Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising tumor therapy which utilizes reactive oxygen species (ROSs) to cause tumor cells death. 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and two of its esters are FDA-approved photosensitizers. However, their clinical application suffers from their instability and lack of tumor selectivity. In addition, the overexpression of glutathione (GSH) in some tumor cells reduces the PDT efficiency due to the ROS-scavenging ability of GSH. In this work, we present three multifunctional ALA derivates with the characteristics of dual-targeting and GSH depletion to improve the therapeutic effect of ALA-based PDT. The general structure of these compounds consists of an ALA methyl ester (ALA-OMe) moiety that can metabolize to photosensitive protoporphyin IX (PpIX) inside the cells, a biotin group for targeting biotin receptor-positive tumor cells and a disulfide bond-based self-immolative linker which can be activated by GSH to liberate ALA-OMe. Simultaneously, the reaction between the disulfide bond angher tumor-specificity and better therapeutic effects.Acoustically-responsive scaffolds (ARSs), which are fibrin hydrogels containing monodispersed perfluorocarbon (PFC) emulsions, respond to ultrasound in an on-demand, spatiotemporally-controlled manner via a mechanism termed acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV). Previously, ADV has been used to control the release of bioactive payloads from ARSs to stimulate regenerative processes. In this study, we used classical nucleation theory (CNT) to predict the nucleation pressure in emulsions of different PFC cores as well as the corresponding condensation pressure of the ADV-generated bubbles. According to CNT, the threshold bubble radii above which ADV-generated bubbles remain stable against condensation were 0.4 µm and 5.2 µm for perfluoropentane (PFP) and perfluorohexane (PFH) bubbles, respectively, while ADV-generated bubbles of any size in perfluorooctane (PFO) condense back to liquid at ambient condition. Additionally, consistent with the CNT findings, stable bubble formation from PFH emulsion was experimentally observed using confocal imaging while PFO emulsion likely underwent repeated vaporization and recondensation during ultrasound pulses. In further experimental studies, we utilized this unique feature of ADV in generating stable or transient bubbles, through tailoring the PFC core and ultrasound parameters (excitation frequency and pulse duration), for sequential delivery of two payloads from PFC emulsions in ARSs. ADV-generated stable bubbles from PFH correlated with complete release of the payload while transient ADV resulted in partial release, where the amount of payload release increased with the number of ultrasound exposure. Overall, these results can be used in developing drug delivery strategies using ARSs.An increasing number of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections in industrialized countries have been foodborne and linked to the consumption of undercooked pork products. To date, data on the prevalence of HEV in pork products sold in the United States is limited and no standard processing method exists for the detection of HEV in foods. In order to develop a processing method for the detection of HEV in pork products, ground pork and pork liver were selected for method development. Murine norovirus (MNV) was used as a process control. A filtration step prior to RNA detection was shown to reduce the level of PCR inhibitors in ground pork and an additional ultracentrifugation process was successful in removing PCR inhibitors in pork liver. MNV RNA was detected in ground pork and liver samples inoculated with 4.7 log10 PFU/g and 3.0 log10 PFU/g, respectively. Using the developed method for viral RNA detection in ground pork and pork liver, 20 packages of ground pork (six 1 g sub-samples per package) and 14 pork livers (four 1 g sub-samples per liver) were screened for the presence of HEV RNA. Fifteen out of 119 (12.6%) ground pork samples tested positive for HEV RNA and 13 out of 20 packages (65%) contained at least one positive sample. Twenty-five of 56 (45%) of pork liver samples were positive for HEV RNA and 6 of 14 livers (43%) had all sub-samples test positive for HEV RNA. Overall, the results indicate ground pork and pig liver as a potential source of HEV.Diabetic brain is a serious complication of diabetes, and it is associated with oxidative stress and neuronal injury. This study investigated the protective effect of melatonin (MLT) on diabetes-induced brain injury. A rat model of type 2 diabetes mellitus was produced by intraperitoneal injection of nicotinamide 100 mg/kg, followed by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin 55 mg/kg. The diabetic rats were orally administered MLT 10 mg/kg of body weight for 15 days. MLT remarkably downregulated serum glucose levels. It also improved levels of the lipid peroxidation product 4-hydroxynonenal, improved levels of antioxidants including glutathione, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase in the brains of the diabetic rats, and this is indicative of the antioxidant potential of MLT. MLT also prevented increase in homocysteine, amyloid-β42 and tau levels in diabetic rats, and this suggests that it can reduce the risk of dementia. This is associated with reduction in the