vements in six-minute walk distance, respectively, represent small and large improvements in walking ability, respectively. People with PAD who reported no change in their ability to walk distances over one year simultaneously declined by a mean of seven meters in the six-minute walk test. These findings are useful for interpreting results of randomized trials of interventions to improve walking performance in people with PAD. On the basis of the evident ability of neuronal olfactory systems to evaluate the intensity of an odorous stimulus and at the same time also recognize the identity of the odorant over a large range of concentrations, a few biologically-realistic hypotheses on some of the underlying neural processes are made. In particular, it is assumed that the receptor neurons mean firing-rate scale monotonically with odorant intensity, and that the receptor sensitivities range widely across odorants and receptor neurons hence leading to highly distributed representations of the stimuli. The mathematical implementation of the phenomenological postulates allows for inferring explicit functional relationships between some measurable quantities. It results that both the dependence of the mean firing-rate on odorant concentration and the statistical distribution of receptor sensitivity across the neuronal population are power-laws, whose respective exponents are in an arithmetic, testable relationship. V.The S-adenosylmethionine carrier (SAMC) is a membrane transport protein located on the inner membrane of mitochondria that catalyzes the import of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) into the mitochondrial matrix. SAMC mutations can cause a series of mitochondrial defects, including those affecting RNA stability, protein modification, mitochondrial translation and biosynthesis. Here, we describe the expression, purification and oligomerization of SAMC. The SAMC genes from three species were cloned into a eukaryotic expression vector with a GFP tag, and confocal microscopy analysis showed that these SAMCs were localized to mitochondria. OBJECTIVES Individuals with disabilities have high prevalence of sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and cardiometabolic disease. Physical activity monitors (i.e., step counters) are ill-suited for tracking wheelchair pushes. The study purpose was to investigate the validity of a consumer-level fitness tracker (Apple Watch) designed for wheelchair users. METHODS Validation study. A total of 15 wheelchair users with disabilities and 15 able-bodied individuals completed 3-min bouts of wheelchair propulsion on a treadmill and arm ergometry at pre-determined cadences as well as overground obstacle and Figure 8 courses. Tracker stroke counts were compared against direct observation. RESULTS We found no interaction of tracker counts and ability status across all tasks (P≥0.550), so results are presented for the combined sample. For treadmill tasks, Bland-Altman analysis (bias±limits of agreement) showed good agreement for only higher-rate fixed-frequency tasks (-15±48, -1±14, 0±5, and 0±27 for low, moderate, high, and va is suitable for tracking high-frequency standardized (i.e., treadmill) pushing and arm ergometry but not low-frequency pushing or overground tasks. Epidemiological evidence from observational studies suggests that dietary polyphenols (PPs) - phytochemicals found in a variety of plant-based foods - can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Clinical trials have also indicated that PPs may help manage the two key features of T2DM, hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. Since the incidence of T2DM is dramatically increasing worldwide, identifying food-based approaches that can reduce the risk of developing it and help manage its main risk factors in early-stage disease has clinical and socioeconomic relevance. After a brief overview of current epidemiological data on the incidence of T2DM in individuals consuming PP-rich diets, we review the evidence from clinical trials investigating PP-enriched foods and/or PP-based nutraceutical compounds, report their main results, and highlight the knowledge gaps that should be bridged to enhance our understanding of the role of PPs in T2DM development and management. Chemotherapy and targeted therapy can significantly improve survival rates in cancer, but multiple drug resistance (MDR) limits the efficacy of these approaches. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying MDR is crucial for improving drug efficacy and clinical outcomes of patients with cancer. S100 proteins belong to a family of calcium-binding proteins and have various functions in tumor development. Increasing evidence demonstrates that the dysregulation of various S100 proteins contributes to the development of drug resistance in tumors, providing a basis for the development of predictive and prognostic biomarkers in cancer. Therefore, a combination of biological inhibitors or sensitizers of dysregulated S100 proteins could enhance therapeutic responses. In this review, we provide a detailed overview of the mechanisms by which S100 family members influence resistance of tumors to cancer treatment, with a focus on the development of effective strategies for overcoming MDR. BACKGROUND Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious central nervous system disorder caused by trauma that has gradually become a major challenge in clinical medical research. As an important branch of worldwide medical research, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is rapidly moving towards a path of reform and innovation. Therefore, this paper systematically reviews research related to existing TCM treatments for SCI, with the aims of identifying deficits and shortcomings within the field, and proposing feasible alternative prospects. METHODS All data and conclusions in this paper were obtained from articles published by peers in relevant fields. PubMed, SciFinder, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and CNKI databases were searched for relevant articles. Results regarding TCM for SCI were identified and retrieved, then manually classified and selected for inclusion in this review. RESULTS The literature search identified a total of 652 articles regarding TCM for SCI. Twenty-eight treatments (16 active ingredients, nine herbs, and three compound prescriptions) were selected from these articles; the treatments have been used for the prevention and treatment of SCI.
