The other 7 eyes had corneal trauma combined with irregular tissue defects, which were full-thickness corneal defects in 5 eyes and lamellar defects in 2 eyes, all less than 3.0 mm in length. Thus, five eyes received PK, and 2 eyes received LK using an irregular wedge-shaped patch. The visual acuity increased greatly postoperatively, with mild corneal astigmatism. None of the patients developed immune rejection.

Individualized corneal patching with a minimal graft can save corneal materials, relieve corneal scars, gain a good visual prognosis, and avoid immune rejection in the treatment of corneal trauma combined with tissue defects.

Here, we present a simple method (MRBLEs 2.0) for the efficient high-throughput generation of microspheres with ratiometric barcode lanthanide encoding (MRBLEs) that bear functional groups for downstream surface bioconjugation. Bead production in MRBLEs 2.0 relies on the manual mixing of lanthanide/polymer mixtures (each of which comprises a unique spectral code) followed by droplet generation using single-layer, parallel flow-focusing devices and the off-chip batch polymerization of droplets into beads. To streamline downstream analyte coupling, MRBLEs 2.0 crosslinks copolymers bearing functional groups on the bead surface during bead generation. Using the MRBLEs 2.0 pipeline, we generate monodisperse MRBLEs containing 48 distinct well-resolved spectral codes with high throughput (>150,000/min and can be boosted to 450,000/min). We further demonstrate the efficient conjugation of oligonucleotides and entire proteins to carboxyl MRBLEs and of biotin to amino MRBLEs. Finally, we show that MRBLEs can also be magnetized via the simultaneous incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles with only a minor decrease in the potential code space. With the advantages of dramatically simplified device fabrication, elimination of the need for custom-made equipment, and the ability to produce spectrally and magnetically encoded beads with direct surface functionalization with high throughput, MRBLEs 2.0 can be directly applied by many labs towards a wide variety of downstream assays, from basic biology to diagnostics and other translational research.Pyogenic liver abscess typically occurs secondary to biliary or haematogenous spread of organisms. In the context of acute appendicitis, abscesses generally occur due to haematogenous spread through the mesenteric vasculature. Historically, few cases of direct intra-abdominal spread have been reported but this has become vanishingly rare since the development of antibiotic therapy with no recorded cases in a search of over 900 cases in the literature.Kimura's disease is an uncommon inflammatory disorder of unclear aetiology, mainly affecting young Asian descent males among their second and fourth decades of life. The disease typically emerges as a long-standing and painless subcutaneous mass lesion in the head and neck region, frequently associated with swelling of major salivary glands, particularly the parotid gland, and regional lymphadenopathy. Peripheral eosinophilia and high serum immunoglobulin E are also characteristic findings. We report a case and describe the imaging and pathological features of the disease in a 19-year-old Caucasian male, with review of the literature.Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) refers to a rare group of genetic disorders that makeup part of the connective tissue disorders consortium. It is characterized by clinical features such as skin hyperextensibility, joint hypermobility, and tissue fragility. A vascular subtype (EDS IV) exists, that predisposes affected patients to vascular injury and is well-known and documented. However, other manifestations of EDS IV are less commonly understood and reported. Though spontaneous pneumothorax has been described in several cases, formation of traumatic air cysts/pneumatoceles with little to no inciting factors has not. This can eventually lead to pulmonary hemorrhage or hemopneumothorax. We present a case of spontaneous formation of a traumatic air cyst with ensuing large-volume hemopneumothorax occurring in a time period of under 3 minutes, between pre- and post-contrast-media administration during CT angiography of the chest. We are reporting a case of a 47-year-old male with primary synovial sarcoma of the right parotid gland with tumor thrombus extension in the right internal jugular vein and right atrium. The rarity of this occurrence as documented in the review of the literature provides for uncertainty about proper management. Our case represents a rare occurrence with the unique radiological finding that has implications for management.Waardenburg syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder of neural crest cell migration. It is characterized by congenital sensorineural hearing loss, heterochromia iridis, depigmentation of hair and skin, and increased intercanthal distance. It is subdivided into four subtypes with I and II being most common. These subtypes are categorized based on genetic mutations. Although medical literature has well documented this syndrome, dental and radiographical findings have been rarely presented. In this case report and literature review, we have presented and discussed oral as well as head and neck radiology findings of a 20-year-old girl with Waardenburg syndrome.Pseudoaneurysms of the lingual artery are an extremely rare entity and often are consequence of neck surgery, trauma or inflammation (e.g., due to chemoradiotherapy or