Multiple observational studies have demonstrated an association with cannabis use and acute myocardial infarction, especially among young adults. However, little is known about the connection with subclinical or electrocardiographic myocardial injury. We hypothesized that cannabis use would be associated with an increased risk of myocardial injury as defined by the cardiac infarction and/or injury score (CIIS). This analysis included 3,634 (age 48.0 ± 5.9 years, 47.1% male, 68.7% Caucasians) participants from the Third National Health and Examination Survey. Cannabis use was defined by self-report. Those with history of cardiovascular disease were excluded. Myocardial injury was defined as electrocardiographic CIIS ≥ 10. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the association between cannabis use and myocardial injury. The consistency of this association was tested among subgroups stratified by race, gender, tobacco smoking status, and comorbidities. About 26.0% (n = 900) of participants were ever-cannabis users and 15.5% (n = 538) had myocardial injury. In a model adjusted for potential confounders, ever-cannabis users had 43% increased odds of myocardial injury compared to never users (Odds ratio (95% confidence interval) 1.43 (1.14, 1.80); p = 0.002). This association was stronger among participants with a history of hypertension versus those without (Odds ratio (95% confidence interval) 1.83 (1.36, 2.47) vs 1.17 (0.83, 1.64), respectively; interaction p value 0.04). Cannabis use is associated with an increased risk of myocardial injury among those without cardiovascular disease with effect modification by co-existent hypertension. These novel findings underscore the harmful effects of cannabis use on cardiovascular health and also merit a personalized risk assessment when counseling patients with hypertension on its use.We report the first case of using an anterior scalene plane block at the superior trunk level achieving phrenic nerve blockade to treat intolerable referred shoulder pain after liver Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) of a diaphragm-abutting liver tumor despite prevention with a full-dose non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. The anterior scalene plane block rapidly alleviated pain without significant complications.Gear systems (or gearboxes) are widely used in rotating machinery. Reliable gear fault diagnostic techniques and systems are critically needed to provide early warning of a possible defect so as to prevent machinery operation degradation and to reduce costs related to predictive maintenance. In this work, a new evolving neuro-fuzzy (eNF) classifier is proposed for real-time gear system fault diagnostics. In evolving process, the constraints related to gear health states are used to guide the partition of the output space, to prevent possible misleading clusters. A new training algorithm based on the normalized Adadelta function is suggested to improve eNF training convergence and accuracy. The effectiveness of the proposed eNF classifier is tested by simulation and experiment tests. The selection of the filter band for demodulation is crucial to extract the weak repetitive transients of fault rolling element bearing (REB). However, when the signal to noise is low, traditional methods for finding a suitable filter band are susceptible to the cyclostationary (CS) interference and the abnormal shock. In order to solve this problem, a new extraction method with reweighted singular value decomposition and improved Fast_kurtogram, namely RWSVD_IFK, is proposed. Firstly, by combining the new weight factors with singular components, a novel denoised strategy is presented to preprocess the original signal for reducing the CS interference. Secondly, considering that the kurtosis index is sensitive to the abnormal shock, the proposed method introduces the autocorrelation function into Fast_kurtogram to weaken the interference of the abnormal shock. And then, the squared envelope is applied to extract the weak repetitive transients from the optimal filtered signal. The simulated data and measured data of the fault REB are used to verify the validity of the proposed RWSVD_IFK. The results show that the proposed method can overcome the CS interference and the abnormal shock in finding the optimal filter band and effectively extract the weak repetitive transients of fault REB.We are losing biodiversity quickly, not simply because of development but due to poor spatial planning. Recent findings propose thoughtful configurations and management of human-modified landscapes to protect biodiversity while allowing food production. This opens up a range of feasible actions in the conservation agenda, which overlap with food sovereignty initiatives.Ecologists and conservationists increasingly acknowledge that traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) is vital for a better understanding and conservation of biodiversity; for example, for a more complex socioecological understanding of long-term processes, ecosystem resilience, the impacts of traditional management practices, and the worldviews underpinning these practices. To gain a deeper understanding of the ecological dimensions of TEK, ecologists and conservation biologists should conduct participatory long-term collaborative research on TEK. To conduct TEK research properly, however, ecologists need to familiarize themselves more deeply with the methodologies of social sciences, further develop their links with social scientists, and adopt new approaches, such as strengthening respect towards other knowledge systems and being inclusive in research and open to new types of validation.

Pathogenesis of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) which concerns improper embryonal ureteric bud development still remains controversial, despite current studies have revealed several candidate genes. In this study, we aimed to determine the protein expression of certain genes which might play role in the pathogenesis of VUR, in the resected ureterovesical junction segments.

The study group consisted of 19 children; 12(63%) girls, 7(37%) boys who had ureteroneocystostomy (UNC) operation; 3(15.7%) right sided, 7(36.8%) left sided, 9(47.3%) bilateral due to VUR. read more As a total, 28 ureterovesical junction segments were available for analysis of protein expressions of GDNF/RET, PAX2 and FGFR2 genes by their Western Blot analysis.

Protein based expressions of FGFR2, PAX2 and RET were significantly lower than β-Actin (p=0.001, for all proteins). Correlation analyses between grade of reflux and protein expressions revealed no significant relations (p>0.05, for all proteins). When we grouped the patients into 2 groups as high grade (grade 4-5) and low grade reflux (grade 1-3) for convenient analyses, no statistically significant difference was found between groups (p>0.
