This review will evaluate the recent developments in AI for diagnostics, surgical interventions, and prognosis of corneal diseases. It also provides a brief overview of the newer AI dependent modalities in corneal diseases.

To evaluate the anterior segment changes of eye during pregnancy according to the trimesters and compare them with non-pregnant subjects.

This prospective study included 90 pregnant women (1.trimester 30, 2.trimester 30, 3.trimester 30 pregnants) and 30 non-pregnant women whose ages ranging from 20 to 40years. Intraocular pressure (IOP) and keratometry values were measured. Corneal thickness (CT) measurements were performed from pupil center, corneal apex and thinnest point of cornea. In addition, anterior chamber volume (ACV), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and anterior chamber angles (ACA) were also measured.

All trimester groups (1, 2 and 3.trimester) were compared with non-pregnant women for all measured parameters. The mean IOP values were significantly lower in 2nd and 3rd trimesters (

˂0.05). The differences of keratometric and CT measurements were not statistically significant in pregnant women when compared with non-pregnant women (

>.05). ACV was significantly higher in 1st trimester (

˂0.05); the difference of ACV in 2nd and 3rd trimesters was not significant (

We found that IOP decreased in 2nd and 3rd trimesters, and ACV increased in 1st trimester of pregnancy when compared with non-pregnant women. If the physiological changes in pregnancy are well known, diseases that affect anterior segment such as glaucoma and corneal disorders will be managed more accurately.

The present study aimed to explore in PD patients compared to healthy adults the relationship between cognitive performance and emotional creativity (EC), defined as a set of cognitive abilities and personality traits related to originality and appropriateness of emotional experience. PD patients (n = 22) and healthy controls (n = 40) underwent a complex neuropsychological assessment and were administrated with the self-reported Emotional Creativity Inventory (ECI) questionnaire. To explore the relationship between cognitive tests and the ECI, a regression analysis was conducted. PD patients and healthy controls differed significantly in the EC component Preparedness as well as in the neuropsychological test battery scores. The output of the regression analysis showed that the extent to which the neuropsychological tests relate to the ECI components is low.We investigated how oxidative stress (OS) alters Ca2+ handling in ventricular myocytes in early metabolic syndrome (MetS) in sucrose-fed rats. The effects of N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) or dl-Dithiothreitol (DTT) on systolic Ca2+ transients (SCaTs), diastolic Ca2+ sparks (CaS) and Ca2+ waves (CaW), recorded by confocal techniques, and L-type Ca2+ current (ICa), assessed by whole-cell patch clamp, were evaluated in MetS and Control cells. MetS myocytes exhibited decreased SCaTs and CaS frequency but unaffected CaW propagation. In Control cells, NAC/DTT reduced RyR2/SERCA2a activity blunting SCaTs, CaS frequency and CaW propagation, suggesting that basal ROS optimised Ca2+ signalling by maintaining RyR2/SERCA2a function and that these proteins facilitate CaW propagation. Conversely, NAC/DTT in MetS recovered RyR2/SERCA2a function, improving SCaTs and CaS frequency, but unexpectedly decreasing CaW propagation. Research suggests that decline in episodic memory and semantic memory, as well as functional abilities, can be sensitive in predicting disease progression. This study aimed to (a) investigate episodic and semantic memory performance differences between AD and MCI, (b) determine if memory performance predicts observation-based activities of daily living (ADLs), and (c) explore whether semantic memory mediates the relationship between episodic memory and ADLs. The results revealed, first, that AD participants performed significantly lower than the MCI participants across semantic memory and episodic memory tasks, with the exception of the Boston Naming Test. Second, hierarchical-stepwise regression analyses found that semantic memory significantly predicted DAFS orientation, communication, and financial skills in AD, but episodic memory predicted shopping skills. Furthermore, semantic memory significantly predicted DAFS transportation skills in AD and MCI. Third, within the overall sample, semantic memory mediated the relationship between episodic memory and ADLs. Taken together, the findings suggest decline in semantic memory (as measured by confrontational naming and category fluency) and episodic memory (as measured by list and complex visual design learning and recall) may lead to decline in different and specific aspects of functional abilities in AD and MCI.
