Leishmaniases are neglected diseases that can be treated with a limited drug arsenal; the development of new molecules is therefore a priority. Recent evidence indicates that endoperoxides, including artemisinin and its derivatives, possess antileishmanial activity. Here, 1,2-dioxanes were synthesized with their corresponding tetrahydropyrans lacking the peroxide bridge, to ascertain if this group is a key pharmacophoric requirement for the antileishmanial bioactivity. Newly synthesized compounds were examined in vitro, and their mechanism of action was preliminarily investigated. Three endoperoxides and their corresponding tetrahydropyrans effectively inhibited the growth of Leishmania donovani promastigotes and amastigotes, and iron did not play a significant role in their activation. Further, reactive oxygen species were produced in both endoperoxide- and tetrahydropyran-treated promastigotes. In conclusion, the peroxide group proved not to be crucial for the antileishmanial bioactivity of endoperoxides, under the tested conditions. Our findings reveal the potential of both 1,2-dioxanes and tetrahydropyrans as lead compounds for novel therapies against Leishmania.Targeted analysis of data-independent acquisition (DIA) mass spectrometry data requires elegant software tools and strict statistical control. OpenSWATH-PyProphet-TRIC is a widely used DIA data analysis workflow. The OpenSWATH-PyProphet-TRIC workflow is typically executed by running command lines. Here, we present QuantPipe, which is a graphic interface software tool based on the OpenSWATH-PyProphet-TRIC workflow. In addition to OpenSWATH-PyProphet-TRIC functions, QuantPipe can convert the spectral library to the assay library and output peptides and protein intensities. We demonstrated that QuantPipe can be used to analyze SWATH-MS data from TripleTOF 5600 and TripleTOF 6600, phospho-SWATH-MS data, DIA data from Orbitrap instrument, and diaPASEF data from TimsTOF Pro instrument. However, the negative differential resistance (NDR) demonstrated in this class of tunnel diodes often exhibits noisy behavior with low peak current density and lacks robustness and repeatability, limiting their practical circuit applications. Here, we propose a strategy of using a 1L-WS2 as an optimum tunnel barrier sandwiched in a broken gap tunnel junction of highly doped black phosphorus (BP) and SnSe2. We achieve high yield tunnel diodes exhibiting highly repeatable, ultraclean, and gate-tunable NDR characteristics with a signature of intrinsic oscillation, and a large peak-to-valley current ratio (PVCR) of 3.6 at 300 K (4.6 at 7 K), making them suitable for practical applications. We show that the thermodynamic stability of the vdW tunnel diode circuit can be tuned from astability to bistability by altering the constraint through choosing a voltage or a current bias, respectively. In the astable mode under voltage bias, we demonstrate a compact, voltage-controlled oscillator without the need for an external tank circuit. In the bistable mode under current bias, we demonstrate a highly scalable, single-element, one-bit memory cell that is promising for dense random access memory applications in memory intensive computation architectures.
Recent studies have raised concerns that fluoroquinolone use is associated with an increased risk of aortopathy, including aortic aneurysm with and without dissection.
We performed a meta-analysis with a comprehensive literature review to further investigate this association.
This analysis was conducted per PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials.gov, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for studies that included adult patients (age >18 years) exposed to fluoroquinolones or control antibiotics (amoxicillin/any other antibiotic) for urinary tract infection or pneumonia with a primary outcome of aortic aneurysm or dissection. link2 Heterogeneity was calculated using Q statistic I
.
A total of 6 studies-comprised of 59% males-were included in our analysis, which showed an increased combined risk of development of aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection with quinolone exposure when compared with controls (relative risk [RR] = 2.11; 95% CI, 1.62 - 2.75; I
= 83.700). link3 Individual relative risk for aortic aneurysm (RR = 2.83; 95% CI, 2.02 - 3.95, I
= 89.150) and aortic dissection (RR = 1.99; 95% CI, 1.23 - 3.06; I2
= 71.33) also were significantly increased.
Compared to other antibiotics, the use of fluoroquinolones was associated with a significantly higher risk of aortic aneurysm and dissection combined.

