Growing rates of e-cigarette use among youth have reached epidemic proportions. Media messages have been deployed to counteract this trend, but their evaluations are lacking. We assessed youth's and parents' reactions to various existing e-cigarette prevention messages.
In 2019, 12 focus groups were conducted with youth (n=63) and parents (n=27). Participants discussed their reactions to 9 existing messages with various topics.
Information on chemicals in e-cigarettes was seen as new and scary, but unknown chemical names created confusion. Youth appreciated novel ways to visualize health effects of e-cigarettes (parasites in the body) and nicotine's effect on behavior (mood swings), but they cautioned that some of these effects (irritability) are not always caused by nicotine. Some participants did not know if e-cigarette companies were "Big Tobacco." Some found it hard to argue with the financial costs of vaping, but others did not think they were too great. Participants recommended messages featuring testimonials from diverse adolescents and messages aimed at youth who are struggling with addiction to e-cigarettes.
Messages would be particularly effective if they featured real youth and did not look like adults created them for youth. Another area that is currently not covered in media messages is talking to youth who are using e-cigarettes and might be already addicted but do not know where to turn for help. These adolescents need to be referred to resources for cessation.

To investigate the relationship between TNFA-308G>A, IL10-1082A>G, IL18-607C>A, and cognitive functioning in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS).
In the patients' group AG genotype of TNFA-308G>A was associated with higher serum tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) than GG genotype, and higher TNF-alpha levels correlated with poorer results on Symbol Digit Modalities Test; CC genotype of IL18-607C>A was related to lower score on Isaacs test, compared to AC variant; AA genotype of IL10-1082A>G was associated with abnormally low results on Paced Auditory Series Addition Test.

In this work, we suggest that CSF kappa free light chains (KFLC) determination at first relapse may provide insight into future disease activity and disability worsening. We quantified KFLC by nephelometry in paired CSF/serum samples of 28 patients, collected within one month of first-ever MS relapse, and explored correlations with clinical data on disease activity, retrospectively registered across a median follow-up time of 79 months. We documented KFLC ratio (CSF-FKLC/Serum-KFLC) as an independent predictor of second relapse occurrence and disability worsening at follow-up, in this cohort.Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMP) and Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-β) are cytokines with similar receptors and messengers. They are important for immune cell function, with BMPs exerting mainly proinflammatory but also anti-inflammatory effects, and TGF-β suppressing inflammation. Patients with Multiple Sclerosis exhibit BMP overactivity and suppressed TGF-β signaling. This dysregulated signaling participates in the crosstalk between infiltrating immune cells and glia, where BMP inhibits remyelination. Reciprocal antagonism between the two pathways takes place via a variety of mechanisms. Aβ42 aggregation and fibrillation are very complex processes whose molecular mechanisms seem to depend on characteristics intrinsic to the peptide molecule, as well as extrinsic factors. Peptide concentration, mean pH and several substances, including metal ions, are principal extrinsic factors for the oligomerization process. Different metals affect the aggregation of the Aβ42 molecule, and their toxicity favours the misfolding and aggregation of the peptide. In this study, we evaluate the effect of different concentrations of Cd2+ and Hg2+ on the Aβ42 peptide in solution by different methods. selleck The toxicity of Aβ42 was evaluated with the MTT assay, while the aggregation process was monitored by single-channel measurements, electrophoresis and western blot. Cd2+ and Hg2+ seem to favour the formation of high-molecular-weight aggregates, to decrease ion channel turnover inside the membrane and to significantly increase Aβ42 toxicity.
