To identify the Spanish language neuropsychological tests most frequently used in the evaluation of Hispanic Americans/Latino/as/x across eight neuropsychological domains. To compare these with previously surveyed most frequently used English language tests in the US/Canada. To describe the norms used with Spanish language tests.
An anonymous, uncompensated, 12-min survey was emailed to 169 members of the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, Hispanic Neuropsychological Society, and National Academy of Neuropsychology who self-identified as providing neuropsychological evaluations in Spanish via organizational websites.
The response rate was 36%. Respondents were all licensed U.S. psychologists with the majority fluent in Spanish, conducting less than half their evaluations in Spanish. There was an overlap between the versions of the three most frequently used Spanish versus English neuropsychological tests, but it varied by domain with 3/3 similar for visual-spatial/visuoconstructional skills a the continental US except within the mood/personality and sensory/motor functioning domains where English language norms predominate.Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has been applied in many fields of science and is increasingly being considered as a tool in the clinical setting. This review examines its application for diagnosis of inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs). IEMs, whether involving deficiency in the synthesis and degradation of metabolites, or in lipoprotein metabolism, affect nearly 3% of the global population. NMR is a preferred method for comprehensive evaluation of complex biofluids such as blood or urine, as it can provide a relatively unbiased overview of all compounds that are present and does not destroy or otherwise chemically alter the sample. While current newborn screening programs take advantage of other more sensitive methods, such as mass spectrometry, NMR has advantages especially for urine analysis with respect to ease of sample preparation and the reproducibility of results. NMR spectroscopy is particularly compatible with analysis of lipoproteins because it provides information about their size and density, not easily attained by other methods, that can help the clinician to better manage patients with dyslipidemia. We believe that NMR holds great potential for expanding clinical diagnosis in the future, in the field of IEMs and beyond.
During the period of hospitalization patients can develop functional decline. The main aim of our study was to assess the natural trajectory of each Activity of Daily Living (ADL) and to assess how in-hospital exercise could influence short-term trajectory of ADLs.
Acutely hospitalized patients (n=297, 56.5% women) were randomly assigned to the intervention or control (usual care) group within the first 48 hours of admission. An exercise training programme was prescribed in two daily sessions (morning and evening) of 20 minutes duration during 5-7 consecutive days for the intervention group. The primary end-point was the change in every ADL (assessed with the Barthel Index) from 2 weeks before admission to hospital discharge.

Recognizing vulnerability to Alzheimer's disease (AD) requires from non-invasive, simple, and inexpensive markers that can be easily obtained in primary care settings. While saliva meets all these requirements, there is lack of evidence linking salivary constituents to in vivo AD pathology in aging.
We examined the potential of salivary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) for identifying global cortical amyloid-beta (Aβ) burden, deficits in regional glucose uptake, and poorer cognition in 71 cognitively normal older adults. We further assessed whether salivary TAC-related cognitive performance was associated with higher Aβ load and lower cortical glucose consumption.
Linear regression analyses adjusted by age, sex, years of education, and ApoE4 status showed that salivary TAC was associated with slower processing speed and poorer sustained attention, as well as with higher Aβ load and lower glucose metabolism in cortical regions vulnerable to cognitive aging and AD. Results also revealed that lower scores in processing speed and sustained attention were associated with greater Aβ burden and lower regional glucose consumption, respectively.
Together, these findings support the use of salivary TAC for preventive screening and detection of cerebral vulnerability to AD. Further research is needed to evaluate the utility of salivary TAC as a clinical marker.

Cognitive reserve (CR) is the capacity to adapt to (future) brain damage without any or only minimal clinical symptoms. The underlying neuroplastic mechanisms remain unclear. Electrocorticography (ECOG), electroencephalography (EEG), and magnetoencephalography (MEG) may help elucidate the brain mechanisms underlying CR, as CR is thought to be related to efficient utilization of remaining brain resources. The purpose of this systematic review is to collect, evaluate, and synthesize the findings on neural correlates of CR estimates using ECOG, EEG, and MEG.
We examined articles that were published from the first standardized definition of CR. Eleven EEG and five MEG cross-sectional studies met the inclusion criteria They concerned original research, analyzed (M)EEG in humans, used a validated CR estimate, and related (M)EEG to CR. A total of 1383 participants from heterogeneous patient, young and older healthy groups were divided into three categories by (M)EEG methodology Eight (M)EEG studies employed event-related fields or potentials, six studies analyzed brain oscillations at rest (of which one also analyzed a cognitive task), and three studies analyzed brain connectivity. Various CR estimates were employed and all studies compared different (M)EEG measures and CR estimates. Several associations between (M)EEG measures and CR estimates were observed.
Our findings support that (M)EEG measures are related to CR estimates, particularly in healthy individuals. However, the character of this relationship is dependent on the population and task studied, warranting further studies.
