A 20 x 10 cm SCIP deep fascial flap was elevated based on the deep branch of the SCIA. The SCIP flap was transferred to the defect to reconstruct the upper abdominal wall. The SCIP was anastomosed to the deep inferior epigastric artery perforator with supermicrosurgical perforator-to-perforator anastomosis. Postoperative course was uneventful with good functional and esthetic results of the donor and recipient sites 11 months after the surgery. Although further studies are required, SCIP fascial flap may be an option for upper abdominal wall reconstruction. The Ir-catalyzed conversion of prochiral tert-cyclobutanols to β-methyl-substituted ketones proceeds under comparably mild conditions in toluene (45-110 °C) and is particularly suited for the enantioselective desymmetrization of β-oxy-substituted substrates to give products with a quaternary chirality center with up to 95 % ee using DTBM-SegPhos as a chiral ligand. Deuteration experiments and kinetic isotope effect measurements revealed major mechanistic differences to related RhI -catalyzed transformations. Supported by DFT calculations we propose the initial formation of an IrIII hydride intermediate, which then undergoes a β-C elimination (C-C bond activation) prior to reductive C-H elimination. The computational model also allows the prediction of the stereochemical outcome. The Ir-catalyzed cyclobutanol cleavage is broadly applicable but fails for substrates bearing strongly coordinating groups. The method is of particular value for the stereo-controlled synthesis of substituted chromanes related to the tocopherols and other natural products. There are currently no population-based reference data sets available for volumetric bone mineral density and microarchitecture parameters measured using the second-generation high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT), yet the technology is rapidly becoming a standard for studies of bone microarchitecture. Although cross-calibrated data sets from the first-generation HR-pQCT have been reported, they are not suitable for second-generation bone microarchitecture properties because of fundamental differences between scanner generations. This study provides site- and sex-specific centile curves across the adult life span for second-generation HR-pQCT properties. A total of 1236 adult participants (768 female and 468 male) from the Calgary area between the ages of 18 and 90 years were scanned at the distal tibia and radius using the second-generation HR-pQCT. Bone densities, microarchitectural properties, and failure load estimated using finite element analysis were determined using standard in vivo protocol. Site- and sex-specific centile curves were generated using the generalized additive models for location, scale, and shape (GAMLSS) method. These data provide reference curves appropriate for predominantly white male and female adults, which can be used as a tool to assess patient- or cohort-specific bone health. © 2020 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. Both sex allocation and sexual conflict can be modulated by spatial structure. However, how the interplay between the type of dispersal and the scale of competition simultaneously affects these traits in sub-divided populations is rarely considered. We investigated sex allocation and sexual conflict evolution in meta-populations of the spider mite Tetranychus urticae evolving under budding (pairing females from the same patch) or random (pairing females from different patches) dispersal and either local (fixed sampling from each subpopulation) or global (sampling as a function of subpopulation productivity) competition. Females evolving under budding dispersal produced less female-biased offspring sex ratios than those from the random dispersal selection regimes, contradicting theoretical predictions. In contrast, the scale of competition did not strongly affect sex allocation. Offspring sex ratio and female fecundity were unaffected by the number of mates, but female fecundity was highest when their mates evolved under budding dispersal, suggesting these males inflict less harm than those evolving under random dispersal. This work highlights that population structure can impact the evolution of sex allocation and sexual conflict. Moreover, selection on either trait may reciprocally affect the evolution of the other, for example via effects on fecundity.

Medicinal plants have been used in healthcare since time immemorial, as have their therapeutic activities and the production of plant-based medicines.

This study aims to use gene-targeted molecular markers for genetic diversity analysis of 16 medicinal plants. Besides, phytochemical analysis antibacterial and antifungal activities of some medicinal plant extracts commonly used in Egypt are compared to major compounds.

DNA-based classification of 16 medicinal species using Conserved DNA-Derived Polymorphism (CDDP) and Start Codon Targeted (SCoT) primers. selleck products Three species representing three orders (Pelargonium graveolens, Matricaria chamomilla, and Hyoscyamus muticus were analysed [high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)] and evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activities against (Escherichia coli O157 H7 ATCC 93111, Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 14028, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) ATCC 43300, Bacillus ceruse ATCC 33018, andation of the 16 medicinal plant species, despite displaying high similarities at morphological and phytochemical analyses but, have antifungal and antibacterial activities. This study evaluated a prolonged effect of palm oil addition to lard-supplemented diet (PLD) on the oxidative status, lysosomal enzyme activities, markers of hepatotoxicity and basic lipid profile in female rats. Female Sprague-Dawley rats received PLD (10% of total fat 7.5% from palm oil and 2.5% from lard), and the control group received lard-supplemented diet (2.5% fat) from 28 days of age for 14 weeks. Histopathological evaluation of the liver from animals fed the PLD showed slight steatosis and signs of mild chronic inflammation. Reduction of extramedullary hematopoiesis and an increased ratio of red/white pulp were observed in the spleen. PLD induced oxidative stress (evaluated in the liver, heart, spleen, muscle and kidney) evidenced by an increase in conjugated dienes and malondialdehyde in all tissues except the muscle; protein carbonyl derivatives were increased as well. The changes in the antioxidant enzyme activities in the evaluated tissues were ambiguous except for the prominent increase in the heart.
