The study investigated why sustainable technologies are not used to collect, dismantle and sell e-waste at Agbogbloshie given the risk of injury and extensive environmental pollution associated with handling of electronic waste. The study objectives were to examine the nature of technologies adopted to manage e-waste, assess challenges faced in adopting sustainable technologies; determine the missing links between formal and informal e-waste workers. Research questions were; what is the current level of technology adopted to manage e-waste and challenges limiting the adoption of sustainable technologies; and what are the missing links between the formal and informal sectors that limit adoption of sustainable e-waste management strategies. Data collection involved use of questionnaire to gather data on technologies used for e-waste management, challenges faced in using such technologies and what the workers consider as solutions to sustainable e-waste management. Field observations helped to explain waste management operations and questionnaire responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Study results show most of the e-waste workers are youthful and not much educated. The use of unsustainable technologies to manage e-waste has contributed to physical injuries to workers and pollution of the environment. A major challenge limiting the use of sustainable technologies is lack of financial resources to acquire modern equipment despite the laborious nature of the work. The paper concludes that sustainable solutions to electronic waste management requires support from government to subsidize the cost of sustainable technologies in e-waste management. To produce monovalent and bivalent influenza vaccines composed of virus-like particles (VLPs) containing hemagglutinin (HA), we generated four recombinant Baculoviruses derived from Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus (BmNPV) and Autographa california nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcNPV). Monovalent Fukushima (A/tufted duck/Fukushima/16/2011 [H5N1]) (FkH5) and Anhui (A/Anhui/1/2013 [H7N9]) (AnH7) VLP influenza vaccines were produced in silkworm pupae infected with FkH5-BmNPV or AnH7-BmNPV. To produce a bivalent FkH5 and AnH7 vaccine, the pupae were simultaneously inoculated with FkH5-BmNPV and AnH7-BmNPV. Then, interleukin (IL)-containing bivalent vaccines were produced by Eri silkworm pupae following triple infection with FkH5-AcNPV, AnH7-AcNPV, and IL-12-AcNPV. Fluorescent antibody tests in Sf9 cells triple-infected with FkH5-AcNPV, AnH7-AcNPV, and IL-12-AcNPV showed coexpression of FkH5, AnH7, and IL-12 antigens, suggesting the presence of VLPs containing all three antigens. We then performed competitive hemagglutination inhibition (CHI) tests to calculate the VLP vaccine constituents. Inoculation with two recombinant viruses led to the production of bivalent vaccines containing very similar amounts of the H5 and H7 antigens, suggesting that our dual infection system can be used to produce bivalent VLP vaccines. Immunisation of mice with our developed monovalent and bivalent VLP vaccines induced the production of HI antibody, which protected against a sublethal dose of influenza virus. These IL-12-containing vaccines tended to display increased protection against hetero-subtype influenza viruses.Flooding in urban and periurban areas is a complex phenomenon that results from the interplay between urban expansion and the dynamics of the hydrological system. Understanding both processes is essential to manage flood risk. This study aimed to analyze the flood risk in urban and periurban areas of the upper and middle basin of the Luján River (Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires, Argentina) between 1985 and 2015. FLT3-IN-3 supplier We assessed the factors that affect flood frequency by analyzing the precipitation variations obtained from meteorological data and applying hydrological models. We also used supervised classification of remote sensing imagery to detect increases in impervious surface areas that could enhance flooding. Furthermore, we combined both analyses to identify flood risk situations in the region. Our results indicated that maximum precipitation and hydrometric values remained stable during the study period, with a marked interannual variability due to the presence of dry and wet phases. During the dry phase (2011-2015), when flooding events were infrequent, there was a steady urban sprawl in the floodplain area and, as a result, more people would have subsequently become exposed to flood risk. Our results evidence the lack of regional policies to regulate the urban sprawl in flood risk regions.

Low and middle-income countries (LMIC) have a considerable burden of neurological disorders. Available profile of neurological disorders in our environment is biased towards neurological admissions. There is a paucity of data on out-patient neurological conditions in sub-Saharan Africa.

To determine the frequency and demographic data of neurological illnesses being managed at the adult out-patient neurology clinic of the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam (AKHD).

The electronic medical records of all cases with neurological diseases who presented to the adult neurology clinic of the AKHD between January 2018, and December 2019 were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. Neurological disorders are categorized according to the international classification of diseases version-11(ICD-11).

Of the 1186 patients seen in a period of 2years, there were 597 (50.4%) females and 588(49.6%) males, with median age (IQR) of 38 (30.0-52.0) and 42 (33.0-54.5) years respectively (

=0.001). Headache disorders (27.0%); disorders of the nerve root, plexus or peripheral nerves (23.4%); epilepsy (9.3%), cerebrovascular disorders (8.9%); movement disorders (3.6%) and disorders of cognition (3.5%) were the primary neurological conditions encountered. Musculoskeletal disorders (7.5%) and mental/behavioral disorders (5.4%) were other conditions seen in the clinic.

The pattern of neurological disorders in this cohort mirrors that of high-income countries. However, the manpower to tackle these conditions pales in comparison. Increasing the neurology workforce and paying extra attention to non-communicable disorders in SSA is advocated.
