However, the exact role of DNA methylation and demethylation in MSC-based tissue regeneration and immunomodulation requires further investigation. In this review, we discuss how DNA methylation and demethylation function in multi-lineage cell differentiation and immunomodulation of MSCs based on previously published work. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of the role of DNA methylation and demethylation in MSCs for the treatment of metabolic or immune-related diseases. The postnatal skeleton undergoes growth, modeling, and remodeling. The human skeleton is a composite of diverse tissue types, including bone, cartilage, fat, fibroblasts, nerves, blood vessels, and hematopoietic cells. Fracture nonunion and bone defects are among the most challenging clinical problems in orthopedic trauma. The incidence of nonunion or bone defects following fractures is increasing. Stem and progenitor cells mediate homeostasis and regeneration in postnatal tissue, including bone tissue. As multipotent stem cells, skeletal stem cells (SSCs) have a strong effect on the growth, differentiation, and repair of bone regeneration. In recent years, a number of important studies have characterized the hierarchy, differential potential, and bone formation of SSCs. read more Here, we describe studies on and applications of SSCs and/or mesenchymal stem cells for bone regeneration.Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, are a group of incurable neurological disorders, characterized by the chronic progressive loss of different neuronal subtypes. However, despite its increasing prevalence among the ever-increasing aging population, little progress has been made in the coincident immense efforts towards development of therapeutic agents. Research interest has recently turned towards stem cells including stem cells-derived exosomes, neurotrophic factors, and their combination as potential therapeutic agents in neurodegenerative diseases. In this review, we summarize the progress in therapeutic strategies based on stem cells combined with neurotrophic factors and mesenchymal stem cells-derived exosomes for neurodegenerative diseases, with an emphasis on the combination therapy.Autophagy is a highly regulated catabolic process in which superfluous, damaged organelles and other cytoplasmic constituents are delivered to the lysosome for clearance and the generation of macromolecule substrates during basal or stressed conditions. Autophagy is a bimodal process with a context dependent role in the initiation and the development of cancers. For instance, autophagy provides an adaptive response to cancer stem cells to survive metabolic stresses, by influencing disease propagation via modulation of essential signaling pathways or by promoting resistance to chemotherapeutics. Autophagy has been implicated in a cross talk with apoptosis. Understanding the complex interactions provides an opportunity to improve cancer therapy and the clinical outcome for the cancer patients. In this review, we provide a comprehensive view on the current knowledge on autophagy and its role in cancer cells with a particular focus on cancer stem cell homeostasis. The short paper provides an overview on how geographic issues have become increasingly relevant to public health research and policy, particularly through the lens of geographic information systems (GIS). It covers six themes with an emphasis on methodological issues. (1) Our health-related behavior varies across geographic settings, so should public health policy. (2) Facilities (supply) and patients (demand) in a health care market interact with each other across geopolitical borders, and measures of health care accessibility need to capture that. (3) Our health outcome is the result of joint effects of individual attributes and neighborhood characteristics, and an adequate definition of neighborhood is critical for assessing neighborhood effect. (4) Disease rates in areas of small population are unreliable, and one effective way to mitigate the problem is to construct a larger, internally-homogenous and comparable area unit. (5) Defining a scientific geographic unit for health care market is critical for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to evaluate health care delivery, and GIS enables us to define the unit (e.g., primary care service areas, hospital service areas, and cancer service areas) automatically, efficiently and optimally. (6) Aside from various optimization objectives around "efficiency", it is as important to plan the location and allocation of health care resources toward maximum equality in health care access. Case studies are cited to illustrate each theme.Subjective well-being (SWB) is an individual's judgment about their overall well-being. Research has shown that activities that elevate people's sense of SWB have a significant effect on their overall health. There are two dimensions of SWB Affective and Cognitive dimensions. However, studies on SWB usually focus more on one dimension, ignoring the other dimension. Also, most existing studies on SWB focused on individuals from Western cultures. Research has shown that the influence of personality on subjective well-being is moderated by culture. Thus, to advance research in personalizing persuasive health interventions, this study focuses on Africans (n=732). link2 Specifically, we investigate the relationship between the Big-Five personality traits and both dimensions of SWB using the constructs Happiness, Satisfaction with Life, Social, Psychological and Emotional well-being. Our results reveal that health informatics designers who design persuasive technologies to promote SWB would need to tailor designs along personality traits and SWB constructs. Accordingly, for users high in Agreeableness, the design should be focus on promoting their feelings of Happiness and Social Well-being. For users who exhibit Neuroticism, designers should focus on designing to promote Psychological well-being and Emotional