The purposes of this study were to (1) develop a typology of social engagement in older Korean immigrants in the United States and (2) compare the groups in the typology regarding their level of loneliness and self-rated health. Data were drawn from the Study of Older Korean Americans covering the five geographic locations (N = 2,149). Using eight criterion variables concerning the type and frequency of activities, latent profile analysis identified a six-group model as the most optimal with the following groups diverse, active, moderately social, structured, sedentary, and restricted. When the restricted group was used as the reference, the groups that were more socially engaged were found to have lower levels of loneliness. Additionally, being a member of the active or moderately social group was associated with more favorable self-ratings of health. These findings hold implications for understanding the variability of social engagement and how it relates to health and well-being.RNA- and DNA-binding domains are essential building blocks for specific regulation of gene expression. While a number of canonical nucleic acid binding domains share sequence and structural conservation, others are less obviously linked by evolutionary traits. In this review, we describe a protein fold of about 150 aa in length, bearing a conserved β-β-β-β-α-linker-β-β-β-β-α topology and similar nucleic acid binding properties but no apparent sequence conservation. The same overall fold can also be achieved by dimerization of two proteins, each bearing a β-β-β-β-α topology. These proteins include but are not limited to the transcription factors PC4 and P24 from humans and plants, respectively, the human RNA-transport factor Pur-α (also termed PURA), as well as the ssDNA-binding SP_0782 protein from Streptococcus pneumonia and the bacteriophage coat proteins PP7 and MS2. Besides their common overall topology, these proteins share common nucleic acids binding surfaces and thus functional similarity. We conclude that these PC4-like domains include proteins from all kingdoms of life and are much more abundant than previously known.Background Long-working hours (LWH) are a probable risk factor for ischemic heart diseases (IHD); however, no previous study has considered duration of exposure to LWH when addressing this topic. We aimed to determine the association between cumulative exposure to LWH and IHD while accounting for relevant confounders. Methods and Results In this retrospective study, we included all baseline participants from the French population-based cohort CONSTANCES. Part-time employees and those who reported a cardiac event in the 5 years before LWH exposure were excluded. From self-administered questionnaires and clinical examinations, we obtained participants' age, sex, body mass index, occupational status, smoking habits, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, familial history of cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia, exposure to LWH, and its duration. We defined LWH as working for >10 hours daily for at least 50 days per year. The main outcome was reported history of IHD, ie, myocardial infarction or angina pectoris, during a clinical examination. Of 137 854 included participants, 69 774 were men. There were 1875 cases (1.36%) of IHD, and exposure to LWH was reported by 42 462 subjects (30.8%) among whom 14 474 (10.50%) reported exposure for at least 10 years. Overall, exposure to LWH for ≥10 years was associated with an increased risk of IHD, adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.24 (1.08-1.43), P=0.0021. In stratified analyses, this effect was not observed in women, but was significant amongst men, aOR 1.28 (1.11-1.48), P=0.0008. Conclusions This large population-based study supports an association between cumulative exposure to LWH and IHD in men. Future research should consider relevant strategies for reducing LWH exposure and duration.Background Among US Hispanics/Latinos, the largest ethnic minority population in the United States, hypertension incidence has not been thoroughly reported. The goal of this study was to describe the incidence of hypertension among US Hispanic/Latino men and women of diverse Hispanic/Latino background. Methods and Results We studied 6171 participants of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, a diverse group of self-identified Hispanics/Latinos from 4 US urban communities, aged 18 to 74 years, and free from hypertension in 2008 to 2011 and re-examined in 2014 to 2017. Hypertension was defined as self-reported use of anti-hypertension medication, or measured systolic blood pressure ≥130 mm Hg, or diastolic blood pressure ≥80 mm Hg. Among men, the 6-year age-adjusted probability of developing hypertension was 21.7% (95% CI, 19.5-24.1) and differed by Hispanic/Latino background. Specifically, the probability was significantly higher among men of Cuban (27.1%; 95% CI, 20.2-35.2) and Dominican (28.1%; 95% CI, 19.5-38.8) backgrounds compared with Mexican Americans (17.6%; 95% CI 14.5-21.2). With a single patient producing a contact list of 98 in a healthcare setting, the implications in a community setting during a pandemic of the scale of COVID-19 are huge but it proves that early and rigorous tracing with quarantining is an effective strategy to limit clusters. We believe that if the public is encouraged to maintain their own contact list on a daily basis, it would help in significantly reducing the time and effort invested into contact tracing in the event of a person contracting COVID-19.
