed its important role in mediating low-K tolerance. Compared with wild type, transgenic tobacco lines overexpressing tae-miR408 showed significantly improved K uptake, biomass, photosynthesis, and reactive oxygen species scavenging under K deficiency. Selleck D-Lin-MC3-DMA These results show that distinct miRNAs function in the plant response to K deficiency through regulating target genes involved in energy metabolism and various secondary metabolic pathways. Our findings shed light on the plant response to K deficiency mediated by miRNAs in T. aestivum. Distinct miRNAs, such as tae-miR408, are valuable targets for generating crop varieties with improved K-use efficiency. An amendment to this paper has been published and can be accessed via a link at the top of the paper. The Directive 2010/63 EU requires classifying burden and severity in all procedures using laboratory animals. This study evaluated the severity of liver fibrosis induction by intraperitoneal carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) injections in mice. 29 male C57BL/6N mice were treated three times per week for 4 weeks with an intraperitoneal injection (50 µl) of either 0.6 ml/kg body weight CCl4-vehicle solution, germ oil (vehicle-control) or handling only. Severity assessment was performed using serum analysis, behavioral tests (open field test, rotarod, burrowing and nesting behavior), fecal corticosterone metabolite (FCM) measurement, and survival. The most significant group differences were noticed in the second week of treatment when the highest AST (1463 ± 1404 vs. 123.8 ± 93 U/L, p  less then  0.0001) and nesting values were measured. In addition, respective animals showed lower moving distances (4622 ± 1577 vs. 6157 ± 2060 cm, p  less then  0.01) and velocity in the Open field, identified as main factors in principal component analysis (PCA). Overall, a 50% survival rate was observed within the treatment group, in which the open field performance was a good tracer parameter for survival. In summary, this study demonstrates the feasibility of assessing severity in mice using behavioral tests and highlight the open field test as a possible threshold parameter for risk assessment of mortality.Understanding of how particles and light interact in a liquid environment is vital for optical and biological applications. MoS2 has been shown to enhance nonlinear optical phenomena due to the presence of a direct excitonic resonance. Its use in biological applications is predicated on knowledge of how MoS2 interacts with ultrafast ( less then  1 ps) pulses. In this experiment, the interaction between two femtosecond pulses and MoS2 nanoparticles suspended in liquid is studied. We found that the laser pulses induce bubble formation on the surface of a nanoparticle and a nanoparticle aggregate then forms on the surface of the trapped bubble. The processes of formation of the bubble and the nanoparticle aggregation are intertwined. This work reports the synthesis and application of highly tuned cadmium-free green and red InPZnSe1-xSx/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) in QD enhanced liquid crystal displays (LCD). The emissions of the quantum dots were synthetically tuned to sharp emissions at low full-width at half maximum. The QDs were incorporated in LCD devices as quantum dot enhancement film (QDEF) or as a quantum dot incorporated color filter (QDCF). Synthetic tuning of the gradient inter-shell in the QDs leads to reduced full width at half-maximum, resulting in sharp green and red emissions from both types of devices. The application of the same QDs to devices using these different integration techniques shows the superiority of QDCF devices over QDEF ones. The RGB color gamut of a QDCF-LCD was 81.4% of REC.2020 in the CIE 1931 color space compared to 71.2% obtained for a QDEF-LCD display. The improved performance of QDCF was mainly due to the optimal interactions between the green QDs and the green color filter. The superior performance of cadmium-free InPZnSe1-xSx/ZnS QDCFs in LCDs make them well-suited for ultra-high-definition TV formats.Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs), 50-150 nm in diameter, have been proposed to mediate cell-cell communication with important implications in tumor microenvironment interactions, tumor growth, and metastasis. We previously showed that mutant KRAS colorectal cancer (CRC) cells release sEVs containing Rab13 protein and mRNA. Previous work had shown that disruption of intracellular Rab13 trafficking inhibits epithelial cell proliferation and invasiveness. Here, we show that Rab13 additionally regulates the secretion of sEVs corresponding to both traditional exosomes and a novel subset of vesicles containing both β1-integrin and Rab13. We find that exposure of recipient cells to sEVs from KRAS mutant donor cells increases proliferation and tumorigenesis and that knockdown of Rab13 blocks these effects. Thus, Rab13 serves as both a cargo protein and as a regulator of sEV secretion. Our data support a model whereby Rab13 can mediate its effects on cell proliferation and invasiveness via autocrine and paracrine signaling.Notoscopelus resplendens is an abundant myctophid in the region of the Central-Eastern Atlantic. As with a majority of other myctophid species, this species performs vertical migration, playing a key role in the oceanic food web and in carbon sequestration. We examined the reproductive biology of N. resplendens based on 579 specimens caught between 1997 and 2002 off the Canary Islands. We found that the maximum standard length (SL) was lower than the size reported by other authors. The sex ratio was not different from 11. The average size at first maturity (L50) was higher in females (60.34 mm SL) than in males (56.61 mm SL). The gonadosomatic index (GSI) at 50% sexual maturity in females was higher than that in males. The reproductive activity was observed from January to April, while from May onwards, the majority of fish caught were in the process of maturation. The macroscopic scale of maturation was validated through the histological analysis of the ovarian development. The batch fecundity was related to the standard length, with an average of 1068.
