In addition, the intrinsic fluorescent properties of natural gels, known as clustering-triggered fluorescent gel, and new and recent relevant findings published in peer-reviewed journals are explained. This review also revealed the biomedical applications of AIE-based fluorescent hydrogels including drug delivery, biosensors, bioimaging, and tissue engineering. In conclusion, the current research situation and future directions are identified. Objectives Vascular endothelial growth factor plays an important role in the pathogenesis of malignant pleural effusion (MPE). We previously showed the efficacy of bevacizumab (Bev) plus carboplatin (CBDCA)/paclitaxel (PTX) in the treatment of non-small lung cell cancer (NSCLC) with MPE. However, the toxicities were a little severe, and the efficacy was not satisfied sufficiently. Therefore, we conducted a phase II study for NSCLC with MPE to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Bev plus CBDCA/nab-PTX, which is a new combination therapy. Methods Chemotherapy-naive non-squamous (SQ) NSCLC patients with MPE participated in the study. A single aspiration (not allowing chest tube drainage) was allowed before chemotherapy. Patients received a maximum of six cycles of Bev (15 mg/kg, day1) plus CBDCA (AUC 6, day1)/nab-PTX (100 mg/m2, day1, 8) every 3 weeks followed by Bev (15 mg/kg, day1) plus nab-PTX (100 mg/m2, day1, 8) every 3 weeks without disease progression or unacceptable severe toxicities. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR). Results The study enrollment was ceased because of suspension of the registration period (as scheduled) after 12 of 20 planned patients were treated successfully between March 2014 and February 2018. The ORR was 58.3 % (95 % CI, 27.7-84.8 %), and the disease control rate was 100 % (95 % CI, 73.5-100 %). Eight patients received maintenance therapy. Median progression-free and overall survival times were 14.4 and 26.9 months, respectively. Most patients experienced hematological toxicities, including ≥ grade 3 neutropenia and anemia; none experienced severe bleeding events and grade 5 toxicities. Conclusion The combination of Bev plus CBDCA/nab-PTX, a novel combination, might have efficacy with acceptable toxicities in chemotherapy-naïve non-SQ NSCLC patients with MPE.Trial Registration University Hospital Medical Information Network in Japan (UMIN) Clinical Trials Registry (No. UMIN000013329) registered on 4th March 2014.Measures of biological age and its components have been shown to provide important information about individual health and prospective change in health as there is clear value in being able to assess whether someone is experiencing accelerated or decelerated aging. Roc-A However, how to best assess biological age remains a question. We compare prediction of health outcomes using existing summary measures of biological age with a measure created by adding novel biomarkers related to aging to measures based on more conventional clinical chemistry and exam measures. We also compare the explanatory power of summary biological age measures compared to the individual biomarkers used to construct the measures. To accomplish this, we examine how well biological age, phenotypic age, and expanded biological age and five sets of individual biomarkers explain variability in four major health outcomes linked to aging in a large, nationally representative cohort of older Americans. We conclude that different summary measures of accelerated aging do better at explaining different health outcomes, and that chronological age has greater explanatory power for both cognitive dysfunction and mortality than the summary measures. In addition, we find that there is reduction in the variance explained in health outcomes when indicators are combined into summary measures, and that combining clinical indicators with more novel markers related to aging does best at explaining health outcomes. Finally, it is hard to define a set of assays that parsimoniously explains the greatest amount of variance across the range of health outcomes studied here. All of the individual markers considered were related to at least one of the health outcomes.

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a CD30-positive T-cell lymphoma, which is a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. ALCL rarely presents in the gastrointestinal tract, and the esophageal involvement in of ALCL is extremely rare.

An 11-year-old boy who complained of abdominal pain and cough was diagnosed with ALK-positive ALCL on the basis of systemic lymphadenopathy findings and immunohistochemistry results of pleural effusion. Although remission was observed after chemotherapy at 5months after diagnosis, dysphagia persisted, and esophagoscopy revealed a severe stricture in the middle thoracic esophagus. At 9months after diagnosis, allogeneic bone marrow transplantation was performed to ensure that complete remission was maintained; however, dysphagia and saliva retention did not improve. Approximately 10months after diagnosis, esophagoscopy revealed a blind end in the middle thoracic esophagus, similar to that in congenital esophageal atresia. Subsequently, we performed minimally invasive subtotal esntained, esophagectomy and esophageal reconstruction are useful treatment options for maintaining oral intake.

Despite its increasing use, pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy with oxaliplatin (PIPAC-OX) has never been prospectively investigated as a palliative monotherapy for colorectal peritoneal metastases in clinical trials. This trial aimed to assess the safety (primary aim) and antitumor activity (key secondary aim) of PIPAC-OX monotherapy in patients with unresectable colorectal peritoneal metastases.

In this two-center, single-arm, phase II trial, patients with isolated unresectable colorectal peritoneal metastases in any line of palliative treatment underwent 6-weekly PIPAC-OX (92mg/m

). Key outcomes were major treatment-related adverse events (primary outcome), minor treatment-related adverse events, hospital stay, tumor response (radiological, biochemical, pathological, ascites), progression-free survival, and overall survival.

Twenty enrolled patients underwent 59 (median 3, range 1-6) PIPAC-OX procedures. Major treatment-related adverse events occurred in 3 of 20 (15%) patients after 5 of 59 (8%) procedures (abdominal pain, intraperitoneal hemorrhage, iatrogenic pneumothorax, transient liver toxicity), including one possibly treatment-related death (sepsis of unknown origin).
