This study estimated the effect of the adoption of soil and water conservation (SWC) on the productivity of 360 smallholder rice farmers in Southwest Nigeria. An endogenous switching regression model (ESRM) was employed to estimate the productivities of adopter and non-adopters of SWC. A doubly robust inverse-probability-weighted regression adjustment (IPWRA) was used as a credible remedy for potentially biased estimates of average treatment on the treated (ATT) and potential outcome mean (POM) of the endogenous treatment model. Significant variables, such as farmers' locations, gender, marital status, annual temperature, annual precipitation, log of fertiliser and membership in farm-based organisation (FBO), were factors influencing the adoption of SWC among smallholder rice farmers. Factors such as age, marital status, rice experience, farm size, formal education, access to extension and labour in man-days significantly influenced the rice productivity of smallholder farmers who adopted SWC technology, while location, marital status, rice experience, farm size, formal education, access to extension and labour in man-days were the determinants of rice productivity among smallholder farmers who did not adopt SWC technology. The result from the inverse-probability-weighted regression adjustment estimation indicates that the adoption of SWC technology to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change improves the productivity of rice in the study area. To ensure effective dissemination and the adoption of new conservation technologies, government and stakeholders in rice production could take the lead in promotion and dissemination in the initial stages and, in the process, create an enabling environment for the effective participation of other stakeholders in rice production.Recycling of wastewater provides a substantial solution to the global issue of water scarcity and high water use in aquaculture. However, this sustainable way of wastewater use has not been given much attention and exploration. This study focused on the consumer preference for fish grown in treated wastewater as well as the effect of aeration on the growth performance and economic benefit of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) grown in treated wastewater. Two hundred (200) respondents from two communities (Chirapatre and Gyinyase) near the wastewater treatment plant in Kumasi were interviewed to determine their willingness to accept and pay for African catfish grown in treated wastewater. For the growth trial, a total of 600 fish (of average initial weight 39.12g) were stocked in two maturation ponds with 4 h (300am-700am) of aeration daily. The trial lasted for 12 weeks and variables monitored included the survival, growth performance (weight gain, specific growth rate, and yield) and water quality. Fish cuwhich was incurred in the non-aerated ponds. Education of the consumers on the process of wastewater treatment and establishment of food safety guidelines will therefore be recommended to increase consumer interest in consuming fish from the treated wastewater.

Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) is a collective term for various subgroups of glaucoma of which primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PEG) are the most common. There is increasing evidence that both conditions have systemic ramifications. We wanted to examine to what extent lifespan and cause of death are influenced by POAG, pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES), and PEG.

Of 1864 people who underwent an eye examination in 1985-86, the presence of PES and/or glaucoma, along with date and cause of death were recorded. Based on information from the National Death Registry, the individuals were classified into the following groups of systemic diseases regarded as causing death Cardiovascular disease (with two subgroups), cerebrovascular disease and neoplasms.

All 1864 persons were followed to death, up to 30 years after examination. No difference in lifespan was observed when comparing OAG (i.e. POAG and PEG together) with the rest of the population. When adjusting for gender and age at inclusion, patients with POAG showed a reduced lifespan in the cardiovascular death group (2.44 years, p = 0.043). When comparing lifespan in the neoplastic group in the glaucoma patients, POAG and PEG, directly against each other, a mean age difference of 6.87 years (p = 0.017) was found.

POAG patients showed reduced lifespan due to neoplasia and cardiovascular disease. Persons with PES and PEG did not show these lifespan reductions. Our main conclusion is that POAG and PEG, the two main OAG subgroups, are very different disease entities both from an ocular and a systemic point of view.

