COVID 19 infections may be associated with a wide range of bacterial and fungal co-infections. Mucormycosis is a fungal infection primarily affecting immunocompromised individuals. We have observed sudden rise of mucormycosis cases in post COVID 19 patients. Here we have reported 100 cases of mucormycosis associated with COVID 19. To study epidemiology and clinical features of rhino orbital mucormycosis in post COVID 19 patients. To evaluate efficacy of medical as well as surgical treatment in such patients. This was an observational mixed (retrospective + prospective) study with a duration of 2 months. After noting demographic data, necessary radiological investigation was advised and representative tissue was sent for KOH and histopathological examination. Medical and surgical treatment was planned accordingly. Most patients (55%) presented with complaint of headache and facial pain. Hard palate involvement was observed in 45% patients. Unilateral presentation (68%) was more common. Only 25% patients who presented early had normal vision. We reported 22 patients with complete loss of vision. Eye movements were restricted in 58% patients. Diabetes mellitus is most common predisposing factor (65%). 9 patients required orbital exentration. Only 18% patients required Amphotericin for more than 14 days. Immune dysregulation caused by COVID 19 infection in addition to widespread use of steroids and broad-spectrum antibiotics may lead to the development mucormycosis. Diabetes Mellitus type II is another important risk factor and the presence of both have additional effect in causing mucormycosis. Headache and facial pain should be considered highly suspicious of mucormycosis. Early diagnosis with efficient treatment can improve prognosis.
To compare the visual acuity (VA), comfort, and patient preference in a soft toric contact lens (TCL) versus soft spherical contact lens (SCL) in low astigmatic subjects during the contact lens (CL) trial.
This subject-masked, block randomized, 2×2 crossover study recruited 40 neophyte subjects (80 eyes) aged 18 to 33y with astigmatism in the range of 0.75-1.25 D with or without spherical power from -6.00 D to +6.00 D. The participants were scheduled for two days CL trial and were fitted with the best-fit SCL and TCL. After 4h of wear, they were assessed objectively for high contrast VA and subjective vision, comfort, and preference.
The responses of 36 subjects (response rate 90%) with a mean age of 23.02±2.97y (range 18 to 33y) were analyzed. One-line improvement of monocular VA in the logMAR chart was reported to TCL as compared to SCL (-0.044±0.06
0.04±0.03 logMAR,
=0.01) but the binocular vision remained similar (-0.12±0.07
-0.14±0.04 logMAR,
=0.38). Subjects felt a noticeable difference in clarity when shifted to TCL as compared to the SCL. The satisfaction with vision (vision quality) was significantly better with TCL (
=0.03). The fatigue with TCL was graded less at 2.5±0.6, compared to SCL at 4.6±1.3 (
=0.04). Thirty-three participants (91.6%) preferred to use contact lens of which 26 participants (79%) preferred TCL.
The findings suggest that VA and comfort are better with TCL as compared to SCL which is only observed if the patient was offered both offering SCL with spherical equivalent power alone as the first option can mislead the practitioner; TCL trial should be the first choice of the lens in low-to-moderate astigmatism.