odontogenic infection), and may cause life-threatening bleeding. To our knowledge, this is the first report of buccal bleeding secondary to the presence of a previously undiagnosed oropharyngeal carcinoma with an associated lingual artery pseudoaneurysm.Conventional neuroimaging techniques for investigating the cause of stroke are mainly centred on investigating luminal stenosis. The pathophysiology of intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD) and stroke is complex and extends beyond just vessel narrowing. The concept of the vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque, that can result in acute coronary syndromes, has been well described in the cardiac literature1,2although this concept is less well accepted among stroke physicians. We describe a case of a 61-year-old male with acute neurological sequelae from a non-stenotic atherosclerotic plaque of the intracranial vertebral artery. This case report describes the additional use of vessel wall MRI techniques to aid the radiologist in identifying such vulnerable lesions and therefore helping to tailor management and prevent further clinical deterioration.Gallstone ileus is a rare cause of small bowel obstruction. Chronic gallstone irritation can lead to the formation of a cholecystoduodenal fistula, with gallstone impaction typically in the terminal ileum. Rarely gallstones can become impacted in other structures such as the colon or can even erode through the bowel. We present an unusual case of a gallstone ileus which resulted in the formation of an enterovaginal fistula, secondary to previous pelvic radiotherapy. Our case highlights the importance of considering fistula formation as a late complication of radiotherapy and how this can alter expected features of other pathologies, such as a gallstone ileus.Primary extradural spinal melanoma is a very rare lesion. Here, we report a thoracic extradural malignant melanoma in a 77-year-old male. MRI showed a dorsal spinal extradural tumour at the T6-T8 level. The tumour showed hyperintensity on T1W imaging and mixed hypointensity and hyperintensity on T2W imaging. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI showed high enhancement on the lesion. Information on imaging findings for extradural spinal melanoma appears very limited. We discuss the MRI findings from this case, which can be considered typical of extradural spinal melanoma and review the literature.Proximal small bowel obstruction in the region of the duodenum is an uncommon clinical entity. Our case, which involves obstruction of the third portion of the duodenum due to an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), is even more unusual. A review of the relevant literature regarding duodenal obstruction due to extrinsic compression includes features that differentiate aortoduodenal syndrome from superior mesenteric artery syndrome. Management of these conditions range from conservative to surgical, of which now includes a more recent role of metallic stents in some instances. An epidermal/(epi)dermoid cyst of the thyroid is a rare cause of an intrathyroidal mass. At radiological evaluation, it may initially be misinterpreted as a thyroid adenoma or carcinoma. We present a case report of a 15-year-old boy, who was evaluated because of a neck mass which caused globus pharyngeus and pain at swallowing. Ultrasound examination revealed a hypoechoic nodule-like structure in the left thyroid lobe. Aspiration of the nodule yielded white fluid. Cytological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of an epidermal inclusion cyst of the thyroid. This report describes a rare case of retroperitoneal hernia and its preoperative diagnosis. Contrast-enhanced CT and multiplanar reconstruction were used to observe the hernia ring, hernia tract, contents and blood flow of a retroperitoneal hernia. The diagnosis of and conditions related to the retroperitoneal hernia were confirmed by CT soon after hospitalisation. There are no reports on the diagnosis of primary retroperitoneal hernia on CT in the literature to date, and we share this case to facilitate the accurate and timely identification of small intestine retroperitoneal hernias in the future.Intramyocardial dissecting hematoma (IMDH) is an uncommon fatal complication after acute myocardial infarction. It is usually under identified. Transthoracic echocardiography is the first-line modality that can detect IMDH. Cardiac magnetic resonance could confirm the diagnosis. In this paper, we reported a unique partially thrombosed large left ventricle IMDH that mimics thrombosed true aneurysm aiming to highlight the supporting diagnostic transthoracic echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance criteria of IMDH.Among Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, the vascular type is the most severe because of its vascular complications. Transcatheter embolization of medium-sized arteries has become the first-line therapy for life-threatening hemorrhage. Ongoing multiple lesions causing hemorrhagic or ischemic complications in the acute phase can challenge patient management. Multivessel endovascular treatment has never been reported. In this study, we report successful single-session treatment by coiling of a ruptured pseudoaneurysm of the hepatic artery with stenting of dissected right renal and iliac arteries in a 46-year-old female. Percutaneous transfemoral approach was gained and sealed with a plug-based closure device. Genetic disease was subsequently confirmed by molecular analysis.