While most patients note a complete resolution of facial paralysis in Bell's Palsy, up to 30% will have persistent facial weakness and develop synkinesis. All branches of the facial nerve are at risk for developing synkinesis, but stapedial synkinesis has rarely been reported in the literature.
A 45-year-old man presented with sudden onset, complete right facial paralysis. One-and-a-half years later, he had persistent facial weakness and synkinesis. He noted persistent right aural fullness and hearing loss. Audiometry demonstrated facial-stapedial synkinesis.
The patient was diagnosed with stapedial synkinesis based on audiometric findings by comparing his hearing at rest and with sustained facial mimetic movement. A literature review revealed 21 reported cases of this disorder.
Facial-stapedial synkinesis is an underdiagnosed phenomenon for patients recovering from idiopathic facial palsy. Patients who develop facial synkinesis also may have a component of stapedial synkinesis and should be referred to an otolaryngologist if they complain of any otologic symptoms, such as unilateral hearing loss or tinnitus. Definitive management involves surgical transection of the stapedial tendon.

Consistent and concise communication in a large health care organization that is geographically dispersed is a challenge. Issues often are not addressed with the appropriate individuals in the most timely and effective manner, which results in patient flow disruptions, service gaps, and provider and administrator frustration.
This report describes the development of a daily leadership huddle with regional leadership and middle management to inform of daily operations, safety, quality, and service concerns, in order to allow for quicker action and issue resolution.
Huddles have proven effective in organizations of similar size, but few organizations have attempted a multisite daily huddle.
To ensure their success, key steps must be taken during the formation of daily leadership huddles, including buy-in from leaders and stakeholders at multiple levels. In our organization, the huddles have proven to be a forum for effective communication, quicker issue resolution, and an increased sense of camaraderie.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many practices to completely change the interface between health care providers and patients. Patients presenting with facial trauma present a special risk for COVID-19 transmission, as contact with respiratory and ocular secretions is common, and so special precautions must be taken in managing them.
We created guidelines and a triage/management algorithm for patients presenting with facial trauma to decrease the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
In this paper, we present a set of guidelines and a triage algorithm we have successfully implemented to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 while managing facial trauma. We believe that these guidelines can help other providers restructure their practices during this pandemic.

Several studies describing Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been reported; however, to our knowledge, no case series has been published from the Midwest.
To describe demographic characteristics and outcomes of patients admitted with COVID-19 to a Wisconsin academic medical center.
We performed a retrospective analysis of data obtained for COVID-19 patients admitted from March 14, 2020, through April 19, 2020.
One hundred sixty-eight patients were admitted. Outcomes measured include time in the intensive care unit (53%), mechanical ventilation (18%), and death (19%). ICU patients had higher rates of diabetes, obesity, and higher inflammatory markers. The majority of patients admitted were African American (68%).
This case series highlights demographic similarities and differences, as well as outcomes, among COVID-19 patients in a Wisconsin Academic Medical Center compared to those reported in other geographic regions.

The rising demand on primary care providers encourages innovative use of care extenders, such as primary care pharmacists. Our academic medical center includes 34 multidisciplinary primary care clinics that provide general pediatric and adolescent medicine, internal medicine, and family medicine services. Primary care pharmacy services (PCPS) have grown since 2016 across 13 clinics serving internal and family medicine services. This study evaluated care team member satisfaction and workflow implications with current PCPS and systematically identified priorities for future expanded services.
A 15-question survey was developed and administered through an online platform targeting multidisciplinary care team members. Likert and ranked scale responses were averaged by the electronic survey platform to calculate overall composite scores or weighted averages for each question.
The survey response rate was 24.7%. There was a high level of agreement among care team members about the satisfaction with currently provided PCPS (range 3-5; mean 4.
