Ganoderma lucidum spore (GLS) is gaining recognition as a medicinal part of G. Pitavastatin mouse lucidum and has been reported to possess various pharmacological properties, such as antitumor activity. Pitavastatin mouse In this work, wall-broken GLS powder (BGLSP) and wall-removed GLS powder (RGLSP), two kinds of GLS powder with different manufacturing techniques, were compared in terms of contents of active constituents and in vivo and in vitro antitumor effects.

The ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry method was used to determine the contents of polysaccharides and total triterpenoids in BGLSP and RGLSP. link2 Pitavastatin mouse Seventeen individual triterpenoids were further quantified using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography and quantitative analysis of multi-components by single marker. The antitumor effects of BGLSP and RGLSP were evaluated using in vitro cell viability assay against human gastric carcinoma SGC-7901, lung carcinoma A549 and lymphoma Ramos and further validated by in vivo zebrafish xenograft models with transplanted SGC-7901, Ae contents of the polysaccharides and triterpenoids and demonstrated that the wall-removing manufacturing technique could significantly improve the levels of active constituents, and thereby enhance the antitumor activity.

Postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction (PGD) is one of the most common complications in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery. Acupuncture has been used widely in gastrointestinal diseases due to its effectiveness and minimally invasive nature.

This study evaluated the efficacy of using transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) during the surgery and postoperative recovery in patients with gastric and colorectal surgery for improving postoperative gastrointestinal function.

A total of 280 patients undergoing abdominal surgery were stratified by type of surgery (i.e., gastric or colorectal surgery) and randomly allocated into the TEAS group (group T) or the sham group (group S). Patients in group T received TEAS at LI4, PC6, ST36 and ST37. Patients in group S received pseudo-TEAS at sham acupoints. link2 The stimulation was given from 30min before anesthesia until the end of surgery. The same treatment was performed at 9 am on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd days after surgery, until the recovery of). Postoperative hospitalization days and the resulting cost to patients were greatly reduced in the TEAS group (P<0.01).

Perioperative TEAS was able to promote the recovery of postoperative gastrointestinal function, reduce the incidence of PGD and PONV. The concentration of SP was decreased by TEAS treatment, which indicates that the brain-gut axis may play a role in how TEAS regulates gastrointestinal function.

Kidney cancer is a major urological disease globally, with more than 400 000 new cases diagnosed every year.

To investigate incidence and mortality trends for kidney cancer and their associations with modifiable risk factors for kidney cancer.

The most up-to-date figures on kidney cancer incidence and mortality were collected from the GLOBOCAN database and the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents (CI5). link2 Data on total alcohol consumption and the prevalence of smoking, overweight, diabetes, and hypertension were extracted from the World Health Organization Global Health Observatory data repository.

Age-standardized rates (ASRs) for incidence and mortality and their correlations with potential risk factors for kidney cancer were investigated. Multivariable linear regression analysis was also conducted. The 10-yr temporal patterns for incidence are presented as the average annual percent change with 95% confidence interval using joinpoint regression analysis.

Globally, there is wide variation in kidney cisk factors for kidney cancer incidence and mortality have been identified. The increasing incidence of kidney cancer among younger individuals is worrying and warrants early action on possible preventive measures.

The incidence of kidney cancer has been increasing globally, particularly in European countries and the younger population. Risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, overweight, and hypertension, and these factors are all modifiable.

However, data proving their clinical utility are urgently required before implementation of their use outside clinical trials, and their off-trial use needs to be better regulated.

Being present during labour and birth can, for some fathers, result in feelings of fear, uncertainty, anxiety, and helplessness. Witnessing birth complications or adverse events may cause immediate and long-term anxiety and stress. In turn, this experience can impact on men's sense of self and identity as a man and father and can affect his relationship with his infant and partner. The aim of this study was to explore the immediate and longer-term impact of witnessing a complicated or adverse birth experiences on men in heterosexual relationships and their role as a father.

An interpretive qualitative approach informed the design of this study. A total of 17 fathers, one from New Zealand and sixteen from Australia participated through face to face, telephone and email interviews. The ages of the men were between 24 to 48 years, and the time since the adverse birth experience ranged from 4.5 months to 20.5 years.

