Modifying surfaces using free radical polymerization (FRP) offers a means to incorporate the diverse physicochemical properties of vinyl polymers onto new materials. Here, we harness the universal surface attachment of polydopamine (PDA) to "prime" a range of different surfaces for free radical polymer attachment, including glass, cotton, paper, sponge, and stainless steel. We show that the intrinsic free radical species present in PDA can serve as an anchor point for subsequent attachment of propagating vinyl polymer macroradicals through radical-radical coupling. Leveraging a straightforward, twofold soak-wash protocol, FRP over the PDA-functionalized surfaces results in covalent polymer attachment on both porous and nonporous substrates, imparting new properties to the functionalized materials, including enhanced hydrophobicity, fluorescence, or temperature responsiveness. SR10221 datasheet Our strategy is then extended to covalently incorporate PDA nanoparticles into organo-/hydrogels via radical cross-linking, yielding tunable PDA-polymer composite networks. The propensity of PDA free radicals to quench FRP is studied using in situ 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, revealing a surface area-dependent macroradical scavenging mechanism that underpins PDA-polymer conjugation. By combining the arbitrary surface attachment of PDA with the broad physicochemical properties of vinyl polymers, our strategy provides a straightforward route for imparting unlimited new functionality to practically any surface.Increasing concentration of atmospheric CO2 is a worldwide concern and continues to trigger various environmental problems. Photo- or electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (CO2-Red) using solar energy, i.e., artificial photosynthesis, is a prospective technique owing to its sustainability and the usefulness of the reaction products. Concentrations of CO2 in exhaust gases from industries are several % to 20%, and that in the atmosphere is about 400 ppm. Although condensation processes of CO2 require high energy consumption and cost, pure CO2 has been used in most of the reported studies for photo- and electrocatalytic CO2-Red because the reaction between CO2 and the catalyst could be one of the rate-limiting steps. To address these issues and provide a repository of potential techniques for other researchers, this perspective summarizes the catalytic systems reported for the reduction of low-concentration CO2, which utilize a combination of catalytic CO2-Red and CO2-capturing reactions (or CO2 adsorption). First, we describe CO2 insertions into M-X bonds of the catalysts, which increase the rate constants and/or equilibrium constants for CO2 binding on the catalysts, and modifications of the second coordination sphere to stabilize the CO2-bound catalysts. Furthermore, we discuss the reaction media used for catalytic CO2-Red that have the unique effect of increasing CO2 concentrations around the catalysts. These reaction media include typical CO2-capturing additives, ionic liquids, and metal-organic frameworks.A protocol for the catalytic nucleophilic activation of unactivated styrenes is reported, which enables the generation of a non-stabilized alkenyl anion equivalent as a transient intermediate. In the reaction, N-heterocyclic carbenes add across styrenes to generate ylide intermediates, which can then be used in intramolecular nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions of aryl fluorides, chlorides, and methyl ethers. The method allows for straightforward access to complex polyaromatic compounds. The Golgi apparatus (GA) is the hub of intracellular trafficking, but selectively targeting GA remains a challenge. We show an unconventional types of peptide thioesters, consisting of an aminoethyl thioester and acting as substrates of thioesterases, for instantly targeting the GA of cells. The peptide thioesters, above or below their critical micelle concentrations, enter cells mainly via caveolin-mediated endocytosis or macropinocytosis, respectively. After being hydrolyzed by GA-associated thioesterases, the resulting thiopeptides form dimers and accumulate in the GA. After saturating the GA, the thiopeptides are enriched in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Their buildup in ER and GA disrupts protein trafficking, thus leading to cell death via multiple pathways. The peptide thioesters target the GA of a wide variety of cells, including human, murine, and Drosophila cells. Changing d-diphenylalanine to l-diphenylalanine in the peptide maintains the GA-targeting ability. In addition, targeting GA redirects protein (e.g., NRAS) distribution. This work illustrates a thioesterase-responsive and redox-active molecular platform for targeting the GA and controlling cell fates.Trehalose is an important rare sugar that protects biomolecules against environmental stress. We herein introduce a dual enzyme cascade strategy that regulates the proportion of cargos and scaffolds, to maximize the benefits of enzyme immobilization. Based upon the self-assembling properties of the shell protein (EutM) from the ethanolamine utilization (Eut) bacterial microcompartment, we implemented the catalytic synthesis of trehalose from soluble starch with the coimmobilization of α-amylase and trehalose synthase. This strategy improved enzymatic cascade activity and operational stability. The cascade system enabled the efficient production of trehalose with a yield of ∼3.44 g/(L U), 1.5 times that of the free system. Moreover, its activity was maintained over 12 h, while the free system was almost completely inactivated after 4 h, demonstrating significantly enhanced thermostability. In conclusion, an attractive self-assembly coimmobilization platform was