During the 2019 Fourth Croatia Clinical Symposium, speech-language pathologists (SLPs), scholars, and researchers from 29 countries discussed speech-language pathology and psychological practices for the management of early and persistent stuttering. This paper documents what those at the Symposium considered to be the key contemporary clinical issues for early and persistent stuttering.
The authors prepared a written record of the discussion of Symposium topics, taking care to ensure that the content of the Symposium was faithfully reproduced in written form.
Seven contemporary issues for our field emerged from the Symposium.
Effective early intervention is fundamental to proper health care for the disorder. However, as yet, there is no consensus about the timing of early intervention and how it should be managed. read more Currently, clinical translation is a barrier to evidence-based practice with early stuttering, and proactive strategies were suggested for junior SLPs. Apprehension emerged among some discu agreement that SLPs are the ideal professionals to provide basic cognitive-behavior therapy for clients with persistent stuttering. Questions were raised about our discipline standards for basic professional preparation programs for stuttering management.
The objective of the ongoing study was to investigate how SARS-CoV-2 infection spread within two hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany by testing the employees working in high-risk, intermediate-risk and low-risk-areas for the presence of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies. Presented intermediate results evaluate the first infection period until the end of September 2020.
The study "COVID-19 Hotspot hospital?- Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in hospital employees in a secondary care hospital network in Germany " is a prospective, single centre observational cohort study conducted at the St. Vincenz Hospital Datteln with 316 beds. The presented data include one other hospital St. Laurentius Stift Waltrop, Germany with 172 beds.
Between June 2020 and September 2020 we analyzed serum samples of 907 employees which represents 62.1% of all employees. Thirteen employees (1.4%), respectively 13/696 healthcare workers (HCWs) (1.9%) had detectable SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies. Among them, 4 (30.8%) were aware of COVID-19 exposure, and 5 (38.5%) reported clinical symptoms. HCWs working in high-risk areas had a seroprevalence rate of 1.6% (1/64), HCWs working in intermediate-risk area 1.7% (11/632) and 0.5% employees (1/211) in low-risk areas with no contact to patients were seropositive.
Even if we treated COVID-19 positive patients, we found no clear evidence that infection was transmitted to HCWs in contact to these patients. As knowledge about SARS-CoV-2 transmission evolves, the concept of infection prevention must be continuously reviewed and adapted as needed to keep hospitals a safe place.

Literature increasingly reports a lack of compassion in patient care by students and junior nurses; empirical knowledge regarding experiences of compassionate care among nursing students remains understudied. Student experiences in the clinical setting may influence their development of compassion competencies. This study explored the experiences of baccalaureate nursing students in gaining competencies to deliver compassionate care during their clinical practice year. A descriptive qualitative study using semi-structured in-depth interviews was conducted. Thematic analysis was employed, generating six themes. The first three themes depict positive aspects of compassion development, including 'gaining patient acceptance,' 'motivation for professional growth,' and 'establishing an emotional bond with patients.' On the other hand, the other three themes capture the barriers to compassionate care, 'distrust,' 'fear of harm due to violence,' and 'heavy workload.' The positive and negative experiences shared by students indicate that hospital and nursing administrators need to foster a positive practice environment and nursing instructors should become role models to encourage compassionate care.
The objective of this study to research medical and nursing students' level of knowledge of patient safety.
Patient safety represents the foundation of health care quality, while education represents a requirement which has to be fulfilled to achieve and maintain that quality.
The research was conducted as a descriptive/analytical cross-sectional survey, with medical and nursing students being the sample (n=370).
The research instrument was the WHO questionnaire "What is Patient Safety? ", which displayed good psychometric characteristics.
The research results indicate that the study department has a significant influence on the level of students' knowledge and attitudes to patient safety. Nursing students in their final academic year show statistically significantly higher level of knowledge in relation to the first year students. Medical students are not significantly different, in terms of the level of knowledge and attitudes, in their first and final academic years.
Knowledge and attitudes regarding patient safety shown by the students in this survey significantly contribute to the comprehension of the necessity of the implementation and development of patient safety course into the existing curricula and syllabi of all colleges and universities related to health care.
