Ethnopharmacological relevance Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf (Poaceae) leaves is often consumed as infusion in folk medicine due to its therapeutic properties. This plant is also rich in essential oil, which has several beneficial effects to the human health. It is known that medications commonly used to treat anxiety disorders cause undesirable side effects. Thus, it is important to evaluate the anxiolytic effects of natural products from plants, such as C. citratus, as an alternative therapy to treat these disorders. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the anxiolytic properties of C. citratus essential oil (EO), hydroalcoholic extract (E1), citral (CIT), geraniol (GER) and the mixture of these terpenoids, as well as its possible mechanism of action by using zebrafish as an anxiety model. Methods Adult zebrafish were treated (by immersion) with C. citratus EO, E1, CIT and/or GER. The anxiolytic effects were analyzed by using the light-dark test. The mechanism involved in the anxiolytic effecvaluate the anxiolytic effect of C. citratus and its related compounds. Moreover, the involvement of GABAA receptors could be responsible for the effect showed by the samples. These obtained results can potentially validate the ethnopharmacological use of C. citratus as a medicinal plant for the treatment of anxiety disorders in folk medicine.Ethnopharmacological relevance Cynanchum paniculatum (Bunge) Kitag. ex H. Hara (C. paniculatum), is a broadly used traditional medicinal plant by East Asians. The roots and rhizomes of this herb were named 'Xu-Chang-Qing' since the Qin or Han Dynasty (B.C.221-220) in China. It is pungent and warm in nature and associated with the liver and stomach meridians. Moreover, the efficacy of this herb are dispelling wind, resolving dampness, relieving pain and itching. It is used for treating the onset of rheumatic arthralgia, stomachache, toothache, lumbago, soft tissue injury, rubella and eczema. Aim of the study The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic review about the botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry and pharmacology of C. paniculatum on the strength of the studies in the past two decades. Materials and methods A comprehensive search on previous literature was conducted on databases such as Web of Science, Pubmed, Sciencedirect, American Chemical Society (ACS), Google scholar and China national ingredients and various pharmacological activities with anti-inflammatory, antitumor, neuroprotection, etc. In the future, C. paniculatum still needs further study, such as identifying the active compounds, clarifying the pharmacological mechanisms, discussing quality and safety.Ethnobotanical relevance Leaves of Mangifera indica L. have folk-uses in tropical regions of the world as health teas, as a remedy for exhaustion and fatigue, as a vegetable, and as a medicine. Mangifera indica leaf extract (MLE) had previously been demonstrated to alter brain electrical activity in-vivo. The aim of the present series of studies was to investigate whether mangiferin, a major compound in leaves and in MLE, is responsible for the neurocognitive activity of MLE, and if the CNS activities of MLE have translational potential. Materials and methods MLE, tradename Zynamite, is produced by Nektium Pharma, Spain. Isolated mangiferin was tested in-vitro in radioligand binding and enzyme inhibition studies against 106 CNS targets. Changes in the electroencephalograms (EEG's) of MLE and mangiferin were recorded in-vivo from four brain regions. Two double blind randomized placebo-controlled crossover clinical trials were conducted, each with 16 subjects. At 90 min and at 60 min respectively, after oral inopic potential, and larger clinical studies are needed to realise this potential.Vibrio parahaemolyticus (V. parahaemolyticus) is a common pathogen for marine crustacean, which causes severe illnesses in aquatic animals. Therefore, it is meaningful to explore the mechanism during V. parahaemolyticus infection. In this study, to investigate the immune responses of mud crab Scylla paramamosain (S. paramamosain) to V. parahaemolyticus, we established the metabolic and transcriptional profiles of mud crab hemocytes challenged with V. Cerdulatinib parahaemolyticus. The results indicated that V. parahaemolyticus infection could induce a series of metabolism alterations at both metabolome and transcriptome levels, including biosynthesis of amino acids and Aminoacyl-tRNA, Purine and pyrimidine metabolism, TCA cycle and glutamine metabolism. In this context, through the integration of metabolomics and transcriptomics, our study provided a more comprehensive understanding of the biological process in mud crab against pathogen infection.Understanding the functions of genes related to disease resistance and identifying polymorphisms in these genes are essential in molecular breeding for disease resistance. Viral nervous necrosis (VNN) is one of the major diseases in the Asian seabass, Lates calcarifer. Our previous works on QTL mapping, GWAS and cell-line transcriptome analysis of the Asian seabass after NNV challenge revealed that the gene GAB3 might be a candidate gene for VNN resistance. In this study, we cloned and characterized GAB3, and identified SNPs in the gene of the Asian seabass. The cDNA of the gene was 2165 bp, containing an ORF of 1674 bp encoding 557 amino acids. The gene consisted of 10 exons and nine introns. It was ubiquitously expressed in normal fish. An analysis of the association between two SNPs in the second intron and NNV resistance in 1035 fish descended from 43 families revealed that the two SNPs were significantly associated with VNN resistance. After NNV infection, the expression of GAB3 was significantly increased in the brain, spleen, muscle and gut, and was suppressed in the liver. The GAB3 protein was localized in the nucleus. Overexpression of GAB3 with specific GAB3-pcDNA was positively correlated to increased viral RNA and titer in NNV-infected Asian seabass cells. Our study provides new evidence to support that GAB3 may be an important gene related to NNV resistance. In addition, the SNPs provide DNA markers for the selection of candidate genes resistance to NNV at the juvenile stage of Asian seabass.
