The band Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also well-known studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The group took their name from a Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.
In 1981 the third album by Toto Turn Back was a complete failure however, they bounce back with their fourth release Isolation that features two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour makes Toto a household name across the globe.
After a hiatus of a couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is a departure from the ballads of previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
In the course of recording the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and make a new album using the new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and provides the band with a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begin an extensive tour around the world. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band covering Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.
