05). FSH upregulated genes involved in energy metabolism and MAPK signaling and downregulated genes related to phagosome and allograft rejection in the ovarian cortex. Preantral follicles cultured in situ with FSH had greater expression of total p42/44 MAPK (P less then 0.05), but no difference was detected in whole tissue Western blot for phosphorylated p42/44 MAPK or aromatase. We conclude that the FSHR is expressed in preantral follicles as early as the primary stage of development, and that FSH upregulates cell metabolism and activates MAPK signaling pathways in preantral follicles.
Student mental health in higher education has been an increasing concern. The COVID-19 pandemic situation has brought this vulnerable population into renewed focus.
Our study aims to conduct a timely assessment of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of college students.
We conducted interview surveys with 195 students at a large public university in the United States to understand the effects of the pandemic on their mental health and well-being. The data were analyzed through quantitative and qualitative methods.
Of the 195 students, 138 (71%) indicated increased stress and anxiety due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Multiple stressors were identified that contributed to the increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depressive thoughts among students. These included fear and worry about their own health and of their loved ones (177/195, 91% reported negative impacts of the pandemic), difficulty in concentrating (173/195, 89%), disruptions to sleeping patterns (168/195, 86%), decreased social interactions due to physical distancing (167/195, 86%), and increased concerns on academic performance (159/195, 82%). To cope with stress and anxiety, participants have sought support from others and helped themselves by adopting either negative or positive coping mechanisms.
Due to the long-lasting pandemic situation and onerous measures such as lockdown and stay-at-home orders, the COVID-19 pandemic brings negative impacts on higher education. The findings of our study highlight the urgent need to develop interventions and preventive strategies to address the mental health of college students.

Public health measures that were effective in previous infection outbreaks (eg, wearing a face mask, quarantining) were implemented in this outbreak. Available multidimensional social network data that take advantage of the recent rapid development of information and communication technologies allow for an exploration of disease spread and control via a modernized epidemiological approach. By using spatiotemporal data and real-time information, we can provide more accurate estimates of disease spread patterns related to human activities and enable more efficient responses to the outbreak. Two real cases during the COVID-19 outbreak demonstrated the application of emerging technologies and digital data in monitoring human movements related to disease spread. Although the ethical issues related to using digital epidemiology are still under debate, the cases reported in this article may enable the identification of more effective public health measures, as well as future applications of such digitally directed epidemiological approaches in controlling infectious disease outbreaks, which offer an alternative and modern outlook on addressing the long-standing challenges in population health.
Coagulopathy associated with COVID-19 infection and venous thromboembolism (VTE) have emerged as significant contributors to morbidity among patients infected with SARS-CoV-2.
We performed a systematic review to estimate VTE incidence in hospitalized patients and to analyze characteristic factors in the VTE cohort.
We searched PubMed and Google Scholar using specified title search terms "SARS-CoV-2" or "COVID-19" and "venous thromboembolism" and "anticoagulation" among others to identify peer-reviewed journal articles published between June 22, 2019, and June 22, 2020. Data were systematically extracted and synthesized using Microsoft Excel for analysis. The main outcome was VTE incidence, and measures included patient characteristics, anticoagulation, and clinical outcomes with assessment for associations.
In total, 14 studies were included comprising 1677 patients. LXS-196 Most patients (n=1306, 82.4%) received anticoagulation (either VTE prophylaxis or treatment). VTE incidence was 26.9% (SE 3.1; 95% CI 20.8-33.1) and was correlated with systematic screening (r
=0.34, P=.03) and study duration (r
=-0.33, P=.03). D-dimer was higher for the VTE cohort (5.62 [SD 0.9] vs 1.43 [SD 0.6]; P<.001). Odds of VTE were higher at the intensive care unit (odds ratio [OR] 6.38, 95% CI 3.67-11.11; P<.001) but lower with anticoagulation (OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.36-0.92; P=.02).
Despite the utilization of background anticoagulation, VTE incidence was historically high. link2 Future studies are needed to provide additional data to guide optimal VTE prophylaxis and diagnostic strategies.

