Data from the longitudinal Zurich Project on the Social Development from Childhood to Adulthood (z-proso) were used to address this question. Students completed self-report surveys at three time points; ages 11 (n = 1144; 51% males, 49% females), age 13 (n = 1366; 51% males, 49% females) and age 15 (n = 1447, 52% males and 48% females). An autoregressive cross-lagged panel model was used to examine self-control as a protective factor with both a direct effect and as a moderator of the links between corporal punishment and adolescent aggression across time. The results indicated that self-control was a protective factor against concurrent aggression. However, when considering the longitudinal effects, the protective capabilities of self-control differed depending on the stage of adolescence, gender and levels of exposure to risk. There was no consistent moderating effect of self-control. However, findings suggest that interventions that address low self-control are likely to be beneficial due to their direct effects on aggression, rather than by weakening the effects of exposure to harsh punishment.Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common mood disorder that affects almost 20% of the global population. In addition, much evidence has implicated altered function of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAergic) system in the pathophysiology of depression. Recent research has indicated that GABAB receptors (GABABRs) are an emerging therapeutic target in the treatment of stress-related disorders such as MDD. However, which cell types with GABABRs are involved in this process is unknown. As hippocampal dysfunction is implicated in MDD, we knocked down GABABRs in the hippocampus and found that knocking down these receptors in astrocytes, but not in GABAergic or pyramidal neurons, caused a decrease in immobility in the forced swimming test (FST) without affecting other anxiety- and depression-related behaviors. We also generated astrocyte-specific GABABR-knockout mice and found decreased immobility in the FST in these mice. Furthermore, the conditional knockout of GABABRs in astrocytes selectively increased the levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor protein in hippocampal astrocytes, which controlled the decrease in immobility in the FST. Taken together, our findings contribute to the current understanding of which cell types expressing GABABRs modulate antidepressant activity in the FST, and they may provide new insights into the pathological mechanisms and potential targets for the treatment of depression.BACKGROUND Vancomycin empiric therapy is commonly dosed using clinical algorithms adapted from population-predicted pharmacokinetic parameters. However, precise dosing of vancomycin can be designed using patient-specific pharmacokinetic calculations. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to assess the correlational fit between vancomycin population-predicted and patient-specific pharmacokinetic parameters [elimination rate constant (Ke) and half-life (t1/2)] in a case series of adult hospitalized patients. METHODS This is a single-center case series of hospitalized adult patients who received vancomycin, had creatinine clearance calculation for derivation of population-predicted pharmacokinetic parameters, and had two vancomycin concentrations for calculation of patient-specific pharmacokinetic parameters. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of timbre, age, and sensory modality (visual and tactile) on the consistency and congruency of young children's patterns of crossmodal mappings. Preschool children (N = 69, M age = 4.51) completed a novel audio-visual and audio-tactile association task. Results indicate that children are moderately consistent in their associations; mappings are largely congruent with adult associations; and results suggest a possible developmental time course for the establishment of crossmodal correspondences between approximately ages 3 and 6.
