Empathy remains a widely discussed topic within medical education research. Studies on empathy changes among medical students are not univocal empathy may decline, remain stable or increase. A largely unexplored research question regards inter-individual variability in empathy change, namely if different longitudinal trajectories of empathy exist. Evidence on the association of empathy trajectories with personality and motives for studying medicine is also scarce. Here, latent growth modeling examined empathy (measured with the Jefferson Scale of Empathy) among 201 medical students (Mage = 20.74, 57% females) across three assessments at entry year (Year 1) and during the first two clinical years (Years 4 and 5). Associations between empathy trajectories, personality in Year 1 and motives for studying medicine in Years 4 and 5 were tested. We identified two empathy trajectory groups lower and decreasing (n = 59; 29%) and higher and stable (n = 142; 71%). Regression analyses indicated that higher openness in Year 1 was associated with an increased probability of higher and stable group membership (controlling for motives in Year 1). The effect of openness disappeared controlling for motives in Years 4 and 5 while caring for patients (in Years 4 and 5) and altruism (in Year 4) were positively associated with an increased probability of higher and stable group membership. In sum, we observed that empathy remains stable in most medical students and declines in fewer; openness and patients-oriented motives for studying medicine are associated with higher and stable empathy. Encouraging medical students' patients-oriented motives from preclinical throughout clinical years may prevent empathy decline.This study aimed to enhance the crystallizability of bio-based succinic acid for its efficient recovery while maintaining the end product at the highest purity. Immobilization of Actinobacillus succinogenes was initially evaluated based on three different carriers volcanic glass, clay pebbles, and silica particles. The adsorption capacity of metabolites with a low concentration (10 g/L) and a high concentration (40 g/L) was investigated. It was demonstrated that clay pebbles adsorbed the least succinic acid ( less then  11 mg/g clay pebbles). The repeated batch-fermentation trials with immobilized cells highlighted that succinic acid with an average concentration of up to 36.3 g/L with a metabolite-production ratio of 31 (succinic acid to by-products) could be attained within 130 h. Subsequently, the purification of succinic acid through crystallization was assessed in terms of pH, temperature, crystallization time, initial succinic acid concentration and multiple recrystallization processes. Increasing the crystallization time from 6 h to 9 h afforded an improvement of 17% in the recovery of succinic acid crystals. Moreover, a fourfold concentration coefficient of the broth yielded the highest purity percentage (99.9%). The crystallization in three consecutive stages at 9 h (with a fourfold concentration coefficient) successfully improved the total recovery percentage of succinic acid from 55.0 to 84.8%.This paper details the first breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) case detected in Japan. The patient, a 67-year-old Japanese woman, was diagnosed with left unilateral breast cancer 17 years ago. Induration and redness presented in the left breast, which had undergone immediate breast reconstructive surgery using a tissue expander, later replaced by a silicone breast implant (SBI). Breast ultrasound showed fluid collection around the SBI. Surgery was performed to remove the left breast implant and the fragmented capsule surrounding the implant. Postoperative pathological findings did not indicate malignancy. Nine months later, a contralateral axillary lymphadenopathy was observed, and an excisional biopsy of the axillary lymph node was performed. The patient was diagnosed with BIA-ALCL and successfully underwent adjuvant CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone) chemotherapy.INTRODUCTION Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are ubiquitous lipids produced as a result of bacterial fermentation of dietary fiber. While their role in colorectal cancer is well known, the effect of SCFAs in breast cancer is poorly defined. OBJECTIVE To understand the various effects of SCFAs on breast carcinogenesis, we investigated the effect of sodium butyrate (NaB) and sodium propionate (NaP) in MCF-7 cell line. Cell cycle was performed using propidium iodide staining then analyzed with a flow cytometer. Apoptosis was assessed by Hoechst technique and cell-cycle sub-G1 phase. RESULTS NaB and NaP inhibited MCF-7 cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner with respective IC50 of 1.26 mM and 4.5 mM, thus indicating that NaB is more potent than NaP. Low and medium levels of both SCFAs induced morphology changes which are characteristic of a differentiated phenotype. Flow cytometry analysis revealed a blockage in G1 growth phase. Interestingly, removing NaB or NaP from culture media after few days of treatment showed a reversible effect on cell morphology