The techniques of concrete crack detection, as well as assessments based on thermography coupled with ultrasound, have been presented in many works; however, they have generally needed an additional source of thermal infrared (TIR) radiance and have only been applied in laboratories. Considering the accessibility of thermal infrared cameras, a TIR camera (NEC F30W) was employed to detect cracking in the concrete wall of an historic house with a western architectural style in Kinmen, Taiwan, based on the TIR radiances of cracking. An operation procedure involving a series of image processing and statistical analysis processes was designed to evaluate the performance of the TIR camera in the assessment of the cracking width. This procedure using multiple measurements was implemented from March to August 2019, and the t-tests indicated that the temperature differences between the inside and outline of the concrete cracks remained insignificant as the temperature or relative humidity (RH) in the subtropical climate rose. The experimental results of the operation procedure indicated that the maximum focusing range, which is related to the size of the sensor array, and the minimum detectable crack width of a TIR camera should be 1.0 m and 6.0 mm, respectively, in order to derive a linear regression model with a determination coefficient R2 of 0.733 to estimate the cracking widths, based on the temperature gradients. The validation results showed that there was an approximate R2 value of 0.8 and a total root mean square error of ±2.5 mm between the cracking width estimations and the observations.Platelet-associated complications including thrombosis, thrombocytopenia, and haemorrhage are commonly observed during various inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis. Although several mechanisms that may contribute to the dysfunction of platelets during inflammatory diseases have been reported, knowledge on the primary molecules/mechanisms that underpin platelet-associated complications in such conditions is not fully established. Here, we report the significance of the mouse antimicrobial cathelicidin, mouse cathelicidin-related antimicrobial peptide (mCRAMP) (an orthologue of LL37 in humans), on the modulation of platelet reactivity during psoriasis using Imiquimod-induced psoriasis in mice as an inflammatory disease model for psoriasis vulgaris in humans. The activation of platelets during psoriasis is increased as evidenced by the elevated levels of fibrinogen binding and P-selectin exposure on the surface of platelets, and the level of soluble P-selectin in the plasma of psoriatic mice. The skin and plasma of psoriatic mice displayed increased levels of mCRAMP. Moreover, the plasma of psoriatic mice augmented the activation of platelets obtained from healthy mice. The effect of mCRAMP is partially mediated through formyl peptide receptor 2/3 (Fpr2/3, the orthologue to human FPR2/ALX) in platelets as a significant reduction in their activation was observed when FPR2/ALX-selective inhibitors such as WRW4 or Fpr2/3-deficient mouse platelets were used in these assays. This study aimed to contribute to the depth of knowledge of the diversity of bacterial species found in Sparus aurata collected from a fish farm and to understand which profiles of diminished susceptibility to antibiotics would be found in these bacteria that might be disseminated in the environment. One hundred thirty-six bacterial strains were recovered from the S. aurata samples. These strains belonged to Bacillaceae, Bacillales Family XII. Incertae Sedis, Comamonadaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, Enterococcaceae, Erwiniaceae, Micrococcaceae, Pseudomonadaceae and Staphylococcaceae families. Its activity raised queries regarding its ability to, not only act as a bio-fungicide or bio-bactericide, but also systemically inducing resistance in plants. This was examined by TTO application to banana plants challenged by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc, Race 1) causing Fusarium wilt and to tomato plants challenged by Xanthomonas campestris. Parameters to assess resistance induction included disease development, enzymatic activity, defense genes expression correlated to systemic acquired resistance (SAR) and induced systemic resistance (ISR) and priming effect. Spraying TTO on field-grown banana plants infected with Foc and greenhouse tomato plants infected with Xanthomonas campestris led to resistance induction in both hosts. Several marker genes of salicylic acid, jasmonic acid and ethylene pathways were significantly up-regulated in parallel with symptoms reduction. For tomato plants, we have also recorded a priming effect following TTO treatment. However, the clinical relevance of H2AX in ovarian cancer (OC) remains to be elucidated. Methods OC H2AX expression studied using the TCGA/GTEX datasets. Subsequently, patients were classified as either high or low in terms of H2AX expression to compare OS and perform gene set enrichment. qRT-PCR validated in-silico H2AX findings followed by immunohistochemistry on a tissue microarray. The association between single nucleotide polymorphisms in the area of H2AX; prevalence and five-year OC survival was tested in samples from the UK Biobank. Results H2AX was significantly overexpressed in OCs compared to normal tissues, with higher expression associated with better OS (p = 0.010). Gene Set Enrichment Analysis demonstrated gene sets involved in G2/M checkpoint, DNA repair mTORC1 signalling were enriched in the H2AX highly expressing OCs. Polymorphisms in the area around the gene were associated with both OC prevalence (rs72997349-C, p = 0.005) and worse OS (rs10790282-G, p = 0.011). Finally, we demonstrated that H2AX gene expression correlated with γ-H2AX staining in vitro. Conclusions Our findings suggest that H2AX can be a novel prognostic biomarker for OC.

Biliary strictures are frequently encountered in clinical practice. The determination of their nature is often difficult. This study aims to systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of the second generation of digital single-operator cholangioscopy (SpyGlass DS, DSOC) in indeterminate biliary strictures (IBDS) through biopsies.

All relative studies published in Medline, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and EMBASE were included. The diagnostic tests for IBDS were compared to the surgical histology, autopsy, or long-term clinical follow-up. The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated by the Quality Assessment of Studies of Diagnostic Accuracy Included in Systematic Reviews (QUADAS-2).

A total of 11 studies, which involved 356 patients diagnosed through biopsies, were included. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio and diagnostic odds ratio were 0.74 (95% CI 0.67-0.80), 0.98 (95% CI 0.95-1.00), 10.52 (95% CI 5.45-20.32), 0.31 (95% CI 0.23-0.41), and 65.18 (95% CI 26.79-158.61), respectively. The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.9479, and the pooled adverse event rate was 7%. The sensitivity and specificity in the heterogeneity analysis were

They include three different groups classified by the nature of the transcription factors required for their development and by the cytokines they produce. ILCs mainly reside in tissues close to the mucosal barrier such as the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Due to their close proximity to the mucosal surface, ILCs are exposed to a variety of both commensal and pathogenic bacteria. Under non-pathological conditions, ILCs have been shown to be important regulators for the maintenance of tissue homeostasis by mutual interactions with the microbiome. Besides these important functions at homeostasis, several studies have also provided emerging evidence that ILCs contribute to defense against pathogenic bacterial infection by responding rapidly to the pathogens as well as orchestrating other immune cells. In this review, we summarize recent advances in our understanding of the interactions of ILCs and bacteria, with special focus on the function of the different ILC subsets in bacterial infections.Streptococcus suis is a zoonotic pathogen causing serious infections in swine and humans. Although metals are essential for life, excess amounts of metals are toxic to bacteria. Transcriptome-level data of the mechanisms for resistance to metal toxicity in S. suis are available for no metals other than zinc. Herein, we explored the transcriptome-level changes in S. suis in response to ferrous iron and cobalt toxicity by RNA sequencing. Many genes were differentially expressed in the presence of excess ferrous iron and cobalt. Most genes in response to cobalt toxicity showed the same expression trends as those in response to ferrous iron toxicity. qRT-PCR analysis of the selected genes confirmed the accuracy of RNA sequencing results. Bioinformatic analysis of the differentially expressed genes indicated that ferrous iron and cobalt have similar effects on the cellular processes of S. suis. Ferrous iron treatment resulted in down-regulation of several oxidative stress tolerance-related genes and up-regulation of the genes in an amino acid ABC transporter operon.