well-being. Based on our findings, we offer guidelines for tailoring persuasive health interventions to promote individuals' SWB based on their personality. We thus highlight areas personal health informatics design can benefit. We adapt an existing spherical U-Net architecture with our recent surface data augmentation technique to improve the sulcal labeling accuracy in a developmental cohort. Specifically, our framework consists of the following key components (1) augmented geometrical features being generated during cortical surface registration, (2) spherical U-Net architecture to efficiently fit the augmented features, and (3) postrefinement of sulcal labeling by optimizing spatial coherence via a graph cut technique. We validate our method on 30 healthy subjects with manual labeling of sulcal regions within PFC. In the experiments, we demonstrate significantly improved labeling performance (0.7749) in mean Dice overlap compared to that of multi-atlas (0.6410) and standard spherical U-Net (0.7011) approaches, respectively (p less then 0.05). Additionally, the proposed method achieves a full set of sulcal labels in 20 seconds in this developmental cohort.High-throughput microbiological experimentation using droplet microfluidics is limited due to the complexity and restricted versatility of the available detection techniques. Current detection setups are bulky, complicated, expensive, and require tedious optical alignment procedures while still mostly limited to fluorescence. In this work, we demonstrate an optofluidic detection setup for multi-parametric analyses of droplet samples by easily integrating micro-lenses and embedding optical fibers for guiding light in and out of the microfluidic chip. The optofluidic setup was validated for detection of absorbance, fluorescence, and scattered light. The developed platform was used for simultaneous detection of multiple parameters in different microbiological applications like cell density determination, growth kinetics, and antibiotic inhibition assays. Combining the high-throughput potential of droplet microfluidics with the ease, flexibility, and simplicity of optical fibers results in a powerful platform for microbiological experiments.Cat scratch disease is an infection caused by Bartonella Henselae with characteristic presentation of lymphadenopathy. Despite self-limited nature of the disease in most cases, it accounts for many lymph node biopsies performed since its imaging features can mimic lymphoma in appearance, thus requiring additional invasive procedures. Lack of restricted diffusion may be helpful in distinguishing imaging feature of reactive lymph nodes with caseating necrosis seen in cat scratch disease from lymphoma or abscess. We present a case of 12-year-old female, who presented with an arm swelling, MRI of which demonstrated absence of restricted diffusion in the subcutaneous enlarged lymph nodes. She then underwent excisional biopsy with final diagnosis of reactive lymph node and cat scratch disease based on biopsy results and immunoglobulin titer.Artery dissection during embolization of an intracranial aneurysm is not a frequent complication. In most cases, the tactics of treatment are limited to the appointment of anticoagulants or balloon angioplasty. We present a clinical case of successful treatment of a woman of 47 years. Dissection of the internal carotid artery occurred during aneurysm embolization in the acute period of subarachnoid hemorrhage and required coronary stent implantation. The absence in the long-term period of signs of restenosis or mechanical damage to the coronary stent in the installed position indicates the possibility of implanting it in the indicated position in urgent situations. The clinical significance of the described case consists in combining sequentially rarely occurring events one after another. The number of cases of superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) increased due to increased cardiac devices and central venous catheters. Management of benign SVCS is still controversial. A 51-year-old male known to have ischemic cardiomyopathy and chronic renal failure on regular hemodialysis. In the last 12 months, he had progressive shortness of breath and swelling of his upper part of the body. Examination revealed engorgement of the neck veins, facial puffiness, and pitting edema of both upper limbs. Venography showed occluded SVC. We applied a 50 Watt of energy via electrocautery pen to a Hi-Torque 0.014 Astato guidewire to cross the occluded segment retrogradely. We used 2 stents 39 mm, mounted on BIB 20/40 mm. Final angiography revealed full restoration of SVC flow. Diathermy use to cross a chronic total SVC obstruction is feasible and safe. Endovascular techniques are suitable as initial management of benign SVC syndrome.[This corrects the article DOI 10.1016/j.radcr.2020.02.028.].Secondary spontaneous pneumothorax is a serious medical condition that typically occurs in patients with an underlying lung pathology such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. link3 Those patients are usually compromised and more amenable to higher morbidity and mortality rates. Moreover, they are poor candidates for general anesthesia and mechanical ventilation due to their poor health condition. We report a case of an 86-year-old male, who presented with a non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction and was incidentally found to have secondary spontaneous pneumothorax on a routine chest x-ray. The results of his blood work, international normalized ratio and liver function test were abnormal. Therefore, a novel intervention was introduced to control the air-leak by injecting a sealant material (Progel™, Warwick, Rhode Island, USA) through a thoracostomy tube guided by computed tomography fluoroscopy. The procedure was demonstrated to be a successful method of air-leak repair with minimal complications; as the patient was followed for two and a half years without any evidence of recurrence.
