The current study examined the influence of source and concentration of dietary phosphorus (P) on the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of P in growing pigs. Eighteen cannulated barrows (25 ± 5 kg) were allotted to a triplicate 6 × 3 incomplete Latin square design with six diets and three periods. The diets comprised of soybean meal (SBM) or distillers' dried grain with solubles (DDGS) as sole sources of dietary P, and three concentrations of P (2.0, 2.5 or 3.0 g/kg) in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement. The AID and ATTD of P were not different (p = 0.37) in all diets. Apparent digestibility of P was affected (p less then 0.01) by source and concentration of P. There was no interaction between source and concentration of dietary P on the apparent digestibility of P. Determined by regression analysis, the true ileal digestibility of P was 58.3% or 57.6%, and true total tract digestibility of P was 56.0% or 62.6%, for SBM or DDGS, respectively. The regression-derived ileal endogenous P loss (EPL) was 0.61 or 0.13 g/kg DM intake, and total tract EPL was 0.53 or 0.35 g/kg DM intake, for SBM or DDGS, respectively. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that both the source and concentration of dietary P affect the digestibility of P in growing pigs.

The odds ratios of epilepsy were 1.46 (95% CI, 1.18, 1.82) for one unit increase in log odds ratio of having depression, 1.44 (95% CI, 1.13, 1.85) for one standard deviation increase in serum ferritin, 1.12 (95% CI, 1.04, 1.21) for one standard deviation increase in transferrin saturation, and 1.25 (95% CI, 1.09, 1.43) for one standard deviation increase in the prevalence of smoking initiation. There were suggestive associations of serum iron and magnesium with epilepsy. No association was observed for insomnia, blood pressure, alcohol consumption, or serum vitamin B12, 25-hydroxyvitamin D and calcium levels.

Reducing prevalence of depression and smoking initiation should be considered as primary prevention strategies for epilepsy.This study aimed to assess the sex differences in the feeding behaviour of non-obese diabetic severe combined immunodeficient (NOD SCID) mice in a pharmacological model of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1Dm). In our study, we chose NOD SCID mice of both sexes and assessed their feeding behaviour, body weight, body fat and water content under identical experimental conditions and diets. After 1 month of diabetes mellitus in mice in the experimental group, males and females did not show any increase in body weight, and they weighed significantly less than the control group. However, compared with the control group, in females with a background of T1Dm, there was a significant decrease in body fat. The amount of water consumed in the experimental groups was higher than that in the control groups. The amount of food consumed by males increased when they increased their water consumption, whereas food consumption in females decreased significantly with an increase in water consumption. In recent years, molecular survey methods detecting DNA released by target-species into their environment (eDNA) have been rapidly on the rise. Despite providing new, cost-effective tools for conservation, eDNA-based methods are prone to errors. Best field and laboratory practices can mitigate some, but the risks of errors cannot be eliminated and need to be accounted for. Here, we synthesize recent advances in data processing tools that increase the reliability of interpretations drawn from eDNA data. We review advances in occupancy models to consider spatial data-structures and simultaneously assess rates of false positive and negative results. Further, we introduce process-based models and the integration of metabarcoding data as complementing approaches to increase the reliability of target-species assessments. These tools will be most effective when capitalizing on multi-source data sets collating eDNA with classical survey and citizen-science approaches, paving the way for more robust decision-making processes in conservation planning.One of the greatest challenges in ecology is to understand and predict the functional outcome of interaction networks. Size-matching between plants and pollinators is one of the key functional traits expected to play a major role in structuring plant-pollinator interactions. However, the community-wide patterns of size-matching remain largely unexplored. We studied the association between the degree of size-matching and foraging efficiency, pollination efficiency and the probability of pairwise interactions in a community of Lamiaceae. Our study revealed that foraging efficiency is maximal when bee proboscis length corresponds to the corolla tube depth of the flower visited. Pollination efficiency was maximal when the bee body height corresponds to the corolla width of the flower visited. While the degree of size-matching did not influence the probability of interaction, it significantly influenced the strength of the interaction in terms of visitation frequency. We suggest a size-matching index as a reliable metric to predict the frequency of interactions as well as the effectiveness of visits in terms of foraging efficiency and pollination efficiency.
