Identifying the characteristics of white matter plays an important role in research as well as in clinical practice that relies on finding the relationship between the structure and function of the brain. An Ising model implemented on a structural connectivity (SC) has proven to explain the spontaneous fluctuations in the brain at criticality using brain's structure depicted by white matter tracts. Since the SC is the only input of the model, identifying the tractography technique which provides a SC that delivers the highest prediction of the brain's intrinsic activity via the generalized Ising model (GIM) is essential. Hence an Ising model is simulated on SCs generated using two different acquisition schemes (single and multi-shell) and two different tractography approaches (deterministic and probabilistic) and analyzed at criticality across 69 healthy subjects. Results showed that by introducing the GIM, predictability of the empirical correlation matrix increases on average from 0.2 to 0.6 compared to the predictability using the empirical connectivity matrix directly. It is also observed that the SC generated using deterministic tractography without fractional anisotropy resulted in the highest correlation coefficient value of 0.65 between the simulated and empirical correlation matrices. Additionally, calculated dimensionalities per simulation illustrated that the dimensionality depends upon the method of tractography that has been used to extract the SC.

Improving the safety of general wards is a key to reducing serious adverse events in the postoperative period. We investigated the characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of postoperative patients managed by a rapid response system (RRS) in Japan to improve postoperative management.

This retrospective study analyzed cases requiring RRS intervention that were included in the In-Hospital Emergency Registry in Japan. We analyzed data reported by 34 Japanese hospitals between January 2014 and March 2018, mainly focusing on postoperative patients for whom the RRS was activated within 7days of surgery. Non-postoperative patients, for whom the RRS was activated in all other settings, were used for comparison as necessary.

There were 609 (12.7%) postoperative patients among the total patients in the registry. The major criteria were staff concerns (30.2%) and low oxygen saturation (29.7%). Hypotension, tachycardia, and inability to contact physicians were observed as triggers significantly more frequently in postoperative patients when compared with non-postoperative patients. Among RRS activations within 7days of surgery, 68.9% of activations occurred within postoperative day 3. The ordering of tests (46.8%) and fluid bolus (34.6%) were major interventions that were performed significantly more frequently in postoperative patients when compared with non-postoperative patients. The rate of RRS activations resulting in ICU care was 32.8%. The mortality rate at 1month was 16.2%.

Here, we aimed to determine the frequencies of UGT1A1 promoter alleles, alpha thalassemia, and βS haplotypes and analyze their association with cholelithiasis and bilirubin levels. The UGT1A1 alleles, -3.7 kb alpha thalassemia deletion and βS haplotypes were determined using DNA sequencing and PCR-based assays in 913 patients with SCA. The mean of total and unconjugated bilirubin and the frequency of cholelithiasis in GS patients were higher when compared to those without this condition, regardless of age (P 0.05). However, not cholelithiasis but total and unconjugated bilirubin levels were associated with βS haplotype. These findings confirm in a large cohort that the UGT1A1 polymorphism influences cholelithiasis and hyperbilirubinemia in SCA.
