In this review, the physiological changes likely affecting transcription during growth arrest are first considered. Next, possible adaptations to help facilitate ongoing transcription during growth arrest are discussed. Finally, new insights from several recently published datasets investigating mRNA transcripts in single bacterial cells at various growth phases will be explored. Keywords Growth arrest, stationary phase, RNA polymerase, nucleoid condensation, population heterogeneity.Currently little is known about the clients and conditions final-year physiotherapy students are exposed to in private practice settings. The aim of this study is to describe the clients and conditions encountered by final-year physiotherapy students during a six-week full-time private practice clinical placement. Client data of conditions were collected over 11 years (2008-2018) from final year physiotherapy students' client reports in a university clinic, Christchurch, New Zealand. Data for anatomical site and pathology were categorized using the Orchards Sports Injury Classification System 10 and descriptive analyses completed. Students saw a mean of 22 (SD 5) unique clients. The anatomical sites most encountered were the shoulder (97.4% of students), lumbar spine (96.3%), knee (95.8%) and ankle (91.2%). The pathologies most encountered were joint sprain (100%), muscle injury (90%), and tendon injury (88.4%). While final year physiotherapy students are exposed to a substantial number of clients encompassing major regions and condition types, this exposure is limited in scope. The findings offer a basis for discussion about what clinical exposure to clients and conditions might best support the transition from physiotherapy student to new graduate in private practice settings.Tests given to learners before they study new information can enhance the learning of that information. When responding to these pretests, learners typically generate answers that are incorrect but that are nevertheless helpful for improving the learning of the correct answers. The present research examined how providing learners with context prior to pretesting can enhance the benefits of pretesting. Across two experiments, participants were given a pretest for half of the to-be-learned information and then asked to read a passage about a fictional topic, an alien civilisation known as Yoffas (Experiment 1 and Experiment 2), or a unique fruit called the Anona (Experiment 2). Participants who read a short paragraph contextualising the to-be-learned information exhibited a significantly larger pretesting effect than participants who did not, with this interaction being observed regardless of whether memory was tested after a 5-min delay or 1-week delay, and regardless of whether contextualisation was manipulated between-subjects or within-subjects. These results suggest that what learners know prior to a pretest can have an impact on the extent to which learners benefit from that pretest.Water-pipe tobacco smoking is harmful to health, yet its rate of prevalence remains uncertain. Recent evidence has shown that the prevalence of water-pipe smoking among students is higher than in the general population. In this study, a systematic review of related literature on water-pipe use was conducted, and for this purpose, 76 articles were examined in the study. In this vein, geographic distribution and time trends of water-pipe consumption in Iran were considered. The results of this study showed that lifetime, last-year, and last-month prevalence of water-pipe smoking use among Iranian students were 28.78 (25.07-32.49), 20.84 (16.01-25.66), and 16.36 (11.86-20.85), respectively. The results also showed a wide variation by the region and sex in Iran. This study has shown the importance of addressing public prevention and alerting programs in schools and universities.This scoping review aimed to systematically map studies/tests for assessing the tactical domain of young soccer players. The study followed the PRISMA-ScR and Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines. The databases searched were Scopus, SPORTDiscus, SciELO, LILACS, and BDTD. The eligibility criteria were defined based on the elements of population, context, and concept, without restrictions on the period, language, and type of publication. Twenty-four papers were included, from 1997 to 2020, totalling 29 tests/instruments for the assessment of the tactical domain, with the majority of studies having an European sample. Twelve terms were used to nominate the tactical component, regardless of the assessment method and approach. Six tests met eight or nine criteria in the critical appraisal TCTOF, TACSIS Spanish version, Semi-Structured Interview, TCTP-OE, GPET, and FUTSAT. Thus, it is concluded that studies and tests for the assessment of the tactical domain of young soccer players are recent and mainly European; there is no consensus about the adopted terminology; and few tests met the majority of the quality criteria. Therefore, we suggest a) the construction/adaptation of tests with samples from other continents; b) the use of the proposed criteria; and c) that the terms tactical knowledge and tactical performance are adopted.In developing nations, road traffic crashes involving pedestrians have become a foremost worry. Presently, most of the road safety assessment projects and selection of interventions are still restricted to traditional methods that depend on historical crash data. However, in low and middle-income countries such as India, the availability, reliability, and accuracy of crash data are uncertain. Alternatively, Post Encroachment Time (PET) has added attention as a proximal indicator to examine pedestrian-vehicular potential crashes and address pedestrian risk under mixed traffic conditions. Hence, it will be meaningful to examine if the PET is a good substitute for pedestrian-vehicular crashes and if so, what built environment and pedestrian-level factors influence PET. In this background, the present study establishes a mathematical association between the average PET value of the urban road network level and actual crashes. Afterward, multiple linear regression models are developed to study the impact of the built environment, traffic parameters, and pedestrian-level attributes on PET. The outcomes indicate that vehicle speed, lack of enforcement, absence of traffic signal (for traffic as well as pedestrians), land use type, slum population, inadequate sight distance, pedestrian's state of crossing, and pedestrian's risky crossing behaviour substantially affect the average PET at road network-level.Suicide and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) are prevalent in emerging adulthood and one possible commonality is emotion regulation deficits. Participants (N = 708) completed multiple self-report measures that assessed emotion regulation deficits, depression, past-year NSSI frequency, past-year suicide attempts, and recent suicide ideation severity. Controlling for depression, linear regression analyses found that the only significant association was between greater deficits in emotion regulation strategies and greater recent NSSI frequency and suicide ideation intensity. These results suggest some commonality in emotion regulation deficits across NSSI and suicide ideation. Prevention and intervention efforts should teach emotion regulation strategies to lower self-harm risk.Over 200 million people in over 35 countries are affected by excessive fluoride in their waters. For people that do not have access to a centralized water treatment plant, there is a need for an on-site defluoridation system that requires no special operational expertise, does not use hazardous chemicals, and is sustainable by the local population. 8 different calcium phosphate precipitation systems were analyzed and tested for fluoride removal effectiveness. An effective system would have final fluoride concentrations less than 1.5 mg/L and final solutions with pH within drinkable limits. Phosphoric acid with the addition of a calcium carbonate source was found to have a 99.8% fluoride removal rate. Monosodium phosphate with addition of slaked lime was also found to be effective with a 99.98% fluoride removal rate. An optimal slaked lime to monosodium phosphate ratio that achieved effective fluoride removal and neutral pH was found. With 0.45 g of Ca(OH)2 and 1 g of NaH2PO4, initial fluoride concentrations up to 100 mg/L or more could be reduced to near zero concentrations, and a volume of approximately 337 mL of water with a concentration of 5 mg/L F- could to be reduced to less than 1.5 mg/L F-.

