The COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest global public health crisis since the 1918 influenza outbreak. As of early June, the novel coronavirus has infected more than 6.3 million people worldwide and more than 1.9 million in the United States (US). The total number of recorded deaths due to COVID-19 are growing at an alarming rate globally (³383,000) and nationally (³109,000) Evidence is mounting regarding the heavier burden of COVID-19 infection, morbidity, and mortality on the underserved populations in the US. This commentary focuses on this global health pandemic and how mitigation of the virus relies heavily on health behavior change to slow its spread, highlighting how the pandemic specifically affects the most socially and economically disadvantaged populations in the US. The commentary also offers short, intermediate and long-term research and policy focused recommendations. Both the research and policy recommendations included in this commentary emphasize equity-driven (1) research practices, including applying a social determinants and health equity lens on monitoring, evaluation, and clinical trials activities on COVID-19; and (2) policy actions, such as dedicating resources to prioritize high-risk communities for testing, treatment, and prevention approaches and implementing organizational, institutional, and legislative policies that address the social and economic barriers to overall well-being that these populations face during a pandemic. It is our hope that these recommendations will generate momentum in delivering timely, effective, and lifesaving changes.Rice is a major dietary source of the toxic metal cadmium (Cd). Reducing Cd accumulation in rice grain is important for food safety. We generated transgenic rice in two cultivars overexpressing OsNRAMP5, encoding a major influx transporter for manganese (Mn) and Cd, under the control of the OsActin1 or maize Ubiquitin promoter, and tested the effect on Cd uptake and translocation. Overexpression of OsNRAMP5 increased Cd and Mn uptake into the roots, but decreased Cd accumulation in the shoots markedly, and had a relatively small effect on Mn accumulation in the shoots. Overexpressed OsNRAMP5 protein was localized to the plasma membrane of all cell types in the root tips and lateral root primordia without polarity. Synchrotron X-ray fluorescence mapping showed that the overexpression lines accumulated more Cd in the root tips and lateral root primordia compared with wild type. When grown in three Cd-contaminated paddy soils, OsNRAMP5 overexpression decreased grain Cd concentration by 49-94% compared with wild type. Overexpression of OsNRAMP5 decreased Cd translocation from roots to shoots by disrupting radial transport of Cd into the stele for xylem loading, demonstrating the effect of transporter localization and polarity on ion homeostasis.Actions influence sensory processing in a complex way to shape behavior. For example, during actions, a copy of motor signals-termed "corollary discharge" (CD) or "efference copy" (EC)-can be transmitted to sensory regions and modulate perception. However, the sole inhibitory function of the motor copies is challenged by mixed empirical observations as well as multifaceted computational demands for behaviors. We hypothesized that the content in the motor signals available at distinct stages of actions determined the nature of signals (CD vs. EC) and constrained their modulatory functions on perceptual processing. We tested this hypothesis using speech in which we could precisely control and quantify the course of action. In three electroencephalography (EEG) experiments using a novel delayed articulation paradigm, we found that preparation without linguistic contents suppressed auditory responses to all speech sounds, whereas preparing to speak a syllable selectively enhanced the auditory responses to the prepared syllable. A computational model demonstrated that a bifurcation of motor signals could be a potential algorithm and neural implementation to achieve the distinct functions in the motor-to-sensory transformation. These results suggest that distinct motor signals are generated in the motor-to-sensory transformation and integrated with sensory input to modulate perception.Nucleobindin (Nucb)-1 and Nucb2 are DNA and Ca2+ binding proteins with multiple functions in vertebrates. Prohormone convertase-mediated processing of Nucb2 results in the production of biologically active nesfatin-1. Nesfatin-1 is involved in the regulation of reproduction in many vertebrates, including fish. Our lab originally reported a nesfatin-1-like peptide (Nlp) encoded in Nucb1 that exhibits nesfatin-1-like metabolic effects. We hypothesized that Nlp has a suppressive role in the reproductive physiology of fish. In this research, whether Nlp regulates reproductive hormones and oocyte maturation in fish was determined. Single intraperitoneal (I.P) injection of goldfish Nlp (50 ng/g body weight) suppressed salmon and chicken gonadotropin releasing hormone (sgnrh and cgnrh2), gonadotropin inhibiting hormone (gnih) and its receptor (gnihr), kisspeptin and brain aromatase mRNA expression in the hypothalamus of both male and female goldfish. In the pituitary, Nlp decreased mRNAs encoding lhb, fshb and kisspeptin and its receptor, while a significant increase in gnih and gnihr was observed. In the gonads, lh (only in male fish) and fsh receptor mRNAs were also significantly downregulated in Nlp injected fish. Sex-specific modulation of gnih, gnihr and kisspeptin system in the gonads was also observed. mTOR inhibitor review Nlp decreased sex steroidogenic enzyme encoding mRNAs, and circulating levels of testosterone and estradiol. In addition, incubation of zebrafish ovarian follicles with Nlp resulted in a reduction in oocyte maturation. This commentary explores the importance of taking into account the perspective of the patient, even if suffering from a mental disorder, and it will analyse the existing common law to show that the weaker the ability of the patient to form her own wishes and feelings, the more appropriate it would be to rely on the remaining evidence.