The accumulation of oxidized phospholipids in the outer layer of the retina plays a key role in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells death and the formation of choroidal neovascularization (CNV), which mean the development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Recent studies have shown that MET can regulate lipid metabolism, inhibit inflammation, and prohibit retinal cell death and CNV formation due to various pathological factors. Here, newly discovered functions of MET that may be used for the prevention and treatment of AMD were reviewed.Age-related eye diseases, including cataract, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy (DR), and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), are the leading causes of vision loss in the world. Several studies have shown that the occurrence and development of these diseases have an important relationship with oxidative stress in the eye. The Keap1-Nrf2-ARE pathway is a classical pathway that resists oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Sodium Bicarbonate This pathway is also active in the development of age-related eye diseases. A variety of drugs have been shown to treat age-related eye diseases through the Keap1-Nrf2-ARE (Kelch-like ECH-Associating protein 1- nuclear factor erythroid 2 related factor 2-antioxidant response element) pathway. This review describes the role of oxidative stress in the development of age-related eye diseases, the function and regulation of the Keap1-Nrf2-ARE pathway, and the therapeutic effects of drugs associated with this pathway on age-related eye diseases.
To analyze the intellectual structure and recent research trends in diabetic retinopathy (DR) and unearth potential knowledge.
English DR publication included in this study was exported from the Web of Science Core Collection, and Chinese DR publication was exported from China National Knowledge Infrastructure from the establishment time of the database to 2019. CiteSpace and Microsoft Excel were used to visually analyze DR research, including analysis of the number of publications, highly cited publication analysis, spatial distribution analysis, and keyword co-occurrence analysis.
A total of 23 795 English studies and 11 577 Chinese studies, including 2089 studies related to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), were obtained. The data suggested the following 1) The number of English and Chinese DR publications increased over time, and the growth rate of English publications was relatively fast. 2) The distribution of international scholars and institutions was close, while the distribution was scattere monitoring of disease progression. The advantages of TCM in the prevention of DR have attracted attention, and it is worth incorporating this with Western medicine to address this challenge.
To understand retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening and treatment preferences among Chinese ophthalmologists.
A Chinese language survey was administered anonymously using WebQ (Catalyst, Seattle, WA, USA) among Chinese ROP screeners from December 2016 to January 2017.
Among 70 ophthalmologists contacted, 65 responded (93%; 78% female, mean age 40y, 57% pediatric ophthalmologists and 25% retina specialists). Most used screening criteria of birth weight ≤2 kg (62%) with variation in cut-off gestational age (≤37wk, 34%; ≤34wk, 22%; ≤32wk, 31%). RetCam (Natus Medical Incorporated, Pleasanton, CA, USA) wide-field fundus photography assisted most screeners (72%) and was exclusively used by many (29%). Among 55 ophthalmologists treating ROP, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was preferred over laser for both zone I (76%
24%) and zone II ROP (58%
42%). Retina specialists (
=0.004) and ophthalmologists with >3mo of training (
=0.03) were more likely to use anti-VEGF over laser for zone I ROP. Lack of laser training (8/20, 40%), access (6/20, 30%) and anesthesia (4/20, 20%) were common barriers to laser treatment.
Chinese ROP screeners favor anti-VEGF injection and RetCam imaging for ROP management. A better understanding of ROP screening and treatment informs future research and education efforts in China.

To investigate the patterns and outcomes of open globe injuries in the elderly population in Iran.
In this retrospective cross-sectional chart review, medical records of 248 patients (aged 60y and more) with the diagnosis of open globe injury from 2006 to 2016 were reviewed. Demographic features, type, and mechanism of open globe injury, ocular trauma score (OTS), visual acuity before and after treatment, the zone of injuries, and the associated injuries found at the presentation or thereafter were documented.
A total of 248 eyes of 248 patients were included. The mean age was 69.2±5.8y (range 60-90y). Male/ female ratio was about 31 (187
61). The three most common causes of injury were falling (25.2%), sharp objects (18.9%), and tree branches (13.9%). Penetrating injury accounted for most of the geriatric ocular trauma (50.4%), followed by globe rupture (40.3%), intraocular foreign body (IOFB; 7.3%), and perforating injury (2.0%). The median raw OTS for the population was 60.5 and the most common OTS class was 3. The injuries tend to affect zone I more than zone II and zone III. The only predictor of final visual acuity was the class of OTS (
<0.001).
Geriatric open globe injury should be valued specifically. The most common type of open globe injury in Iran is penetrating injuries but falling remain the main cause. The OTS class must be considered as an important predictor of final visual acuity.

To investigate the association of axial length (AL) and ocular factors on AL elongation.
A retrospective chart review of patients who underwent two or more AL examinations for more than two years. Totally 4 groups were divided according to initial AL (<24 mm, 24-26 mm, 26-28 mm, ≥28 mm). Initial fundus photograph was used to find risk factors associated AL elongation.
The mean age of the patients was 47.21±7.79y. AL remained almost unchanged in the groups with AL<24 mm and 24≤AL<26 mm. On the contrary, AL increased by 0.011 mm/y in the group with 26≤AL<28 mm and 0.035 mm/y in the group with AL≥28 mm (
<0.001). In high myopia, AL elongation increased in eye with longer AL (
=0.003,
=0.024), female gender (
=0.014,
=0.019), eye with larger peripapillary chorioretinal atrophic area (
=0.002,
=0.019), and smaller vascular arcade angle (
=-0.004,
=0.006). The risk of elongation 0.03 mm/y in high myopia was increased in female gender (
=0.040), and gradually increased in eye with large peripapillary chorioretinal atrophy area (
<0.01).
AL elongate significantly in the eye with longer AL, female gender, and the eye with larger atrophic area and smaller arcade angle on fundus photography.