and proliferation where cells reentered the cycle after 24 h of drug wash-out. Finally, treatment with medium levels of these molecules induced low MCF-7 apoptosis, while higher doses led to massive apoptosis. CONCLUSION Our results show that SCFAs may be considered as an interesting inhibitor for breast cancer progression.The fan mussel, Pinna nobilis is a highly endangered bivalve species endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. During the last few decades, populations have been greatly reduced due to anthropic impacts and they are now under strict protection in most Mediterranean countries. Today, the species is facing a major crisis following the introduction of an haplosporidan parasite which is driving mass mortality in almost all P. nobilis populations throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Gathering additional knowledge regarding dynamics and connectivity patterns of P. nobilis populations is now more than ever critical. Here, we describe the development of 26 highly polymorphic microsatellite markers. Average allelic diversity of 10.9 alleles per locus was reported and heterozygosity ranged from 0.0294 to 0.9737. We tested cross-species amplification in four Pinna species for the new markers together with 10 already published markers, and analysed its success according to the genetic distances among species. Cross-species transferability success ranged from 3 to 38% and had a negative relationship with the genetic distance between the target species and the tested species. The establishment of this new set of high-resolution markers provides a useful tool to understand processes driving gene flow and genetic diversity in P. nobilis populations and the closest congeneric species.Two new cytotoxic 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives have been synthesized and characterized. Their biological activities as cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activities and inhibitory activities against DNA-polymerase were evaluated. Through its antioxidative effects, uric acid can reduce cell injury. However, its mechanism is unknown. This study investigated the protective mechanism of uric acid in cells during ischemia-reperfusion. We divided hippocampal neurons into six groups the control, OGD, OGD/R, OGD/R + HMGB1 siRNA, OGD/R + uric acid, and OGD/R + uric acid + HMGB1 groups. The MTT assay was used to evaluate cell viability, while apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. The expression of HMGB1, TLR4, NF-κB-p65 and phosphorylated NF-κB-p65 was detected by Western blotting. The levels of IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α in the culture medium were determined by ELISA. The results indicated increased cell viability and decreased apoptosis in the presence of HMGB1 siRNA and uric acid but the opposite findings in the presence of HMGB1 protein after OGD/R. Uric acid and HMGB1 siRNA inhibited HMGB1 acetylation to prevent its transport from the nucleus to the cytoplasm. The expression of HMGB1 downstream proteins (TLR4, NF-κB-p65 and phosphorylated NF-κB-p65) and the levels of inflammatory factors in the presence of HMGB1 siRNA and uric acid was lower than those in the presence of HMGB1 protein after OGD or OGD/R. These data indicated that uric acid may prevent cell injury mainly by inhibiting HMGB1 acetylation to regulate TLR4/NF-κB pathways and reduce the levels of inflammatory factors.Intracerebroventricular streptozotocin injection (icv STZ) is a well established sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) model in rodents. AD is characterized by neuronal degeneration accompanied by central oxidative stress. Studies also indicate peripheral oxidative damage in AD, but if the icv STZ model of sporadic AD mimics this feature is an open question. This study aimed to investigate if icv STZ administration induces peripheral oxidative stress and the antioxidant action of Ebselen, compared to the reference drug (donepezil), in this sporadic AD model. Male adult Swiss mice received icv STZ (days 1 and 3). Mice received Ebselen (10 mg/kg, i.p) or Donepezil (5 mg/kg, i.p) for 14 days. Mice were killed and the kidney and liver were excised to determine parameters of oxidative stress and toxicity markers. The mice icv STZ-injected showed peripheral oxidative stress. Ebselen reversed renal lipid peroxidation in the icv STZ administered mice by modulating NPSH levels, SOD and CAT activities, whereas Donepezil, modulated only NPSH levels. Ebselen and Donepezil counteracted hepatic lipid peroxidation in STZ-injected mice by modulating NPSH levels and CAT activity. The δ-ALA-D activity was inhibited in the kidney, but not in the liver, whereas the icv STZ-injected mice had an increase in the GST activity in both tissues. Ebselen reversed the increase in the hepatic GST activity of the STZ-injected mice. Donepezil increased renal GST activity in the control mice. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the icv STZ administration induced peripheral oxidative stress. Ebselen, similar to Donepezil, was effective against peripheral oxidative stress in a mouse model of sporadic AD.
