The demand for food, feed, cosmeceutical, and nutraceutical supplements/additives from natural sources has been rapidly increasing, with expectations for a faster expansion than the growth of the global markets in the coming years. In this framework, a particular interest is given to carotenoids due to their outstanding antioxidant activities, particularly the xanthophylls class. Torularhodin is one of these carotenoids that stands out for its multifunctional role as antioxidant, anticancer and antimicrobial, yet its commercial potential is still unexplored. Although most xanthophylls can be naturally found in microbial, plant and animal sources, torularhodin is only produced by microbial species, especially red oleaginous yeast. The microbial production of xanthophylls has many advantages as compared to other natural sources, such as the need for low production area, easier extraction, high yields (at optimum operating conditions), and low (or no) seasonal, climatic, and geographic variation dependency. Due to the importance of natural products and their relevance to the market, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the properties, characteristics and potential health benefits of torularhodin. Moreover, the most promising developments in both upstream and downstream processing to obtain this colorant from microbial sources are considered. For this purpose, the main microorganisms used for torularhodin production are firstly reviewed, including biosynthesis pathway and torularhodin properties. Following, an overall analysis of the processing aspects related with its extraction, separation and purification is provided. Lastly, current status and future trends of torularhodin-based processes and products such as therapeutic agents or biomaterials are discussed, indicating promising directions toward biorefinery and circular economy.Theanine, a tea plant-specific non-proteinogenic amino acid, is the most abundant free amino acid in tea leaves. It is also one of the most important quality components of tea because it endows the "umami" taste, relaxation-promoting, and many other health benefits of tea infusion. Its content in tea leaves is directly correlated with the quality and price of green tea. Theanine biosynthesis primarily occurs in roots and is transported to new shoots in tea plants. Recently, great advances have been made in theanine metabolism and transport in tea plants. Along with the deciphering of the genomic sequences of tea plants, new genes in theanine metabolic pathway were discovered and functionally characterized. BAI1 clinical trial Theanine transporters were identified and were characterized on the affinity for theanine, substrate specificity, spatiotemporal expression, and the role in theanine root-to-shoot transport. The mechanisms underlying the regulation of theanine accumulation by cultivars, seasons, nutrients, and environmental factors are also being rapidly uncovered. Transcription factors were identified to be critical regulators of theanine biosynthesis. In this review, we summarize the progresses in theanine biosynthesis, catabolism, and transport processes. We also discuss the future studies on theanine in tea plants, and application of the knowledge to crops to synthesize theanine to improve the health-promoting quality of non-tea crops.Effective public health communication should take into the consideration how communicated risk perceptions might influence the public. Although many health behavior theories claim that high perceived risk likelihood motivates preventive health behaviors, this general prediction is complicated by different ways of estimating risk likelihood. Our review of 14 previous studies on perceived risk of infectious diseases revealed different measures of risk likelihood and inconsistent findings regarding the relationship between perceived risk likelihood and behavioral intention. Drawn from the review, we examined the predictive power of different types of risk likelihood on intention to prevent infectious diseases. Using two separate data sets, collected during the 2015 outbreak of the Middle East respiratory syndrome (N = 557) and the COVID-19 pandemic of 2021 (N = 1,001), we demonstrated that perceived risk likelihood that specifies future inaction on health behaviors (i.e., conditional absolute risk perception) better predicted behavioral intention than did other types of risk perceptions. When the effect of conditional absolute risk perception was controlled, the behavioral intention and unconditional absolute risk perception showed a negative relationship. The findings have theoretical and practical implications that can inform strategic communication during future outbreaks.Herein, a series of N'-benzylidene-3,4-dimethoxybenzohydrazide derivatives were designed and synthesised to target the multidrug efflux pump (MATE). The antibacterial activities were screened against S. aureus, Acinetobacter, S. typhi, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa, whereas their antifungal activities were screened against C. albicans. Compounds 4a, 4h, and 4i showed the most promising antibacterial and antifungal activities. Moreover, compounds 4h and 4i being the broader and superior members regarding their antimicrobial effects were selected to be further evaluated via in vivo testing using biochemical analysis and liver/kidney histological examination. Additionally, molecular docking was carried out to attain further deep insights into the synthesised compounds' binding modes. Also, ADMET studies were performed to investigate the physicochemical/pharmacokinetics features and toxicity parameters of the synthesised derivatives. Finally, a structure-antimicrobial activity relationship study was established to fgical examination.A molecular docking study and ADMET in silico studies were performed.A structure-antimicrobial activity relationship study was established to facilitate further structural modifications in the future.

