The polyoxometalates with designable size and redox property enable the flexible regulation of interaction between the nanotubes and the clusters, thus tuning the diameter of sorted s-SWCNTs. The present sorting strategy is simple and should be generally feasible in other SWCNT sorting techniques, bringing both great easiness in dispersant design and improved selectivity.Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen that causes severe infections in immunocompromised patients. The emergence of multi- and pan-drug resistant strains of A. baumannii from clinical sources has confounded treatment and enhanced morbidity and mortality associated with these infections. One way that A. NCB-0846 ic50 baumannii circumnavigates environmental and antimicrobial challenge is by forming tertiary architectural structures of cells known as biofilms. Biofilm-inhibiting molecules could be deployed as a potential chemotherapeutic strategy to inhibit or disrupt A. baumannii biofilms and mitigate adverse outcomes due to infection. Lactoferrin is an innate immune glycoprotein produced in high concentrations in both human and bovine milk which has previously been shown to have antibacterial and antibiofilm activities. We sought to test lactoferrin against a bank of clinical isolates of A. baumannii to determine changes in bacterial growth or biofilm formation. Our results indicate that human lactoferrin has slightly more potent antibacterial activities than bovine lactoferrin against certain strains of A. baumannii and that these effects are associated with anatomical site of isolation. Additionally, we have shown that both bovine and human lactoferrin can inhibit A. baumannii biofilm formation and that these effects are associated with anatomical site of isolation and whether the strain forms robust or weak biofilms.A strongly stratified water structure and a densely populated catchment make the Baltic Sea one of the most polluted seas. Understanding its circulation pattern and time scale is essential to predict the dynamics of hypoxia, eutrophication, and pollutants. Anthropogenic 236U and 233U have been demonstrated as excellent transient tracers in oceanic studies, but unclear input history and inadequate long-term monitoring records limit their application in the Baltic Sea. From two dated Baltic sediment cores, we obtained high-resolution records of anthropogenic uranium imprints originating from three major human nuclear activities throughout the Atomic Era. Using the novel 233U/236U signature, we distinguished and quantified 236U inputs from global fallout (45.4-52.1%), Chernobyl accident (0.3-1.8%), and discharges from civil nuclear industries (46.1-54.3%) to the Baltic Sea. We estimated the total release of 233U (7-15 kg) from the atmospheric nuclear weapon testing and pinpointed the 233U peak signal in the mid-to-late 1950s as a potential time marker for the onset of the Anthropocene Epoch. This work also provides fundamental 236U data on Chernobyl accident and early discharges from civil nuclear facilities, prompting worldwide 233U-236U tracer studies. We anticipate our data to be used in a broader application in model-observation interdisciplinary research on water circulation and pollutant dynamics in the Baltic Sea.Nicotine vaccines have been investigated to assist with smoking cessation. Because smoking cessation is a long process, past nicotine vaccines required multiple injections to achieve long-term efficacy. It would be of great significance if extended efficacy can be achieved with fewer injections. Here, we report the assembly of lipid-polylactic acid (PLA) and lipid-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) hybrid nanoparticle (NP) based nicotine vaccines. Mice immunized with the lipid-PLGA vaccine produced higher titers of nicotine-specific antibodies than the lipid-PLA vaccine in short-term. However, the lipid-PLA vaccine was found to induce long-lasting antibodies. Three months after the immunization, only mice that received first two injections of the lipid-PLGA vaccine and a third injection of the lipid-PLA vaccine achieved a significantly lower brain nicotine concentration of 65.13 ± 20.59 ng/mg than 115.88 ± 37.62 ng/mg from the negative controls. The results indicate that not only the stability of the vaccines but also the combination of the vaccines impacted the long-term efficacy of the immunization. Lastly, both the body weight and the histopathology study suggest that the vaccines were safe to mice. These findings suggest that long-term immunity against nicotine can be realized by a rational administration of nanovaccines of different levels of stability.Particulate matter is a large concern for human health. Fine and ultrafine particulate matter has been shown to negatively impact human health; for example, it causes cardiopulmonary diseases. Current regulation targets the size of the particles, but composition also impacts toxicity. Indoor sources of air pollution pose unique challenges for human health due to the potential for human exposure to high concentrations in confined spaces. In this work, six hairdryers were each operated within a plexiglass chamber, and their emissions were analyzed with transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. All hairdryers were found to emit ultrafine iron, carbon, and copper. In addition, emissions from two hairdryers primarily contained silver nanoparticles in the ultrafine range ( less then 100 nm). The ultrafine particle emission rates for the hairdryers that did not contain silver were measured and found to be lower than ultrafine particle emissions by gas stoves and electric burners. Based on their size, these particles can either remain in the lung or enter the bloodstream after inhalation and potentially cause long-term health effects.Artificial membranes, as materials with biomimetic properties, can be applied in various fields, such as drug screening or bio-sensing. The solvent-assisted method (SA) represents a straightforward method to prepare lipid solid-supported membranes. It overcomes the main limitations of established membrane preparation methods, such as Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) or vesicle fusion. However, it has not yet been applied to create artificial membranes based on amphiphilic block copolymers, despite their enhanced mechanical stability compared to lipid-based membranes and bio-compatible properties. Here, we applied the SA method on different amphiphilic di- and triblock poly(dimethylsiloxane)-block-poly(2-methyl-2-oxazoline) (PDMS-b-PMOXA) copolymers and optimized the conditions to prepare artificial membranes on a solid support. The real-time membrane formation, the morphology, and the mechanical properties have been evaluated by a combination of atomic force microscopy and quartz crystal microbalance. Then, selected biomolecules including complementary DNA strands and an artificial deallylase metalloenzyme (ADAse) were incorporated into these membranes relying on the biotin-streptavidin technology.
