Nerves were consistently localized within the outer layers of the annulus fibrosus. Neural ingrowth into the inner annulus fibrosus and nucleus pulposus was found to occur only in degenerative and disease states.

While the pattern of innervation within the IVD is clear, the specific topographic arrangement and function of neural elements in the context of back pain remains unclear.

However, categorical constructs and their labels can be somewhat arbitrary. Derived from exhaustive vocabularies of place names (e.g., Deng et al., 2009), or the judgements of small groups of researchers (e.g., Fei-Fei, Iyer, Koch, & Perona, 2007), these categories may not correspond with human-preferred taxonomies. Here, we propose clustering by increasing the rand index via coordinate ascent (CIRCA) an unsupervised, data-driven clustering method for deriving ground-truth scene categories. In Experiment 1, human participants organized 80 stereoscopic images of outdoor scenes from the Southampton-York Natural Scenes (SYNS) dataset (Adams et al., 2016) into discrete categories. In separate tasks, images were grouped according to i) semantic content, ii) three-dimensional spatial structure, or iii) two-dimensional image appearance. Participants provided text labels for each group. Using the CIRCA method, we determined the most representative category structure and then derived category labels for each task/dimension. In Experiment 2, we found that these categories generalized well to a larger set of SYNS images, and new observers. In Experiment 3, we tested the relationship between our category systems and the spatial envelope model (Oliva & Torralba, 2001). Finally, in Experiment 4, we validated CIRCA on a larger, independent dataset of same-different category judgements. The derived category systems outperformed the SUN taxonomy (Xiao, Hays, Ehinger, Oliva, & Torralba, 2010) and an alternative clustering method (Greene, 2019). In summary, we believe this novel categorization method can be applied to a wide range of datasets to derive optimal categorical groupings and labels from psychophysical judgements of stimulus similarity.Bison are an icon of the American West and an ecologically, commercially, and culturally important species. Despite numbering in the hundreds of thousands today, conservation concerns remain for the species, including the impact on genetic diversity of a severe bottleneck around the turn of the 20th century and genetic introgression from domestic cattle. CCT245737 cell line Genetic diversity and admixture are best evaluated at genome-wide scale, for which a high-quality reference is necessary. Here, we use trio binning of long reads from a bison-Simmental cattle (Bos taurus taurus) male F1 hybrid to sequence and assemble the genome of the American plains bison (Bison bison bison). The male haplotype genome is chromosome-scale, with a total length of 2.65 Gb across 775 scaffolds (839 contigs) and a scaffold N50 of 87.8 Mb. Our bison genome is ~13× more contiguous overall and ~3400× more contiguous at the contig level than the current bison reference genome. The bison genome sequence presented here (ARS-UCSC_bison1.0) will enable new research into the evolutionary history of this iconic megafauna species and provide a new tool for the management of bison populations in federal and commercial herds.Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global societal challenge requiring the contribution of professionals along with general community citizens for their containment. Portugal is one of the European countries where a lack of knowledge on the correct use of antimicrobials and AMR problematic is preeminent. Moreover, youth demotivation to pursue science careers is emerging. To address these problems an innovative experimental service-learning pedagogical strategy, MicroMundo@UPorto, was implemented in Portugal during 2018 through University of Porto as a partner of the global Citizen Science project 'Tiny Earth' responding to the AMR crisis. In this first edition of MicroMundo@UPorto, university students (n = 41; Pharmaceutical Sciences and Nutrition Sciences) organized in eight teams tutored by university professors/researchers (n = 13) on Microbiology and AMR theoretical and practical aspects as well on communication skills to enable their guidance of younger school students (n = 140/3 schools) in experiments to discover antimicrobial-producing microorganisms while exploring the soil microbial diversity. Post-survey-based evaluation revealed that this project allowed university students to acquire diverse personal, social and scientific skills while increasing AMR awareness, in the One-Health perspective, and interest for science in school students. This University to Society approach can be successfully extended across Portugal and for education in Microbiology in general, with benefits for the future generations contributing to socially responsible and scientifically-literate citizens.

To describe differences between patients with chronic, non-cancer pain (CNCP) who were successfully able to cease full mu agonist chronic opioid analgesic therapy (COAT), and those who exhibited refractory COAT reliance, among those who participated in a multidisciplinary program designed for COAT cessation.

A retrospective review of electronic medical records (EMR) data was organized for preliminary analysis.

A multicenter private practice specializing in CNCP, which received patient referrals from the surrounding geographical area of primary and specialty care offices in Northern California.

Data from 109 patients with CNCP who participated in a multidisciplinary program to cease COAT between the dates of October 2017 to December 2019 were examined.

EMR data, pre-COAT cessation, of oral morphine milligram equivalence (MME) and validated questionnaire responses assessing anxiety and fear-based beliefs and behavior, as well as opioid misuse, were extracted and compared between those who successfully ceased COAT and those who did not.