Here, we describe a 74-year-old male patient with NMOSD who presented with recurrent syncope due to severe orthostatic hypotension (OH) following symptoms of hiccups, nausea and vomiting. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed the lesion of the area postraema and it could be responsible for the symptom of OH. Considering the numerous related reports, we suspect that the prevalence of OH is underreported in the patients with NMOSD. OH may transition into more serious conditions, so it should be evaluated carefully in all patients with NMOSD, particularly when there is a lesion of the area postraema.Although thalidomide is highly teratogenic, it has been prescribed for treating multiple myeloma and Hansen's disease. However, its mechanism of action is not fully understood. Here, we employed a reverse transcription quantitative PCR array to measure the expression of 84 genes in human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and their mesodermal differentiation. Nanvuranlat nmr Thalidomide altered the expression of undifferentiated marker genes in both cell types. Thalidomide affected more genes in the mesoderm than in the hiPSCs. Ectoderm genes were upregulated but mesendoderm genes were downregulated by thalidomide during mesoderm induction, suggesting that thalidomide altered mesoderm differentiation. We found that FABP7 (fatty acid binding protein 7) was dramatically downregulated in the hiPSCs. FABP is related to retinoic acid, which is important signaling for limb formation. Moreover, thalidomide altered the expression of the genes involved in TGF-β signaling, limb formation, and multiple myeloma, which are related to thalidomide-induced malformations and medication. In summary, iPSCs can serve as useful tools to elucidate the mechanisms underlying thalidomide malformations in vitro.Quantum dots (QDs) are nanocrystals of semiconducting material possessing quantum mechanical characteristics with capability to get conjugated with drug moieties. The particle size of QDs varies from 2 to 10 nm and can radiate a wide range of colours depending upon their size. Their wide and diverse usage of QDs across the world is due to their adaptable properties like large quantum yield, photostability, and adjustable emission spectrum. link2 QDs are nanomaterials with inherent electrical characteristics that can be used as drug carrier vehicle and as a diagnostic in the field of nanomedicine. Scientists from various fields are aggressively working for the development of single platform that can sense, can produce a microscopic image and even be used to deliver a therapeutic agent. QDs are the fluorescent nano dots with which the possibilities of the drug delivery to a targeted site and its biomedical imaging can be explored. This review is mainly focused on the different process of synthesis of QDs, their application especially in the areas of malignancies and as a theranostic tool. The attempt is to consolidate the data available for the use of QDs in the biomedical applications.Mammalian cells process information through coordinated spatiotemporal regulation of proteins. Engineering cellular networks thus relies on efficient tools for regulating protein levels in specific subcellular compartments. To address the need to manipulate the extent and dynamics of protein localization, we developed a platform technology for the target-specific control of protein destination. This platform is based on bifunctional molecules comprising a target-specific nanobody and universal sequences determining target subcellular localization or degradation rate. We demonstrate that nanobody-mediated localization depends on the expression level of the target and the nanobody, and the extent of target subcellular localization can be regulated by combining multiple target-specific nanobodies with distinct localization or degradation sequences. We also show that this platform for nanobody-mediated target localization and degradation can be regulated transcriptionally and integrated within orthogonal genetic circuits to achieve the desired temporal control over spatial regulation of target proteins. The platform reported in this study provides an innovative tool to control protein subcellular localization, which will be useful to investigate protein function and regulate large synthetic gene circuits.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinicopathological features and the treatment of the Burkitt-like lymphoma with 11q aberration.

We reported two patients with Burkitt-like lymphoma with 11q aberration a 56-year-old man with AIDS (case 1) and a 37-year-old woman (case 2) without AIDS. The biopsy of cervical lymph nodes showed Burkitt-like morphologic and immunophenotypic features. But both of them lack MYC rearrangement and carry an 11q-arm aberration with proximal gains and/or telomeric losses. The diagnosis was confirmed by pathological morphology, immunohistochemistry, and fluorescence

hybridization.

After a cycle of R-CTOEP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, pirarubicin, vincristine, and prednisone) chemotherapy, case 1 refused to chemotherapy and radiotherapy and was followed up for 34 months without recurrence and new focus. Case 2 received R-CHOP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone) for two cycles and achieved PR (partial response). Then, the patient in case 2 received EPOCH (etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, and doxorubicin) for three cycles, and the right cervical mass disappeared. She achieved complete response and was followed up for 16 months without recurrence and new focus.

Burkitt-like lymphoma with 11q abnormalities resembles Burkitt lymphoma morphologically but lacks MYC rearrangement and may have a better prognosis.
