The energy balance for each of the fires was determined. The results showed that both radiation and convection play significant roles in these pool fires. Radiation was the dominant mechanism of heat feedback to the fuel surface, accounting from 68 % to 88 % of the energy, while enthalpy convected in the plume represented 68 % to 78 % of the fire's total energy, far exceeding radiative emission to the surroundings. In a regression model for treatment outcome in a randomized clinical trial, a treatment effect modifier is a covariate that has an interaction with the treatment variable, implying that the treatment efficacies vary across values of such a covariate. In this paper, we present a method for determining a composite variable from a set of baseline covariates, that can have a nonlinear association with the treatment outcome, and acts as a composite treatment effect modifier. We introduce a parsimonious generalization of the single-index models that targets the effect of the interaction between the treatment conditions and the vector of covariates on the outcome, a single-index model with multiple-links (SIMML) that estimates a single linear combination of the covariates (i.e., a single-index), with treatment-specific nonparametric link functions. The approach emphasizes a focus on the treatment-by-covariates interaction effects on the treatment outcome that are relevant for making optimal treatment decisions. Asymptotic results for estimator are obtained under possible model misspecification. A treatment decision rule based on the derived single-index is defined, and it is compared to other methods for estimating optimal treatment decision rules. An application to a clinical trial for the treatment of depression is presented.Understanding and using symbolic fractions in mathematics is critical for access to advanced STEM concepts. However, children and adults consistently struggle with fractions. Here, we take a novel perspective on symbolic fractions, considering them within the framework of relational structures in cognitive psychology, such as those studied in analogy research. We tested the hypothesis that relational reasoning ability is important for reasoning about fractions by examining the relation between scores on a domain-general test of relational reasoning (TORR Jr.) and a test of fraction knowledge consisting of various types of fraction problems in 194 second grade and 145 fifth grade students. We found that relational reasoning was a significant predictor of fractions knowledge, even when controlling for non-verbal IQ and fractions magnitude processing for both grades. The effects of relational reasoning also remained significant when controlling for overall mathematics knowledge and skill for second graders but was attenuated for fifth graders. These findings suggest that this important subdomain of mathematical cognition is integrally tied to relational reasoning and opens the possibility that instruction targeting relational reasoning may prove to be a viable avenue for improving children's fractions skills. As public awareness of and exposure to Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) have increased worldwide, the fear of developing ADRD, or dementia-related anxiety (DRA), is expected to increase as well. It was hypothesized that at least part of what makes dementia so anxiety provoking, is the association of ADRD with older adults, an often stigmatized group. To test this hypothesis, two online studies examined how ageist beliefs contribute to DRA; the roles of ADRD-related factors, such as self-perceived risk and personal exposure, were also examined. Study 1 included university students (n = 295, age range 18 to 58 years, M age = 21.16, SD age = 4.85) to determine what factors may contribute to young adults' DRA. Study 2 included adults of all ages (n = 352, age range 18 to 81 years, M age = 37.85, SD age = 12.88) to determine whether Study 1 results were replicable among adults of all ages. selleck chemicals Hierarchical multiple regressions were used. Results from both studies demonstrated that being female and having higher self-perceived ADRD risk and benevolent ageism uniquely explicated higher levels of DRA. Within Study 2, significant effects of both benevolent and hostile ageism were observed, suggesting that diverse negative attitudes toward older adults are associated with DRA. It is possible that strong ageist attitudes stigmatize older adults as those who are forgetful and this may contribute to DRA, as age is a major risk factor for developing dementia. Study limitations and directions for future research are discussed.Front-of-package (FOP) food labels are symbols, schemes, or systems designed to communicate concise and useful nutrition-related information to consumers to facilitate healthier food choices. FOP label policies have been implemented internationally that could serve as policy models for the U.S. However, the First Amendment poses a potential obstacle to U.S. government-mandated FOP requirements. We systematically reviewed existing international and major U.S.-based nutrition-related FOP labels to consider potential U.S. policy options and conducted legal research to evaluate the feasibility of mandating a FOP label in the U.S. We identified 24 international and 6 U.S.-based FOP labeling schemes. FOP labels which only disclosed nutrient-specific data would likely meet First Amendment requirements. Certain interpretive FOP labels which provide factual information with colors or designs to assist consumers interpret the information could similarly withstand First Amendment scrutiny, but questions remain regarding whether certain colors or shapes would qualify as controversial and not constitutional. Labels that provide no nutrient information and only an image or icon to characterize the entire product would not likely withstand First Amendment scrutiny.Traditionally hazard quotients (HQs) have been computed for ecological risk assessment, often without quantifying the underlying uncertainties in the risk estimate. We demonstrate a Bayesian network approach to quantitatively assess uncertainties in HQs using a retrospective case study of dietary mercury (Hg) risks to Florida panthers (Puma concolor coryi). The Bayesian network was parameterized, using exposure data from a previous Monte Carlo-based assessment of Hg risks (Barron et al., 2004. ECOTOX 13223), as a representative example of the uncertainty and complexity in HQ calculations. Mercury HQs and risks to Florida panthers determined from a Bayesian network analysis were nearly identical to those determined using the prior Monte Carlo probabilistic assessment and demonstrated the ability of the Bayesian network to replicate conventional HQ-based approaches. Sensitivity analysis of the Bayesian network showed greatest influence on risk estimates from daily ingested dose by panthers and mercury levels in prey, and less influence from toxicity reference values.
