These results suggested that Bt maize is compatible with the NTAs and provides further evidence of the ecological impact of genetically modified maize.TCEs stands for technology-critical elements, a group of chemical elements for which imbalances between supply and demand exist or are deemed probable. This article challenges the scientific usefulness of such a classification when dealing with environmental and toxicological issues. Criticality is an economic conceptualization that is not well suited to guiding environmental chemistry research efforts. The classification is even counterproductive because it does not foster collaborative research with the countries directly touched by the environmental problems which are directly linked to the production of the elements. To explore an effective approach of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in wastewater with low C/N ratios, integrated packed bed bioreactors based on poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) with different dosing methods were designed. The removal efficiency of NH4+-N in bioreactor with aeration was 88.62%, and higher NO3--N removal efficiency was observed in bioreactor filled with grainy PHBV (95.21%) than bioreactor filled with strip PHBV (93.34%). selleck compound Microbial study indicated that microbes harboring amoA and nirS genes preferred to attach on the surface of ceramsite, and significant differences in microbial community compositions at phylum and genus levels were observed. To summarize, it is feasible to utilize grainy PHBV for simultaneous and efficient removal of NH4+-N and NO3--N from wastewater with low C/N ratios.A study was conducted to evaluate the suitability of groundwater in the drought-prone Shanmuganadhi River basin of south India for best agricultural practices since the surface water that exists in this basin is not sufficient to meet out the demand. As the quality of groundwater is not uniform in the hard rock aquifers of this basin, the work was carried out to demarcate the suitable groundwater quality zones for the agricultural activities. Sixty-one groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for various parameters such as electrical conductivity (EC), pH, TDS, major cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, and K+) and anions (Cl-, SO42-, HCO3-, PO43-, NO3-, and F-). To demarcate the feasible zones for agricultural practices, irrigation water quality parameters like EC, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), percent sodium (Na %), residual sodium carbonate (RSC), magnesium hazard ratio (MHR), Kelly's ratio (KR), and permeability index (PI) were computed. Furthermore, the irrigation water quality representation diagrams like ery high salinity with medium alkalinity" category (C4S2). Groundwater is suitable for irrigation in 277.52 km2 area of the basin. It is moderately suitable in an area of 318.46 km2 and poorly suitable over 38.64 km2. This study recommends that groundwater with moderate suitability could only be used for irrigating permeable soils and for cultivating salt-tolerant crops. The addition of gypsum to soil might be helpful to increase the infiltration capacity and osmotic activity. However, poorly suitable area should be avoided for agricultural practices. This study investigates the asymmetric dynamic effects of financial development on ecological footprint in Nigeria over the period 1971-2014 using the nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) framework. Ecological footprint in Nigeria is classified into carbon footprint, non-carbon footprint, and total ecological footprint. The results show that in Nigeria, a positive shock in financial development (an increase in financial development) has significant reducing effect on ecological footprint (i.e., improves environmental sustainability) while a negative shock in financial development (a decline in financial development) has significant increasing effect on ecological footprint (i.e., deteriorates environmental sustainability). Asymmetry test shows that a significant difference exists in how negative and positive shocks in financial development impact on carbon footprint and total ecological footprint, but not for non-carbon footprint. On the basis of the total ecological footprint, the adjustment asymmetry from the dynamic multiplier graph shows that the response of ecological footprint to a negative shock in financial development is stronger. Further findings from the analysis show that economic growth, energy consumption, urbanization, and economic globalization are all drivers of environmental sustainability in Nigeria. Overall, the results highlight the need for a deepened financial system, as part of the strategies for achieving sustainable development in Nigeria.Arsenic in fine air particulate matter (PM2.5) has been identified as an important factor responsible for the morbidity of lung cancer, which has increased sharply in many regions of China. Some reports in China have shown that arsenic in the air exceeds the ambient air quality standard value, while long-term airborne arsenic concentrations in central China and human exposure via inhalation of PM-bound arsenic (inhalable airborne PM) have not been well characterized. In this study, 579 outdoor air PM2.5 samples from Wuhan, a typical city in central China, were collected from 2015 to 2017, and arsenic was measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Personal exposure to PM-bound arsenic via inhalation and urinary arsenic concentration were also measured. The concentrations of arsenic in PM2.5 were in the range of 0.42-61.6 ng/m3 (mean 8.48 ng/m3). The average concentration of arsenic in 2015 (10.7 ng/m3) was higher than that in 2016 (6.81 ng/m3) and 2017 (8.18 ng/m3), exceeded the standard value. The arsenic concentrations in spring and winter were higher than those in summer and autumn. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were found among different sites. The daily intake of arsenic inhalation based on PM10 samples collected by personal samplers (median, 10.8 ng/m3) was estimated. Urban residents inhaled higher levels of PM-bound arsenic than rural residents. Daily intake of arsenic via inhalation accounted for a negligible part ( less then  1%) of the total daily intake of arsenic (calculated based on excreted urinary arsenic); however, potential associations between the adverse effects (e.g., lung adenocarcinoma) and inhaled PM-bound arsenic require more attention, particularly for those who experience in long-term exposure. This study is the first report of a 3-year temporal trend of airborne PM2.5-bound arsenic in central China.