Cognitive function and physical frailty are known to be closely related. Among older adults with dementia, those who wear dentures have a higher mortality rate than those who do not wear them. This suggests the possibility that oral health may affect the cognitive-frailty relationship. This study aims to investigate whether the number of teeth present, acts as a moderating variable in the cognitive function-frailty relationship.
Data were obtained from the cross-sectional baseline study of the Korean Frailty Aging Cohort Study (2016-2017). Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination. Frailty score was based on the Cardiovascular Health Study Index. Oral condition was evaluated by the number of teeth present and analyzed using categories of 0-9 teeth, 10-19 teeth, and ≥20. The moderation effect was analyzed using the ordinary least squares (OLS) regression.
Data on 2,310 older adults (1,110 men; mean age 75.9 ± 3.9 years) was analyzed. Adjusting for age, sex, income, education, alcohol drinking, body mass index, and number of comorbidities, cognitive function and frailty showed a negative association (B=-.030, p = .011). In the 10-19 teeth category, compared to the 0-9 teeth category, a negative association with frailty was found (B=-.152, p = .026). A significant interaction effect between the number of teeth and cognitive function was detected (p = .007).
The number of teeth may modify the degree of the association between cognitive function and frailty. For effective frailty management of older persons, cognitive function management and oral management should be considered and performed together.

Elderly multimorbid care home dwellers are a heterogenic group of frail individuals that exhibit sleep disturbances and a range of co-morbidities. The project aimed to study the possible effect of indoor circadian-adjusted LED-lighting (CaLED) in the elderly residents' care home on their sleeping patterns and systemic biomarkers associated with inflammation.
A 16-week trial study was performed to follow the intervention and control groups using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) to monitor sleep and daytime sleepiness, and biomarkers IL-6, TNF-α and suPAR, to estimate the levels of inflammation.
There was no significant impact on sleep improvement after the short intervention time when analyzing the PSQI and ESS results. However, we found several challenges using these tools for this specific group of individuals. Thus, important knowledge was gained for future studies in elderly care home dwellers. The inflammation state throughout the entire study period was stable for most of the elderly and no significant change was detected from before to after the intervention. This study represents a first-to-date attempt to ameliorate the adverse effects of sleep disturbances that characterize a randomly chosen group of elderly multimorbid subjects, by using circadian-adjusted LED-lighting in a natural care home environment.
In this pragmatic randomized study of home dwelling individuals we were not able to demonstrate an improved sleep pattern as judged by PSQI, ESS or a change in inflammatory state.

The aim of study was to identify the profile of selected mediators of potential clinical relevance in synovial fluid (SF) samples of dogs with elbow OA and analyse the range of motion (ROM) before and after cell-free MSCs-based treatment. In this study, conditioned medium from allogeneic canine adipose tissue - derived MSC (CM-AD-MSC) was prepared and administered into both elbow joints with OA in six Labrador retriever dogs (n = 6) on day 0 and 14 without creating a control group with a placebo. The SF of the elbow joints was analysed for the presence of several biomolecules (IL-6, IL-10, IL-8, IL-2, IL-12, TNF-αIFN-γ, MMP-3TIMP-1) before and after intraarticular applications of CM-AD-MSC. Kinematic analysis was used to assess the clinical effect of CM-AD-MSC. Analyses of SF and ROM were performed on days 0, 14 and 42. Concentration levels of MMP-3, TIMP-1, IL-6 and TNF-α in SF showed significant differences before and after the treatment (P less then .05). There was a significant improvement in ROM between day 0 and 42 (P less then .001). No severe adverse events were observed during the study. Results support the potential supportive effect of CM-AD-MSC as a noninvasive therapeutic tool for pain management of OA elbow joints in dogs.Cryptosporidiosis, caused by parasite species of the genus Cryptosporidium, is a major diarrhoeal disease in both people and animals globally, with C. hominis and C. parvum the main species infecting humans. Environmentally robust oocysts which are shed in high numbers in the faeces of infected individuals are resistant to disinfectants, including levels of chlorine normally used in drinking water. As a result, Cryptosporidium is a major cause of waterborne and foodborne outbreaks. Interestingly, C. hominis is responsible for the majority of waterborne outbreaks typed to date with C. parvum responsible for the majority of foodborne outbreaks. No vaccine and few treatments are currently available, which has greatly limited control of this disease to date. Livestock are both an important reservoir and source of human infections and improved husbandry and management practices as well as a One Health integrated molecular typing approach across both veterinary and public health systems are essential to improve our ability to control this disease.