developed, which provides an effective biological process for the enzymatic synthesis of trehalose in vitro.Selective removal of carbonyl sulfide (COS) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is the key step for natural gas desulfurization due to the highly toxic and corrosive features of these gaseous sulfides, and efficient and stable desulfurizers are urgently needed in the industry. Herein, we report a class of nitrogen-functionalized, hierarchically lamellar carbon frameworks (N-HLCF-xs), which are obtained from the structural transformation of Zn zeolitic imidazolate frameworks via controllable carbonization. The N-HLCF-xs possess the desirable characteristics of large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas (645-923 m2/g), combined primary three-dimensional microporosity and secondary two-dimensional lamellar microstructure, and high density of nitrogen base sites with enhanced pyridine ratio (17.52 wt %, 59.91%). The anchored nitrogen base sites in N-HLCF-xs show improved accessibility, which boosts their interaction with acidic COS and H2S. As expected, N-HLCF-xs can be employed as multifunctional and efficient desulfurizers for selective removal of COS and H2S from natural gas. COS was first transformed into H2S via catalytic hydrolysis, and the produced H2S was then captured and separated and catalyzed oxidation into elemental sulfur. The above continuous processes can be achieved with solo N-HLCF-xs, giving extremely high efficiencies and reusability. Their integrated desulfurization performance was better than many desulfurizers used in the area, such as activated carbon, β zeolite, MIL-101(Fe), K2CO3/γ-Al2O3, and FeOx/TiO2.The cell entry of SARS-CoV-2 has emerged as an attractive drug development target. We previously reported that the entry of SARS-CoV-2 depends on the cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG) and the cortex actin, which can be targeted by therapeutic agents identified by conventional drug repurposing screens. However, this drug identification strategy requires laborious library screening, which is time consuming, and often limited number of compounds can be screened. As an alternative approach, we developed and trained a graph convolutional network (GCN)-based classification model using information extracted from experimentally identified HSPG and actin inhibitors. This method allowed us to virtually screen 170,000 compounds, resulting in ∼2000 potential hits. A hit confirmation assay with the uptake of a fluorescently labeled HSPG cargo further shortlisted 256 active compounds. Among them, 16 compounds had modest to strong inhibitory activities against the entry of SARS-CoV-2 pseudotyped particles into Vero E6 cells. These results establish a GCN-based virtual screen workflow for rapid identification of new small molecule inhibitors against validated drug targets. The combination of pyridonate ligands with transition metal ions enables the synthesis of an especially rich set of diverse coordination compounds involving various κ- and μ-bonding modes and higher nuclearities. With iron(II) ions, this chemical space is rather poorly explored beyond some biomimetic models of the pyridone iron-containing hydrogenase. Here, the topologically new Fe5 and Fe4 clusters, Fe5(LH)6[N(SiMe3)2]4 (1) and Fe4(LMe)6[N(SiMe3)2]2 (2), were synthesized (LH = 2-pyridonate; LMe = 6-methyl-2-pyridonate). Complex 1 contained an unprecedented diamondoid Fe@Fe4 tetrahedron with a central-to-peripheral Fe-Fe distance of ∼3.1 Å. The crystal structure of complex 2 displayed an Fe4O6 butterfly motif containing a planar Fe4 arrangement. Mössbauer spectroscopy confirmed the high-spin ferrous character of all iron ions. SQUID magnetometry reveals that the Fe(II) ions are involved in weak magnetic exchange coupling across the pyridonate bridges that results in antiferromagnetic interactions. The Fe4 cluster exhibits slow relaxation of magnetization under an applied magnetic field with an effective energy barrier of 38.5 K, rarely observed among the very rare examples of Fe(II) cluster-based single-molecule magnets. Studies of protolytic substitution of the amido ligands demonstrated the lability of the diamondoid Fe5 core in 1 and the stability of the Fe4 rhomboid in 2.Electrochemical glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) is an attractive alternative anodic reaction to oxygen evolution reaction for a variety of electrolytic synthesis, thanks to the possibility of mass production of glycerol from biomass and the relative low thermodynamic potential of GOR. The development of high-activity cheap electrocatalysts toward GOR yet faces a daunting challenge. Herein, we experimentally prepare a new range of high entropy alloy (HEA) self-supported electrodes with uniform HEA nanoparticles grown on carbon cloth. The systematic electrochemical studies verify that the HEA-CoNiCuMnMo electrode exhibits attractive performance for GOR electrocatalysis with low overpotential and high selectivity toward formate products. The surface atomic configurations of HEA-CoNiCuMnMo are studied by a self-developed machine learning-based Monte Carlo simulation, which points out the catalytic active center to be Mo sites coordinated by Mn, Mo, and Ni. We further develop a hybrid alkali/acid flow electrolytic cell by pairing alkaline GOR with acidic hydrogen evolution reaction using the HEA-CoNiCuMnMo and the commercial RhIr/Ti as the anode and the cathode, respectively, which only requires an applied voltage of 0.55 V to reach an electrolytic current density of 10 mA cm-2 and maintains long-term electrolysis stability over 12 days continuous running at 50 mA cm-2 with Faraday efficiencies of over 99% for H2 in the cathode and 92% for formate production in the anode.
