Door Handle Replacement
It's worth replacing door handles if you aren't happy with the way they appear, or if they're difficult to use. With some patience, you can get a new handle in no time.
Modern door handles are often equipped with cover plates that conceal the screws, giving them a more attractive appearance. However, you'll have to attach them separately if your new handle doesn't already have them.
Removal of the Old Handle
The door handle isn't only a decoration for your home It's also a safety feature that allows you to lock and unlock the door. However, as time passes, your door handle may lose its grip, become loose or start to look old and worn out. This is a sign that it's probably time to replace it.
If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it may be time to replace it. This is an issue because it means you can not lock or unlock your door, which could be a security risk for you and your family.
It's also recommended to replace the handle on your door if it is damaged or broken. A broken door handle can be quite dangerous, especially in the event that your children or senior family members have difficulty opening it and end up trapped within. Remove the Strike Plate
You'll have to replace your latch plate when replacing the handle. This is the plate that holds the hole where the door's latch hooks in when the door closes. The packaging that the new handles are packaged with will offer two options for latch plates - either a rectangular or a circular one (see the diagram above detailing the parts of the door handle). If your current latch plate is rectangular, swap it to a circular one so that the latch hooks onto the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle more comfortable to operate.
The first step is to remove the screw that is holding the old latch plate. These screws are often tight, and may require some force to loosen. It might be beneficial to have a second person assist with this part if possible.
After the screws are removed and the latch plate will slide out of the door easily. If the latch plate is stuck or won't move, use a small hammer to scrape the edges. This may help free the plate up.
Now you can prepare the new strike plate to be installed. Using the screws made of wood that came with the new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Be cautious not to tighten too much the screws, as this may cause damage to the strike plate.
If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, shut and open the door to see whether it locks and closes correctly. If not you'll need to adjust the strike plate either up or down, or forward or back, until the door closes and latches correctly.
If the door is moving or jiggling, you may need to increase the size of the hole for latching in the strike plate. This is more prevalent in older doors, however it could be due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are too narrow or are not sized correctly for the latch, or due to damaged or broken strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the situation, use a metal filing instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.
Remove the Latch
The latch is a curved metal piece that slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch is moved forward when you turn the handle. It also connects to a hole in the door frame to keep the door closed. If your door is wiggles when you close it, changing the latch could be all that's needed to correct the issue.
The screws that hold the door latch are hard to spot however, you can use a screwdriver to make an insignificant hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After removing the trim plate, you should be able to remove the latch as well as the bolts that hold it and the spindle.
If the latch isn't able to release, try using a paper clip or a tool to release it from the handle mechanism. Place the item into the recessed latch slot, and gently twist it or jiggle until the handle and latch begin to separate. You may have to repeat this process several times before you can remove the latch.
You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without any issues once you have removed the old one. Use your new screws to connect the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it's correctly placed in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.
Before you install the new handle, make certain to measure your existing backset (the distance from the center of the big hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Verify that the size of the latch of the new handle matches the measurement.
If you are replacing the handle or latch or handle, or if the old lock cylinder has been damaged, then you'll need a new one. Take off the cover plate