Residents have limited time and much to learn. Mounting evidence shows that Desirable Difficulty (DD) learning strategies can ease that imbalance, but few studies have specifically studied combinations of these strategies.

We tested two different combinations of DD strategies a double combination of distributed practice and retrieval practice and a triple combination additionally including interleaved practice. We compared residents' annual In-Training Exam (ITE) scores and graduates' board certification performance between both DD curricula and a historical baseline.

Average ITE scores rose from 149.06 in the historical baseline to 160.04 under the combined DD curricula (

< 0.001). Average ITE scores fell from 162.50 under the double combination to 155.11 under the triple combination (

= 0.03). There were no significant changes in graduates' board performance between any of the curricula.

These results add to the evidence that DD strategies can enhance residents' learning. The drop in ITE scores under the triple DD combination may suggest that it pushed learners past beneficial

difficulty into detrimental overwhelming difficulty. Further research should apply this framework in larger and more diverse settings to clarify how these DD strategies can be optimally used to enhance residents' learning.

Obstetric ultrasound is a harmless, cheap, and noninvasive imaging modality that helps to scan a pregnant mother and delivers parents with a real-time image of the fetus. As the number of pregnancies rises globally, the demand for obstetric ultrasound becomes even more pressing.

To assess pregnant women's knowledge, attitude, and associated factors toward obstetric ultrasound in public hospitals, Ethiopia.

Institutional based cross-sectional study was employed. Systematic random technique was used to select 419 pregnant women from 10 April 2021 through 2 June 2021. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data during a face-to-face interview. Then the data were coded, cleaned, and entered into Epidemiological data version (EPIDATA) 3.1 and exported to the statistical package for Social Science version 23.0 for analyses. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify statistically significant associations between dependent and independent variables. The odds ratio at 95%was 35.5% and 69.5%, respectively, and it can be improved with appropriate interventions like ensuring the practice of obstetric ultrasound scan to all antenatal women. Obstetric care providers at the antenatal care units should advice pregnant women for obstetric ultrasound scan as per World Health Organization recommendations of one obstetric ultrasound scan before 24 weeks of gestation.

Evidence was obtained that the reaction simultaneously proceeds through aromatisation and pinacol-pinacolone type 1,2-alkyl shift. Use of excess iodine afforded iodomethyl derivative (5) that could serve as starting material for the synthesis of additional analogs.Laser is being widely used in treating pigmented lesions nowadays. Linear and whorled nevoid hypermelanosis (LWNH) is a rare pigmentary anomaly, and there are only a handful of cases of successful treatment, all with QS 532- and 755-nm laser. The objective of this study was to examine the clinical outcome of QS 694-nm ruby laser in the treatment of LWNH. We report on a 4-year-old boy presented with asymptomatic macular hyperpigmentation over the entire cheek who underwent 3 treatment sessions with QS 694-nm ruby laser. One month after the last treatment, the patient demonstrated significant improvement to the treatment area. Aside from post-procedural purpura lasting approximately 1 week, the patient experienced no serious adverse effects. No recurrence was observed during the 3-month follow-up. Given the excellent results seen in our patients, we recommended the use of QS 694-nm ruby laser as a safe and effective treatment in patients with LWNH.

Medical training organisations have a duty to prepare medical graduates for future safe, competent practice. Decisions about underperformance are high stakes at the postgraduate level and failure to fail can occur. We aimed to explore this concept from a systems and supervisor perspective.

Supervisors of specialist physician trainees were invited to provide written feedback on failure to fail as part of a broader anonymous supervisor survey. They were provided with a trigger statement and responded in free-text format. A deductive content analysis was undertaken through the lenses of supervisor and institution.

Of 663 supervisors who responded to the broader survey, 373 (56%) provided feedback on the failure to fail trigger statement. Analyses indicated an interplay between trainee and supervisor characteristics, and broader system elements. System elements that contributed to failure to fail trainees included lack of longitudinal monitoring and quality of assessment information. Supervisor characteristics included confident, conflicted and avoidant behaviours towards underperforming trainees.