Thematic analysis revealed three major themes representing men's experiences of witnessing arole at the birth. There is a need to include and inform the expectant father that help is available if they experience negative feelings of hopelessness or despair. Maternity services and care providers need to involve fathers so that they feel part of the maternity care system and journey which may mitigate feelings of helplessness.

Findings demonstrate that following a complicated or adverse birth experience, men questioned their role as a father, their place in the family and their role at the birth. There is a need to include and inform the expectant father that help is available if they experience negative feelings of hopelessness or despair. Hypothermia and selective brain perfusion is used for brain protection during an acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) correction. We compared the outcomes between antegrade and retrograde cerebral perfusion techniques after ATAAD surgery.

Between January 1995 and August 2017, 290 patients underwent ATAAD repair under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest/retrograde cerebral perfusion (DHCA/RCP) in 173 patients and moderate hypothermic circulatory arrest/antegrade cerebral perfusion (MHCA/ACP) in 117 patients. link3 Outcomes of interest were 30-day mortality, new-onset postoperative neurological complications, and length of intensive care unit (ICU) and in-hospital stays.

No differences were observed between the preoperative details of both groups (p>0.05). Thirty-day (30-day) mortality did not differ between groups (RCP vs ACP, 22% vs 21.4%; p=0.90). New-onset postoperative permanent neurological dysfunctions and coma was similar in two group in 6.9% versus 10.3% of patients and 3.8% versus 6.8% patients on-hospital stay did not differ between the MHCA/ACP and DHCA/RCP groups after ATAAD correction. Although the rates of 30-day mortality and postoperative neurological complications were high after ATAAD repair, ACP had no advantages over the RCP technique.

This study was performed to assess long-term survival and identify risk factors for acute myocardial infarction in patients complicated with ventricular septal rupture (VSR).

A retrospective analysis of 116 patients with post-infarction VSR (PI-VSR) hospitalised in Beijing Anzhen Hospital from January 2008 to February 2019 was performed. The independent risk factors for in-hospital mortality were assessed using multivariate analysis with a logistic regression model. The Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test were carried out for long-term survival in the surgery group.

The overall in-hospital mortality rate was 47.4%. Logistic regression analysis revealed that age (p<0.05), female sex (p<0.05), no surgical repair (p<0.05), liver dysfunction (p<0.05), high heart rate (p<0.05), and low platelet count (PLT; p<0.05) were independent risk factors for in-hospital mortality. link3 The 1-year mortality rate was lower in the surgery group than in the medical treatment group (18.3% vs 84.5%; p<0.005). During the mean follow-up of 5.2±5.1 years (median, 1.3 years), the actuarial survival rates of these patients at 5 and 10 years were 72.3% and 43.2%, respectively.

The overall in-hospital mortality rate remained high. The independent risk factors for in-hospital mortality associated with PI-VSR were age, female sex, no surgical repair, liver dysfunction, tachycardia, and low PLT level. The 1-year mortality and long-term outcomes of patients treated with surgery were significantly better than those of patients who were treated conservatively.

Bicuspid aortic valves (BAV) and related aortopathy remain an intriguing topic. link3 Not all BAVs get diseased and around 40% would develop aortic dilatation in their lifetime. If haemodynamic theory is to be believed, then leaflet fusion pattern should have an impact. This study sought to compare the association of aortic morphologies and rate of growth in a set of 102 BAV acropathies operated at a single centre, based on the fusion patterns.

Data on aortic valve replacements over a 10-year period was analysed from a prospectively maintained database. Of the 198 BAV undergoing surgery, 102 had aortic dilatation above 40 mm on echocardiogram. These underwent computed tomography (CT) aortograms and were followed up as a part of a database. The impact of leaflet fusion patterns on aortic dilatation pattern and rate was analysed.

Of the 102, two patients had type 0 pathology and one had left-noncoronary (LN) leaflet fusion. Seventy-four (74) had type 1A or left-right (RL) fusion and 25 had type 1B right-noncoronary (RN) fusion.