levels of the dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate and is indicative of the regulatory effect of MLT on neurotransmitters. Treatment with MLT improved diabetes-induced structural alteration in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex. MLT significantly reduced caspase-3 and Bax as well as significantly increase Bcl-2 protein and GFAP-positive astrocytes indicating its anti-apoptotic effect. MLT showed remarkable ameliorative effect against biochemical and molecular alterations in the brains of diabetic rats most likely through its antioxidant property.Over the past two decades, the study of moral reasoning has been heavily influenced by Joshua Greene's dual-process model of moral judgment, according to which deontological judgments are typically supported by intuitive, automatic processes while utilitarian judgments are typically supported by reflective, conscious processes. However, most of the evidence gathered in support of this model comes from the study of people's judgments about sacrificial dilemmas, such as Trolley Problems. To which extent does this model generalize to other debates in which deontological and utilitarian judgments conflict, such as the existence of harmless moral violations, the difference between actions and omissions, the extent of our duties of assistance, and the appropriate justification for punishment? To find out, we conducted a series of five studies on the role of reflection in these kinds of moral conundrums. In Study 1, participants were asked to answer under cognitive load. In Study 2, participants had to answer under a strict time constraint. In Studies 3 to 5, we sought to promote reflection through exposure to counter-intuitive reasoning problems or direct instruction. Overall, our results offer strong support to the extension of Greene's dual-process model to moral debates on the existence of harmless violations and partial support to its extension to moral debates on the extent of our duties of assistance.

The qualitative description study comprised of two phases a secondary data analysis of interviews with 14 PSP clients, and key informant interviews with four PSP providers.
The interviews were thematically analysed which resulted in three interconnected themes Attachment, Support and Social Isolation. Social isolation was reduced by the PSP through access to social support groups, as well as the provision of a regular visitor who provides meaningful conversation and companionship.
These results align with literature on pet ownership and Attachment Theory. The results also offer an insight into how PSPs allow the elderly to maintain pet ownership and age in place, thus enhancing their health and well-being.

Nevertheless, the procedures still need optimization to be translated to the industrial scale. Such translation would benefit by on-line monitoring of reaction parameters by fast, inexpensive, direct spectroscopic techniques. In this work, we propose the application of FT-NIR spectroscopy as a suitable analytical tool for monitoring the chemocatalytic conversion of cellulose into lactic acid. Comparison between different FT-NIR spectra at different reaction temperatures and times was exploited to qualitatively indicate the feasibility of the reaction. Besides, an FT-NIR prediction model was proposed for rapidly estimating the molar distribution of cellulose catalytic degradation components in the reaction mixtures. The calibration model was based on reference samples analysed by HPLC. The model was validated by an external validation set. Relevant statistical values of Ratio Performance to Deviations (RPD) referred to both calibration and external validation were obtained, thus demonstrating the potential of such analytical technique in process monitoring.Blood serum samples from 63 cervical cancer patients and 30 controls were collected at three different phases of the treatment (i.e. before, during, and at follow up). The spectra of serum samples from control as well as patients were classified into different groups using principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) based on different phases of treatment using R software. The spectra of blood serum samples have shown the distinct changes and differences compared with each other in the profile of various biochemical parameters. The sensitivity (92.5%) and specificity (85%) were observed maximum between control and cervical cancer patients (before treatment). Between different phases of treatment, the sensitivity and specificity were less but, all accuracies of detection and classification reached above 50%. To reveal primary events of photoconversion, we implemented femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy with a homemade LED box and a miniature peristaltic pump flow cell to track transient electronic responses of the photoexcited AnPixJg2 on molecular time scales. The 525 nm laser-induced Pg-to-Pr reverse conversion exhibits a ~3 ps excited-state lifetime before reaching the conical intersection (CI) and undergoing further relaxation on the 30 ps time scale to generate a long-lived Lumi-G ground state intermediate en route to Pr. The 650 nm laser-induced Pr-to-Pg forward conversion is less efficient than reverse conversion, showing a longer-lived excited state which requires two steps with ~13 and 217 ps time constants to enter the CI region.
