The findings may have clinical implications as oxygen is one of the most common therapies given in NICUs. The stored plasma samples from the RCT of alow-GI vs. conventional diet in obese children were analyzed for adipokines leptin, adiponectin, resistin, and visfatin. Their relationships with clinical outcomes were assessed.
Fifty-two participants completed the 6-month intervention trial (mean age 12.0 ± 2.0 years, 35 boys). Both groups had significantly decreased BMI z-scores from baseline whereas the low-GI group had significant reduction in fasting insulin and HOMA-IR. There were no differences in adipokines between the groups before and after the intervention. However, there was an association between baseline leptin and the change of fat mass index (FMI)but not the insulin resistance in both groups. The higher the baseline leptin was, the lower the changes were for FMI after the intervention.
Despite no demonstrable effect of low-GI diet on plasma adipokines, the higher baseline leptin was correlscore and FMI in both groups. Baseline leptin could be a useful predictor of the change in body composition in an obesity intervention trial.
We prepared a meta-analysis on case reports in children with COVID-19, aiming to identify potential risk factors for severe illness and to develop a prediction model for risk assessment.
Literature retrieval, case report selection, and data extraction were independently completed by two authors. STATA software (version 14.1) and R programming environment (v4.0.2) were used for data handling.
This meta-analysis was conducted based on 52 case reports, including 203 children (96 boys) with COVID-19. By severity, 26 (12.94%), 160 (79.60%), and 15 (7.46%) children were diagnosed as asymptomatic, mild/moderate, and severe cases, respectively. After adjusting for age and sex, 11 factors were found to be significantly associated with the risk of severe illness relative to asymptomatic or mild/moderate illness, especially for dyspnea/tachypnea (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval, P 6.61, 4.12-9.09, <0.001) and abnormal chest X-ray (3.33, 1.84-4.82, <0.001). A nomogram modeling age, comorbidity, cough, dyspnea or tachypnea, CRP, and LDH was developed, and prediction performance was good as reflected by the C-index.
Our findings provide systematic evidence for the contribution of comorbidity, cough, dyspnea or tachypnea, CRP, and LDH, both individually and jointly, to develop severe symptoms in children with asymptomatic or mild/moderate COVID-19.

We aimed to compare the ten different scores (by Kobayashi, Egami, Harada, Formosa, Sano, Piram et al., Wu et al., Yang et al., Tan et al., and Kanai et al.) to assess their performance in predicting IVIG resistance in Turkish children.
Complete and incomplete KD patients diagnosed with KD at Hacettepe University between June 2007 and September 2019 were evaluated retrospectively.
A total of 129 patients, 79 boys (61.2%), with a median age 36 (IQR 19.5-57.0) months were evaluated. Sixteen patients (12.4%) had IVIG resistance. Sensitivity was low for all the ten scores. Tan, Sano, and Egami predictive models had the highest specificity (97.3, 89.4, 86.7%, respectively). This is a secondary analysis of the DALI study, a randomised controlled trial in nine European countries. Pregnant women with a pre-pregnancy body mass index of ≥29 kg/m2 were randomly assigned to counselling for healthy eating (HE), physical activity (PA), HE&PA combined, or to usual care. We considered five maternal metabolic factors at 24-28 and 35-37 weeks of gestation, and four cord blood factors as possible mediators of the effect of combined HE&PA counselling on neonatal adiposity. From all potential mediators, the intervention only affected cord blood non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), which was higher in the HE&PA group compared to UC (0.068 (mmol/L), 95% CI 0.004 to 0.133). Cord blood NEFA did not mediate the HE&PA intervention effects on neonatal sum of skinfolds or cord blood leptin, based on an indirect effect on skinfolds of 0.018 (mm), 95% CI -0.217 to 0.253 and an indirect effect on leptin of -0.143 (μg/l), 95% CI -0.560 to 0.273.
