Promoting healthy lifestyles in children, has become a priority for public health institutions. However, electronic devices with screens encourage sedentary behaviors. The aim of this study was to analyze the evolution of the habits of physical activity practice and television watching in a cohort of 20 years of research in Spanish children.

A cross-sectional, observational study was based on data from the Spain National Health Surveys between 1997 and 2017 (

= 11,444). The dependent variables considered were the frequency with which the minor practiced physical activity (PA) in his/her spare time, the daily TV viewing habit, and the daily hours of TV viewing.

The children who practiced physical activity daily has decreased 7.3% throughout the study period. The proportion of children who watched the television daily for more hours increased significantly (6.3%). Such increase was constant throughout the years, and the analysis by sex showed that the proportion of boys who watched television for more than three hours per day increased three percent, and that of girls increased fourfold.

The habits of physical activity practice and television viewing have changed towards sedentary lifestyle. Particularly, the girls and the children between 12 and 14 years showed the most sedentary behavior. Public health policies must consider the differences between sexes in order for such interventions to be effective in the population of pre-adolescents, in general, and girls, in particular.

The impact of part-time work in this population is a controversial topic, perhaps because of the sociocultural background-related inconsistencies in previous results. In this cross-sectional study, which involved a secondary analysis of data from the 11th-13th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Surveys, conducted among 800 middle and high schools by the Korean government, we used propensity score matching analysis to minimize the impact of individual backgrounds on the findings concerning the relationships in question. Overall, part-time experience was significantly related to mental health problems and suicidal behavior even after eliminating background differences. Adolescents with part-time work experience had higher overall stress levels (odds ratio = 1.148; 95% confidence interval = 1.094, 1.205) than those without such experience, and more suicidal thoughts (odds ratio = 1.355; 95% confidence interval = 1.266, 1.450), suicide planning (odds ratio = 1.717; 95% confidence interval = 1.527, 1.929), and suicide attempts (odds ratio = 1.852; 95% confidence interval = 1.595, 2.151). Thus, it is important to pay increased attention to mental health and suicide-related issues in South Korean adolescents with part-time jobs.In the mammalian testes, Sertoli cells are the only somatic cells in the seminiferous tubules that provide structural, nutritional and regulatory support for developing spermatogenic cells. Sertoli cells only proliferate during the fetal and neonatal periods and enter a quiescent state after puberty. Functional evidences suggest that the size of Sertoli cell population determines sperm production and fertility. However, factors that direct Sertoli cell proliferation and maturation are not fully understood. Transcription factor E4F1 is a multifunctional protein that serves essential roles in cell fate decisions and because it interacts with pRB, a master regulator of Sertoli cell function, we hypothesized that E4F1 may have a functional role in Sertoli cells. Metabolism inhibitor E4f1 mRNA was present in murine testis and immunohistochemical staining confirmed that E4F1 was enriched in mature Sertoli cells. We generated a conditional knockout mouse model using Amh-cre and E4f1flox/flox lines to study E4F1 fucntion in Sertoli cells and the results showed that E4f1 deletion caused a significant reduction in testis size and fertility. Further analyses revealed that meiosis progression and spermiogenesis were normal, however, Sertoli cell proliferation was impaired and germ cell apoptosis was elevated in the testis of E4f1 conditional knockout mice. On the basis of these findings, we concluded that E4F1 was expressed in murine Sertoli cells and served important functions in regulating Sertoli cell proliferation and fertility.Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of neurodegenerative dementia and its timely diagnosis remains a major challenge in biomarker discovery. In the present study, we analyzed publicly available high-throughput low-sample -omics datasets from studies in AD blood, by the AutoML technology Just Add Data Bio (JADBIO), to construct accurate predictive models for use as diagnostic biosignatures. Considering data from AD patients and age-sex matched cognitively healthy individuals, we produced three best performing diagnostic biosignatures specific for the presence of AD A. A 506-feature transcriptomic dataset from 48 AD and 22 controls led to a miRNA-based biosignature via Support Vector Machines with three miRNA predictors (AUC 0.975 (0.906, 1.000)), B. A 38,327-feature transcriptomic dataset from 134 AD and 100 controls led to six mRNA-based statistically equivalent signatures via Classification Random Forests with 25 mRNA predictors (AUC 0.846 (0.778, 0.905)) and C. A 9483-feature proteomic dataset from 25 AD and 37 controls led to a protein-based biosignature via Ridge Logistic Regression with seven protein predictors (AUC 0.921 (0.849, 0.972)). These performance metrics were also validated through the JADBIO pipeline confirming stability. In conclusion, using the automated machine learning tool JADBIO, we produced accurate predictive biosignatures extrapolating available low sample -omics data. These results offer options for minimally invasive blood-based diagnostic tests for AD, awaiting clinical validation based on respective laboratory assays. They also highlight the value of AutoML in biomarker discovery.
