The functional role of lung microbiota has attracted an accumulating attention recently, but the profile and functional role of the lung microbiota in patients with lung cancer remained largely unknown.

To evaluate the association of the microbiota with lung cancer, we performed comparative analysis of the lung microbiota using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing approach in the paired bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples (paired samples from cancerous lung and the contralateral non-cancerous lung) from 50 cancer patients with unilateral lobar masses.

This study aimed to investigate antibiotic resistance patterns and resistance-related, genes in clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii. This report aims to describe the use of a superficial circumflex iliac artery perforator (SCIP)-osteocutaneous flap for reconstructing a complex tissue defect of the great toe. A 62-year-old man presented with a crush injury to the forefoot. Because the great toe was severely crushed, the defect distal to the proximal phalanx of the great toe was reconstructed using a SCIP-osteocutaneous flap. The immediate postoperative course was uneventful; however, surgical revision was necessary. Signs of osseous union could be observed on radiographic images taken 2 months after the initial surgery. Twenty-four months after surgery, the patient could freely walk without resorption of the transferred bone. The discrepancy between the focal nature of the arteriovenous shunt and the extent of the induced myelopathy is a classic feature of SDAVFs related to the coexistence of diffuse spinal venous drainage impairment.

We describe 3 cases of cervical SDAVFs (at C1, C4, and C7) presenting with a myelopathy that spared the cervical spinal cord and, in 2 instances, the upper thoracic cord. This is to our knowledge the first observations of cervical SDAVFs with MRI showing absent or subtle flow voids and presenting remote thoracolumbar myelopathy without cervical cord involvement.

In this study, we measured four α-species diversity indices (the Patrick richness index, Shannon-Wiener diversity index, Simpson diversity index, and Pielou evenness index) in aquatic plant communities invaded by Eichhornia crassipes in southern China. We also recorded eight environmental parameters of these communities (longitude, latitude, elevation, dissolved oxygen, water conductivity, nitrate nitrogen, temperature, and precipitation), together with nine biotic traits of E. crassipes [abundance, invasion cover, height, total carbon (C) content of the leaves and stems, total nitrogen (N) content of the leaves and stems, and the CN ratio of leaves and stems]. We then used regression analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA) to determine the dominant factors related to plant diversity. We found that the environment significantly affected E. link3 crassipes abundance, height, coverage, stem carbon, and tissue nitrogen, while the leaf CN stoichiometric ratio was relatively stable. Increasing longitude significantly increased plant diversity, while elevated dissolved oxygen and precipitation slightly improved plant diversity, but increased elevation caused negative effects. E. crassipes invasion significantly decreased all four diversity indices. Increases in E. crassipes coverage and leaf CN strongly decreased plant diversity, and increased abundance slightly decreased diversity. Our study indicates that both the changing water environment and the properties of the aquatic invasive plants could have significant impacts on plant diversity. However, a considerable proportion of the archaeal pre-tRNAs genetically encode a CCA motif, while the enzymatic characteristics of the archaeal RNase (aRNase) Zs in processing CCA-containing pre-tRNAs remain unclear. This study intensively characterized two methanomicrobial aRNase Zs, the Methanolobus psychrophilus mpy-RNase Z and the Methanococcus maripaludis mmp-RNase Z, particularly focusing on the properties of processing the CCA-containing pre-tRNAs, and in parallel comparison with a bacterial bsu-RNase Z from Bacillus subtilis. Kinetic analysis found that Co2+ supplementation enhanced the cleavage efficiency of mpy-RNase Z, mmp-RNase Z, and bsu-RNase Z for 1400-, 2990-, and 34-fold, respectively, and Co2+ is even more indispensable to the aRNase Zs than to bsu-RNase Z.