Thalidomide is an immunomodulatory drug and first choice in the treatment of erythema nodosum leprosum. Given its teratogenic potential, it is essential that an effective contraceptive method is used, especially a long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) method. The subdermal etonogestrel (ENG)-releasing implant is an adequate method due to the high effectiveness and long-term use. However, interaction between thalidomide and ENG has not been well documented. Concern arises because thalidomide interacts with cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzymes that metabolize sexual steroids. JNJ-42226314 AIM We aimed to study the effectiveness and safety of the ENG-implant in a thalidomide user.

Case report of a sexually active 21-year-old patient with both Hansen's disease and leprosy reaction type 2 treated with thalidomide requiring effective contraception. Follow-up was up to 36 months after implant placement.

Contraception with ENG-implant was effective and safe, based on clinical parameters (reduction of menstrual flow and cervical mucus thickening) and laboratory parameters (gonadotropins and sexual steroids).

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case reported which presents a patient in simultaneous use of thalidomide and ENG-implant. Although this case report preliminary supports effectiveness and safety of ENG-implant as a contraceptive option in women using thalidomide, rigorous drug-drug interaction research is needed to better characterize the interaction between thalidomide and the ENG-implant.

Pancreatic cancer is a highly lethal disease with a close association between incidence and mortality. First-line (FL) palliative chemotherapy prolongs survival and alleviates cancer-related symptoms. However, the survival benefit of second-line (SL) treatment is uncertain, as studies fail to consistently show prolonged survival for any given SL treatment, and in the absence of prognostic factors patients will receive a futile treatment. The aim of this study was to examine prognostic factors and survival in patients with pancreatic cancer, with special reference to SL therapy.

This retrospective study included all patients with histopathologically verified pancreatic adenocarcinoma who received palliative chemotherapy at Skåne University Hospital and died between 1 Feb 2015 and 31 Dec 2017.

During the study period, a total of 170 patients with pancreatic cancer died after receiving palliative chemotherapy. Of these, 72 had received SL treatment after progression on FL treatment. Median overall survival (OS) from the start of SL treatment was 5.
