Whether prevention strategy for postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) should be tailored across racial groups remains unknown.

Patients who underwent major abdominal operation in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) were examined. Our primary outcome was postoperative VTE, and the secondary outcome was postoperative bleeding. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed and validated with the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database.

781,888 patients from NIS were analyzed. Overall VTE rate was 2.0%. Compared to White patients, Hispanic (OR 0.85, 95% CI 0.78-0.93, p<0.01) and Asian patients (OR 0.49, 95% CI 0.40-0.61, p<0.01) had significantly lower risks for VTE. In contrast, Asian patients had a significantly higher risk of bleeding (OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.24-1.56, p<0.01). Similar trends were observed in NSQIP.

To investigate the trend and outcomes of acute pulmonary embolism (PE) during pregnancy and puerperium using a large national database.

The National Inpatient Sample was queried to identify pregnancy-related hospitalizations in the United States from January 1, 2007, through September 30, 2015. Temporal trends in the rates of acute PE and in-hospital mortality rates were extracted.

Among 37,524,314 hospitalizations, 6,333 patients (0.02%) had acute PE. The prevalence of comorbidities and risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, and smoking increased, but rates of acute PE did not change significantly (18.01 in 2007 vs 19.36 in 2015, per 100,000 hospitalizations, P

=.21). Advanced therapies were used in a small number of women (systemic thrombolysis 2.4%, surgical pulmonary embolectomy 0.5%, and inferior vena cava filter in 8.3%). Rates of in-hospital mortality were almost 200-fold higher among those who had acute PE (29.3 vs 0.13, per 1000 pregnancy-related, P<.001). Our objectives are estimating a corrected value of plasma D-dimer as a linear function of ferritin, C-reactive protein and fibrinogen and stablishing a cut-off point of high probability of VTE.

Age and sex matched case-control study of all patients diagnosed with COVID 19 and VTE between March and May 2020 in a tertiary hospital in Madrid (Spain). Using linear regression, the best predictive model will be estimated and residual D-dimer values will be obtained and analyzed using ROC curves to determine its discriminative performance.
